South Korea Upgrades K2 Black Panther Tanks With Active Protection Against Drone Threats.
South Korea will upgrade its K2 Black Panther tanks with active protection, electronic jammers, and remote weapons to counter North Korean drones and anti-tank missiles. The $2.4 billion program will reshape K2 protection around threats increasingly defining armored warfare in Ukraine and on the Korean Peninsula.
Announced on August 13, 2026, the modernization is expected to begin in 2028, with the first upgraded K2 tanks entering South Korean Army service from 2033. Around 3.4 trillion won ($2.4 billion) will support a layered protection package combining active interception, electronic warfare and remotely operated weapons against FPV drones, loitering munitions and precision anti-tank threats.

At the core of the modernization is the integration of an active protection system, or APS, designed to detect and neutralize incoming anti-tank guided missiles while also contributing to defense against certain unmanned aerial threats. Hard-kill APS architectures generally combine sensors distributed around the vehicle with launchers that fire countermeasures toward an incoming projectile before impact. The K2 already uses a layered protection arrangement combining composite armor and reactive elements, while Hyundai Rotem offers configurations compatible with soft-kill or hard-kill protection systems. The planned upgrade is therefore intended to move the tank toward a broader defensive architecture capable of engaging certain threats before they reach its passive armor.
According to South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration, the program will also integrate electronic jammers and remote weapon stations to expand protection against anti-tank missiles and drones. Jammers can disrupt radio-frequency links used by certain remotely controlled UAVs, particularly FPV systems whose operators depend on continuous command and video transmission. These systems do not provide universal protection, especially against autonomous platforms or drones using more resilient data links. They can, however, interfere with terminal guidance and reduce the effectiveness of relatively low-cost attack platforms. A remote weapon station adds another defensive layer by allowing the crew to engage exposed personnel or low-flying aerial targets while remaining under armor.
The upgrade builds on a relatively recent armored platform. Hyundai Rotem states that the K2 has a combat weight of around 56 tonnes and is powered by a 1,500 hp diesel engine, giving it a power-to-weight ratio of about 27.3 hp per tonne. Its maximum road speed reaches 70 km/h, with a range of approximately 450 km. The main armament consists of a 120 mm 55-caliber smoothbore gun fed by an automatic loader, allowing the tank to operate with a three-person crew rather than the four normally required on manually loaded designs. The vehicle can carry 40 rounds of 120 mm ammunition.
Its fire-control architecture includes stabilized commander and gunner sights with day and thermal channels, laser rangefinders and automatic target tracking. The commander can use a hunter-killer engagement sequence in which one crew member searches for the next target while another continues the current engagement. The tank is also linked to a battlefield management system compatible with a C4I architecture, enabling tactical data exchange between vehicles and command echelons. These features are becoming more relevant as armored-unit protection increasingly depends not only on the platform itself but also on the integration of detection, electronic warfare and interception systems.
At the tactical level, the modernization is primarily intended to improve K2 survivability against FPV drones, loitering munitions and top-attack anti-tank missiles. The APS is expected to intercept certain threats before impact, while jammers can disrupt drone control links. Remote weapon stations also provide an additional means of engaging nearby threats without exposing the crew.
The South Korean decision also reflects developments north of the Demilitarized Zone. Kim Jong Un has regularly overseen drone-related activities since 2024 and has called for the mass production of suicide attack drones, while North Korea continues to expose some of its personnel to operational lessons associated with the war in Ukraine. The new North Korean Chonma-20 tank has also been presented with an active protection system, suggesting that both militaries on the peninsula increasingly regard active defenses as a central element of armored survivability.
Beyond South Korea, the modernization shows the direct influence of the war in Ukraine on the evolution of main battle tanks. Priority is increasingly being placed on integrating counter-drone systems, electronic warfare capabilities, and active protection around the vehicle. This approach could also shape future K2 developments among foreign operators, particularly Poland, as armored protection becomes a central issue for modern land forces.
