MBDA Unveils Mobile Counter-Drone Air Defense System with CMI and ASRAAM Missiles.


MBDA unveils a new mobile short-range air defense concept that combines its Counter Mass Interceptor (CMI) with the surface-launched ASRAAM (Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile), offering armed forces a layered response to the growing threat posed by drones, helicopters and cruise missiles. Revealed during the Farnborough International Airshow 2026, the system addresses a critical battlefield challenge by using lower-cost interceptors against inexpensive aerial threats while preserving high-end missiles for more demanding targets.

Mounted on a high-mobility Supacat tactical vehicle, the configuration enables rapid deployment and combines two complementary interceptors to engage a wide spectrum of airborne threats. The concept reflects a broader shift toward layered air defense architectures designed to counter mass drone attacks, improve magazine depth, and enhance force survivability in increasingly contested operational environments.

Unlike conventional short-range air defense missiles primarily developed to defeat combat aircraft, the Counter Mass Interceptor has been designed specifically to engage Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3 UAVs. According to MBDA, the missile can also intercept helicopters and cruise missiles, positioning it as the lower tier of a layered air defense architecture alongside the longer-range surface-launched ASRAAM.

According to MBDA, CMI uses an infrared seeker to conduct autonomous fire-and-forget engagements after launch. The missile can be cued by radar or electro-optical sensors, potentially reducing operator workload and allowing the fire-control system to address subsequent threats. However, the number and speed of consecutive engagements will also depend on sensor coverage, command-and-control performance and the launcher's ready-to-fire missile inventory.

MBDA states that CMI can engage targets at ranges and altitudes exceeding 6 km, with day-and-night operation and 360-degree coverage. The 53 kg interceptor measures 2.3 meters in length and uses a 122 mm solid-propellant rocket motor, an infrared seeker, canard flight controls and a blast-fragmentation warhead. Radar or electro-optical sensors can cue the missile before launch, while a passive configuration is also available for operations requiring a reduced electromagnetic signature.

A notable feature of the new configuration is the combination of CMI with surface-launched ASRAAM. While ASRAAM provides the capability to engage higher-performance aerial threats, including combat aircraft and fast-moving cruise missiles, CMI is intended to address the growing challenge posed by large numbers of smaller UAVs. Together, the two missiles create a layered engagement capability that allows commanders to select the most appropriate interceptor according to the nature of the threat.

The launcher displayed at Farnborough was integrated onto a Supacat high-mobility tactical vehicle, underscoring MBDA's focus on expeditionary and maneuver operations. The lightweight vehicle can accompany advancing ground forces, rapidly relocate after missile launches and reduce exposure to enemy targeting and retaliatory strikes. Such mobility has become increasingly important as air defense units themselves are routinely targeted by long-range precision weapons and loitering munitions.

Beyond the demonstrated vehicle configuration, MBDA describes CMI as a platform-agnostic weapon. The missile can be integrated onto tactical land vehicles, installed aboard uncrewed surface vessels or packaged within containerized launch systems to increase available missile inventories for fixed-site or expeditionary air defense. This modular approach offers flexibility for integration into different national force structures and operational concepts.

The interceptor also expands MBDA's Sky Warden counter-uncrewed aerial system architecture, which integrates surveillance sensors, command-and-control software, electronic warfare capabilities and kinetic effectors into a layered air defense network. The architecture is intended to combine soft-kill and hard-kill responses, allowing operators to tailor engagements according to the characteristics of incoming threats. MBDA indicated that CMI could be deployed in Ukraine in approximately 18 months. No procurement arrangement was disclosed at Farnborough, making the timeline a company objective rather than a confirmed delivery schedule. Any deployment would depend on an order, testing, production readiness and integration with the selected sensors, launcher and command-and-control system.

The introduction of CMI reflects a broader shift in European short-range air defense priorities toward greater mobility, increased magazine depth and more sustainable engagement costs against proliferating aerial threats. Its operational value will ultimately depend on demonstrated performance, production capacity and the cost of the complete system—not only the missile itself. If MBDA achieves those objectives, the combination of CMI and surface-launched ASRAAM could provide armed forces with a flexible layered air defense capability capable of countering both mass drone attacks and more demanding airborne threats while preserving higher-end interceptors for missions where they are most needed.
