Germany's Rheinmetall launches production of KF41 Lynx infantry fighting vehicle in Romania.
According to information published by Rheinmetall on July 28, 2025, the German defense technology group has formally established a comprehensive local production and service network in Romania. The initiative integrates both wholly owned subsidiaries and strategic partnerships with Romanian firms to advance the domestic manufacturing of KF41 Lynx Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs), medium-caliber ammunition, and propellant systems. This development marks a significant milestone in Rheinmetall’s efforts to expand its presence in Eastern Europe and support the modernization of the Romanian Armed Forces through comprehensive defense solutions.

The KF41 Lynx is a new-generation tracked Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) developed by the German Defense Company Rheinmetall to provide unmatched modularity, protection, and firepower in high-intensity combat operations. Designed to meet NATO standards, the Lynx features scalable armor, advanced digital architecture, and an integrated Lance 2.0 turret with a 35mm automatic cannon. It is engineered for both high mobility and long-term upgradeability, making it a versatile solution for modern mechanized infantry units.
The local production drive aligns with Romania’s upcoming acquisition of 246 KF41 Lynx infantry fighting vehicles under a planned €2.5 billion contract with Rheinmetall, intended to equip 15 mechanized infantry battalions with state-of-the-art combat platforms, simulators, and support infrastructure. While the Romanian Ministry of National Defence confirmed in May 2025 that the contract is a high priority for the current year, the agreement has not yet been formally signed. Officials are considering both a public procurement process and a direct government-to-government arrangement to accelerate the timeline, with the latter viewed as the most likely path for a signature before the end of 2025.
The production of the KF41 Lynx IFV will be centralized at Rheinmetall Automecanica in Mediaș, which will coordinate a localized supply chain designed to minimize reliance on external sources while maximizing Romanian industrial participation. Rheinmetall Munitions Romania is tasked with producing medium-caliber ammunition for both infantry and air defense applications, while propellants will be manufactured at the Victoria Explosive Powder Factory. For this purpose, Rheinmetall is transferring critical expertise to establish a new propylene plant, reinforcing the local production of energetic materials. In addition, on-site service hubs will ensure the operational readiness of military platforms by offering ongoing maintenance and repair support within national borders.
A key pillar of this strategic initiative is the creation of a Rheinmetall Excellence Centre in Romania. This advanced facility will serve as a national hub for training and workforce development, offering immersive programs using state-of-the-art simulators and instruction platforms. The goal is to empower Romanian technicians and engineers with the skills necessary to support, maintain and evolve high-tech systems like the Lynx IFV, bolstering domestic defense know-how and autonomy in key technology areas.
Strategic cooperation agreements have also been signed with local firms such as Uzina Automecanica Moreni, Interactive Software SRL and MarcTel-SIT. These collaborations will localize significant parts of the production and development processes, enhancing the national defense industry's role in Rheinmetall’s supply and innovation ecosystem. By embedding Romanian capabilities within Rheinmetall’s global production architecture, the initiative supports the long-term resilience and competitiveness of local defense enterprises.
Rheinmetall’s investment is projected to generate several hundred skilled jobs across engineering, manufacturing, software, and logistics domains. Beyond direct employment, the localization strategy will stimulate ancillary industries and create a robust defense manufacturing ecosystem in Romania. The program is also expected to boost Romania's strategic autonomy by cultivating sovereign capabilities in armored vehicle production and advanced munitions supply, in alignment with NATO interoperability standards and national defense objectives.
This initiative positions Romania as a critical node in Rheinmetall’s global defense infrastructure and establishes a scalable model for defense industrial cooperation in Europe. As regional security challenges evolve, Rheinmetall’s local presence in Romania underscores a long-term commitment to strengthening allied capabilities and enabling sovereign defense solutions through advanced technology integration and localized production.
