KNDS Production Ramp-Up Signals Europe’s Renewed Focus on Heavy Armor and Mobile Artillery.


KNDS is expanding production capacity at its Kassel facility to accelerate manufacturing of advanced turret systems for the Leopard 2A8 main battle tank and the RCH 155 wheeled howitzer, a move detailed during German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius’ visit on July 21, 2026, according to the company. The expansion strengthens one of Europe’s most critical armored-vehicle production capabilities, increasing the ability to deliver combat-ready land systems as demand for high-intensity warfare capabilities grows following lessons from the war in Ukraine.

Kassel will produce some of the most technologically complex elements of both platforms, integrating firepower, protection, sensors, digital command systems, and the RCH 155’s fully automated Artillery Gun Module into complete combat modules. Together with KNDS’s broader manufacturing expansion for the Leopard 2, Boxer, and Puma programs, the investment reinforces Europe’s ability to sustain modernization, improve industrial resilience, and generate armored combat power at the pace required for future conflicts.

On July 21, 2026, KNDS detailed the expansion of production capacity at its strategically important Kassel facility during a visit by German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius. The initiative focuses on advanced turret systems for the Leopard 2A8 main battle tank and the RCH 155 wheeled howitzer. Against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine and Europe’s renewed requirement for credible high-intensity land-warfare capabilities, the development demonstrates how industrial capacity is becoming an operational capability in its own right. According to the official KNDS announcement, the Kassel ramp-up forms part of a company-wide effort to meet growing demand for technologically advanced, robust and mission-ready land systems.

Kassel occupies a central position within KNDS Deutschland’s industrial network and is one of the company’s two largest German sites, alongside Munich. During Pistorius’ visit, KNDS highlighted the development and production of state-of-the-art turret systems for the Leopard 2A8 and the RCH 155, including the latter’s technologically advanced, fully automated Artillery Gun Module, or AGM. Modern turret manufacturing extends far beyond producing armored structures: it requires the integration of weapons, stabilized observation systems, fire-control equipment, protection technologies, electronic architecture and crew interfaces into a complete combat module. Expanding capacity at Kassel therefore strengthens one of the most technically demanding and strategically valuable areas of armored-vehicle production. KNDS did not disclose revised annual output targets, investment figures or delivery rates for the site, but confirmed that Kassel plays a key role in the production ramp-up of its central programs.

For the Leopard 2A8, the turret brings together the tank’s firepower, observation, protection and digital command capabilities. Official KNDS announcements presents the latest configuration with the improved 120 mm L55A1 smoothbore gun, upgraded modular protection, enhanced situational-awareness equipment and the Trophy active protection system. Additional turret capacity is particularly significant as European armed forces invest in newly manufactured Leopard 2A8 tanks and seek greater interoperability across their heavy armored formations. KNDS reported in May 2026 that firm Leopard 2A8 orders had exceeded 300 vehicles across Europe, providing a strong industrial rationale for expanding the manufacturing capacity behind the platform.



The RCH 155 represents a complementary response to the changing requirements of artillery warfare. It combines the protection and mobility of the Boxer 8x8 armored vehicle with an unmanned, fully automated and remotely controlled 155 mm/L52 Artillery Gun Module. Two operators remain inside the Boxer’s protected crew compartment, meaning that the RCH 155 is a crewed artillery vehicle fitted with an unmanned gun module rather than a completely unmanned ground system. KNDS lists a 360-degree firing capability and ammunition-dependent engagement ranges of up to 40 km with base-bleed projectiles and up to 54 km with V-LAP ammunition, with longer ranges possible using other compatible rounds. Germany ordered 84 RCH 155 systems in December 2025 under a framework agreement covering up to 500 howitzers, while the United Kingdom ordered 72 systems in May 2026, reinforcing the demand behind the production expansion.

The war in Ukraine has reaffirmed the importance of artillery while exposing conventional firing positions to drones, electronic surveillance, counter-battery radars and long-range precision weapons. On an increasingly transparent battlefield, survivability depends on mobility, dispersion, automation and the ability to reduce the time between receiving a fire mission, engaging a target and leaving the firing area. The RCH 155’s automated ammunition handling, two-person crew and ability to conduct firing missions while moving are intended to reduce the system’s exposure during the counter-battery targeting cycle. Mobility and automation cannot eliminate the threat posed by persistent aerial surveillance or precision attack, but they can reduce the amount of time an artillery system remains stationary and vulnerable. The design also illustrates Pistorius’ argument that future wars will require a balanced combination of manned and unmanned systems: human operators retain command and tactical responsibility while automated subsystems perform loading, laying and other repetitive or hazardous functions.

The Kassel initiative forms part of a wider expansion across KNDS facilities in Germany. The company is consistently increasing production capacities for its principal land-system programs, particularly the Leopard 2 main battle tank, the protected Boxer 8x8 wheeled vehicle and the Puma infantry fighting vehicle. KNDS is also investing in research and development, digitalized manufacturing and partnerships with selected technology and industrial companies to accelerate the transfer of innovations into serial production. The effort is backed by substantial commercial visibility: KNDS reported nearly 11,000 employees, revenue of €4.4 billion in 2025 and an order backlog of €33.1 billion at the end of the year. Converting that demand into delivered systems will nevertheless require sufficient skilled labor and the timely availability of weapons, engines, electronics, armor materials and other critical components throughout the wider supply chain.

The expansion of KNDS’s German manufacturing network is also visible at Görlitz, where the company has transformed a former Alstom rail factory into a multi-program armored-vehicle production hub. As previously reported by Army Recognition, more than half of the facility’s 70,000-square-meter production area was converted within one year of KNDS taking over the site. Görlitz is already producing Leopard 2 hulls and turret housings, Boxer vehicle modules and interiors for the GTF 3 protected transport vehicle, while preparations are underway for Boxer hulls and Puma turret housings. The facility should be described as a structural and component-production site rather than a complete Leopard 2 assembly plant. Taken together, the Kassel and Görlitz developments point toward a more distributed industrial model: Görlitz provides additional structural manufacturing depth, while Kassel plays a central role in developing and producing technologically complex turret systems. This networked approach can distribute workloads, improve resilience and reduce dependence on a single manufacturing location.

KNDS’s production ramp-up at Kassel and the rapid transformation of the Görlitz facility demonstrate that Europe’s land-force renewal is moving from political commitment into industrial execution. By expanding capacity for Leopard 2A8 and RCH 155 turret systems, including the automated AGM, and reinforcing the wider Leopard 2, Boxer and Puma manufacturing network, KNDS is strengthening both operational readiness and the long-term resilience of Germany’s defense-industrial base. The strategic message is clear because future military power will depend as much on industrial capacity to manufacture, modernize, repair and sustain advanced manned and unmanned systems as on possessing those systems themselves.
