Royal Navy Procures Sig MCX Rifle for Specialist Commando Operations.

The Royal Navy has procured more than 1,500 Sig Sauer MCX rifles, equipping its Royal Marines for specialized operations, including counter-terrorism efforts. This significant purchase is part of a broader £6 million investment in the UK Commando Force, facilitated by Edgar Brothers. The new rifles will replace the Colt Canada-produced rifles previously used by the Commando Force, further enhancing the specialized capabilities of this elite unit.

Designed to complement the Royal Marines’ newly introduced general use weapon, the Knights Armament Stoner 1 (KS-1), the Sig MCX represents a vital step in the transformation of the UK Commando Force. This transformation aims to provide the force with the operational advantage needed for global Special Operations. The MCX rifle’s versatility and performance make it an ideal choice for the demanding and varied environments in which the Royal Marines operate, from counter-terrorism to other high-stakes military operations.

Lieutenant Colonel Olly Osborne, part of the Commando Force Programme team, emphasized the significance of these rifles in supporting the Navy and Defence's commitment to enhancing the capabilities of the Commando Force. He stated, "These rifles reinforce the commitment of the Navy and Defence to our transformation, and the value the Commando Force provides to our national and international security. This is an excellent period of investment in the force and provides great confidence through exceptional task-specific modern weaponry."

The MCX was rigorously tested by the Commandos through force-on-force exercises and live-fire drills, ensuring that the rifle meets the operational needs of future users under realistic conditions. The rifle will be a key asset for the Royal Navy’s Littoral Response Groups, a combined force of amphibious ships, aircraft, vehicles, and Commandos, designed to provide a global Crisis Response and Special Operations capability.

This procurement is part of Project Hay, named in tribute to Ronnie Hay, a distinguished Royal Marine and World War II fighter pilot, who exemplified the daring spirit of the Commandos during raids on Nazi-occupied territory. Hay's remarkable service, including his pivotal roles in the Dunkirk evacuation and the Battle of Britain, continues to inspire the ongoing transformation of the Royal Marines into an advanced, highly capable raiding force.

Under Project Hay, Commandos provided valuable user feedback after thoroughly field-testing systems, which was instrumental in shaping the final configurations of the MCX. This process follows the success of Project Hunter, which led to the procurement of the KS-1 rifle. Together, these initiatives reflect the Royal Marines' commitment to modernizing their equipment and capabilities to maintain a strategic edge in global operations.
