Sweden buys 10 HIMARS rocket launchers from US in $729 million deal to create first long-range strike unit.


Sweden signed a contract worth over SEK 7 billion ($729 million) on September 7, 2026, to purchase more than ten M142 HIMARS launchers and a comprehensive GMLRS ammunition package from Lockheed Martin, with initial deliveries starting in 2027. The strategic acquisition establishes the Swedish Army's first operational rocket artillery capability, addressing a critical long-range gap within its new division under the Total Defence Bill 2025-2030. While existing Archer 155 mm howitzers cover short-range requirements, HIMARS enables deep-strike targeting against high-value assets across 90 km to 500 km range tiers.

Sweden's finalized order covers slightly over ten M142 launchers and 840 GMLRS/ER-GMLRS precision rockets, alongside 20 M57 ATACMS tactical ballistic missile pods. Bilateral support agreements with Finland leverage established M270 MLRS maintenance and training infrastructure to accelerate initial operational integration.

On September 7, 2026, Sweden announced the purchase of slightly more than ten M142 HIMARS rocket launchers and a large GMLRS ammunition package for more than SEK 7 billion, with deliveries beginning in 2027, creating the Army's first operational rocket artillery force. The decision follows the March 10 U.S. Foreign Military Sale (FMS) of a $930 million package comprising 20 M142s, 140 GMLRS and ER-GMLRS pods, 20 M57 ATACMS pods and 24 IFATDS fire control systems. The first Swedish HIMARS unit will be assigned to the new Army division being established under Defence Decision 2024 and the Total Defence Bill 2025-2030.

At the divisional level, this means that Sweden's existing Archer 155 mm self-propelled howitzers remain optimized for fires within roughly 50 to 60 km, whereas the HIMARS permits farther precision strike bands at roughly 90 km with GMLRS rockets, 150 km with the ER-GMLRS, 300 km with the ATACMS, and eventually close to 500 km with the PrSM against artillery, air defense positions, command posts, and logistics facilities located beyond the Archer's range. The requirement predates Russia's February 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In its 2021 budget submission, the Swedish Armed Forces had already identified rocket artillery as a capability to be considered for the future divisional artillery battalion and assessed that an existing system could be acquired rather than developed domestically, as was attempted after the Second World War with the 10.5 cm Salvkanon m/46.

By July 2026, four personnel from Artilleriets Stridsskola spent two weeks with the South Dakota National Guard's 1st Battalion, 147th Field Artillery Regiment studying HIMARS and M270 organization, certification, training and firing procedures, including a battalion exercise in which more than 100 rockets were fired in one day. Defence Minister Pål Jonson subsequently identified command posts, air defense, logistics and artillery as Swedish HIMARS targets, while Army Chief Maj. Gen. Johan Pekkari emphasized that the Army currently lacks the long-range precision-strike capability already available through the Swedish Air Force. Assigning the HIMARS to the division therefore gives ground commanders their own means of attacking selected targets deep behind opposing forward formations. 

The March authorization defines the upper boundary of the ammunition structure Sweden considered: 35 M31A2 GMLRS Unitary, 35 M30A2 GMLRS Alternative Warhead, 35 M403 ER-GMLRS AW and 35 M404 ER-GMLRS Unitary pods, plus 20 M57 ATACMS pods. At six rockets per GMLRS pod, this equals 210 rounds of each variant and 840 rockets overall, evenly divided between 420 standard-range and 420 extended-range weapons, plus 20 ATACMS. A HIMARS carries one interchangeable rocket pod containing six GMLRS or ER-GMLRS, one ATACMS, or two PrSM missiles. Once its six rockets have been fired, an M142 requires another loaded pod before conducting another full firing cycle. Swedish combat capacity will consequently depend on ammunition transport, dispersed stocks, reload points, and the number of loaded pods available behind the firing units, not simply launcher serviceability.

Even 10 or 11 fully operational HIMARS cannot repeat a 66-round firing cycle unless another 11 six-round pods are available for immediate reloading. The ammunition mix also determines target effect. The M31A2 provides a 90 km precision weapon with a 200 lb (91 kg) unitary warhead, while the M30A2 uses an Alternative Warhead with pre-formed fragments against personnel and distributed materiel. The M403 ER-GMLRS AW extends the fragmentation option toward 150 km, and the M404 ER-GMLRS Unitary provides a point-target weapon at similar range. The contemplated 840-round package was therefore evenly divided between 420 unitary and 420 Alternative Warhead rockets, as well as between 420 standard-range and 420 extended-range rounds. Additionally, the M57 ATACMS adds a 300 km layer at one missile per launcher, while the PrSM could eventually provide two missiles per M142 at ranges approaching 500 km.

This gives the Swedish division distinct combinations of range and effect for artillery, air defense, headquarters, and logistics targets rather than one generic HIMARS ammunition type. Historically, this is also a larger change than another Swedish artillery modernization. Sweden operated 26 Bandkanon 1 self-propelled 155 mm guns between 1967 and 2003; the system could fire 14 shells in 45 seconds but reached only roughly 25 km and remained conventional tube artillery. Sweden examined rocket artillery through Swedish-American technology exchanges in 1977 and Artillerisystem 2000 studies by 1982, and later investigated foreign systems without establishing an operational MLRS unit. Its artillery development instead continued through the FH 77 and the Archer.

Finland further reduces the infrastructure Sweden must create for an initial force of slightly more than ten launchers. Finland operates roughly 40 M270 MLRS systems and already possesses MLRS training, ammunition-handling and maintenance experience; unlike the single-pod M142, each M270 carries two pods. Forty M270s could therefore theoretically carry 480 ready GMLRS rockets, compared with 66 aboard 11 Swedish HIMARS, which shows the scale of experience available to Sweden in ammunition handling and unit organization, although actual operational loads will vary.

The September 7 agreement between Jonson and Finnish Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen consequently covers training, education, capability development, maintenance, production and security of supply, while M270 and HIMARS share ammunition and components. Sweden can also use Finnish maintenance and repair capacity while Lockheed Martin establishes a European HIMARS maintenance capability at Tampere. This allows Stockholm to concentrate early resources on crews, fire direction, ammunition handling and integration into the new division rather than duplicating every support function for an initial 10 or 11 launcher fleet.
