Germany Plans €3.4B U.S. Tomahawk and Typhon Missiles Acquisition for Deep Strikes.
Germany is preparing to build a new land-based deep-strike force capable of hitting military targets far inside Russian territory, expanding NATO’s ability to hold critical rear-area assets at risk. The Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) plans to allocate nearly €3.4 billion for U.S.-made Tomahawk cruise missiles and Typhon MRC (Mid-Range Capability) ground-based surface-to-surface missile launchers, according to internal Defense Ministry planning documents POLITICO reported.
The new capability would allow German forces to strike command centers, air bases, missile units, logistics hubs and other high-value targets well beyond the front line. It would significantly strengthen Germany’s role in NATO conventional deterrence by adding long-range precision firepower designed to disrupt an adversary’s ability to sustain and coordinate operations.

The U.S.-made Tomahawk and Typhon missiles system form part of a much broader German long-range weapons buildup estimated at almost €12 billion. According to German Defense Ministry documents seen by POLITICO, the objective is to let German forces strike deep into an adversary's rear area while retaining a conventional response below the nuclear threshold. That requirement marks a major shift in Germany's post-Cold War force structure: instead of relying primarily on combat aircraft for deep attack, the Bundeswehr intends to establish a mobile, ground-launched missile force with strategic reach. Germany is simultaneously pursuing cheaper mass-producible cruise missiles and future Anglo-German weapons, but Tomahawk and Typhon would provide the most mature near-term route to fielding the capability.
The procurement has already advanced beyond an internal spending concept. During a German government press conference on July 10, 2026, the government confirmed that Germany and the United States had reached an agreement permitting Germany to acquire Tomahawk missiles and ground-based Typhon launchers. The German Defense Ministry said the weapon would close an important capability gap in what it calls Deep Precision Strike, while stressing that Germany is also pursuing the European Long-Range Strike Approach and modernizing Taurus into Taurus Neo. The Bundeswehr later confirmed that Germany had submitted a Letter of Request to the U.S. Department of Defense and that any final purchase of this scale would require Bundestag approval.
Typhon, known in the U.S. Army as the Mid-Range Capability, is a road-mobile missile system built around a land-based derivative of the Mk 41 vertical launch architecture. A launcher carries four launch cells and can employ Tomahawk cruise missiles, while the U.S. configuration can also fire SM-6 missiles. The Bundeswehr describes Typhon as a mobile system capable of launching Tomahawks against targets more than 2,000 kilometers away, giving Germany a strike radius fundamentally different from that of its existing land forces. Mobility is also critical: launch units can relocate between firing positions rather than depend on permanent missile installations, complicating enemy surveillance, targeting, and pre-emptive attack.
The comparison with Russia's existing missile forces illustrates why Germany sees the capability as strategically important. Russia's road-mobile Iskander-M ballistic missile has a range of roughly 500 kilometers and is designed for rapid strikes against airfields, headquarters, air-defense sites and other operational targets close to the theater of war. The air-launched Kinzhal has a much longer reported reach of approximately 1,500 to 2,000 km and travels at ballistic-missile speeds, giving Russia a fast strike option against targets deeper inside NATO territory. Tomahawk is fundamentally different: it is a subsonic cruise missile rather than a ballistic weapon, trading speed for very long range, low-altitude flight and flexible routing toward the target. A German Typhon force would therefore not duplicate Iskander or Kinzhal but would give NATO another way to hold Russian rear-area infrastructure at risk from mobile launchers on European territory.
A range exceeding 2,000 kilometers has major operational consequences. Rather than limiting German land forces to targets immediately behind a battlefield, Typhon could allow them to threaten military infrastructure across a much broader portion of the European theater, depending on launcher deployment and approved targeting policy. That could include air bases used to generate Russian combat sorties, command-and-control centers directing operations, long-range missile infrastructure, ammunition and fuel depots, rail nodes and other logistics facilities supporting forces moving toward NATO's eastern flank. The objective is not simply to extend range but to force an adversary to defend assets previously considered protected by distance from the front.
That distinction matters in a possible Russia-NATO war. Russian military operations rely on layered surface-to-air defenses, ballistic and cruise missiles, electronic warfare assets, air bases and a large logistics network extending deep into the rear. A land-based Tomahawk missile force would give Germany another means of attacking elements of that network without first requiring combat aircraft to penetrate the most heavily defended parts of Russian-controlled airspace. It would also impose a wider defensive burden on Russia by forcing Russian commanders to consider mobile NATO launchers capable of striking from well beyond the immediate battlefield.
Germany currently relies heavily on the air-launched Taurus KEPD 350 for conventional long-range precision attack. Taurus remains a powerful weapon, but it depends on combat aircraft reaching suitable launch areas before releasing the missile. Typhon would introduce an independent land-based firing option with substantially greater reach, allowing German commanders to generate deep-strike effects without assigning a combat aircraft to every mission. The two capabilities would therefore be complementary rather than interchangeable: aircraft provide mobility and flexible attack axes, while road-mobile ground launchers provide persistent conventional firepower that can disperse, conceal and relocate between missions.
The reported €3.4 billion level of German defense spending also indicates that the country is considering more than a token purchase. A force of this type requires missiles and launchers as well as command-and-control equipment, support vehicles, communications, training, infrastructure, maintenance, logistics and integration with German and NATO targeting networks. Those supporting elements determine whether Germany receives several launchers for limited use or establishes an operational missile formation capable of generating repeated deep-strike missions during a sustained conflict. The precise breakdown remains undisclosed because the €3.4 billion figure comes from internal planning documents POLITICO reported, not a publicly released procurement contract.
Germany's wider long-range missile program reflects a broader reassessment of European deterrence following Russia's war against Ukraine. POLITICO reported that the German Defense Ministry expects the portfolio will ultimately cost almost € 12 billion, ranging from relatively inexpensive cruise missiles to Tomahawk and future German-British advanced weapons. Internal documents reportedly describe deep strike as a priority for both Germany and NATO, with the aim of holding command centers, airfields, missile launchers and supply hubs at risk hundreds or thousands of kilometers behind an adversary's front.
Germany increasingly regards the absence of such weapons as a vulnerability because Russia already possesses a broad inventory of ballistic and cruise missiles spanning tactical to strategic ranges. Iskander gives Russian ground forces a road-mobile ballistic strike capability at around 500 kilometers, while Kinzhal extends air-launched ballistic reach much farther and Kalibr cruise missiles can attack targets at ranges measured in thousands of kilometers. Germany's planned Tomahawk missile force would not eliminate this imbalance, but it would introduce a conventional response option able to threaten military infrastructure at comparable strategic depth.
Typhon's road mobility would be especially important in the opening phase of a high-intensity conflict. NATO air bases, ammunition depots, headquarters and known fixed missile sites could become priority targets for Russian long-range strikes, making survivability increasingly dependent on dispersion and deception. A mobile missile battery can shift between prepared or temporary launch positions, complicating an opponent's targeting cycle and forcing surveillance assets to locate the launcher before it moves again. This gives Germany a potentially survivable way to preserve deep-strike firepower even after an adversary begins attacking established military infrastructure.
The U.S.-made system is also intended to act as a bridge while Germany develops European alternatives. The German government has confirmed that its long-term approach combines purchasing systems already available on the market, cooperation under the European Long-Range Strike Approach, and the Taurus Neo modernization. That sequencing is strategically significant because European long-range missile programs will require years of development, testing and industrialization, whereas the U.S. Army has already introduced Typhon into service. For Germany, buying an existing American missile system could reduce the period in which the Bundeswehr lacks a substantial ground-launched deep-strike capability.
The procurement also carries an important U.S. defense contract dimension. Tomahawk is an established American missile family, while Typhon brings U.S.-developed naval launch technology onto a mobile ground configuration. A German order worth billions of euros would therefore deepen transatlantic industrial links as Germany invests heavily in European missile programs. It would also place Germany among the NATO countries seeking U.S.-origin long-range weapons specifically to address Russia's missile and anti-access capabilities.
The reported €3.4 billion allocation remains a planning figure, not an approved contract. POLITICO's reporting is based on internal German Defense Ministry documents, and the German government has not publicly disclosed the final missile quantity, number of Typhon launchers, detailed cost structure or basing plan. German officials have also made clear that a procurement of this financial and strategic significance must still pass parliamentary approval. The distinction matters because Germany has secured U.S. political permission to pursue the capability, but the Bundestag will ultimately determine whether the planned funding becomes an acquisition program.
If approved, the purchase would represent one of the most consequential additions to German military capability since the country's post-2022 rearmament accelerated. A Tomahawk-equipped Typhon force would give the Bundeswehr a new land-based means of reaching targets far beyond NATO's forward positions, complicating Russian operational planning and providing another option to suppress air defenses, disrupt reinforcement routes, and strike the command and logistics infrastructure required to sustain a major offensive.
The strategic change is therefore larger than a German purchase of another U.S. missile. Germany is preparing to create a new category of national combat power: a mobile conventional deep-strike force capable of operating at theater ranges and supporting NATO in a high-intensity war against a peer-level adversary. Combined with Germany's broader missile investment, the planned Tomahawk and Typhon missiles acquisition signals that the country is shifting from primarily defending NATO territory at the front toward developing the ability to impose conventional costs deep inside an adversary's military system before those forces can be brought fully to bear.
