US Air Force Tests Forward Refueling of F-22 Raptor fighter to Extend Operational Reach in Indo-Pacific.
The U.S. Air Force demonstrated how forward arming and refueling point operations can keep F-22 Raptor stealth fighters in combat during a potential Indo-Pacific crisis, using fuel supplied by an MC-130J Commando II during Beverly Beach 26-1 at Kadena Air Base, Japan. The method allows fighters to refuel rapidly from expeditionary locations, extending operational reach while reducing the time aircraft remain exposed on the ground.
Combined with hot-pit refueling, the procedure enables an F-22 to take on fuel with its engines running and return to flight with minimal delay. This capability could support dispersed operations across the Indo-Pacific by reducing dependence on fixed bases and giving stealth fighters greater flexibility to operate from austere or temporary locations.

The August 4, 2026 event brought together the 18th Logistics Readiness Squadron, U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor personnel, and an MC-130J assigned to Kadena. More importantly, it validated how U.S. combat aircraft can recover, refuel and return to operations from expeditionary locations during regional escalation, emergency deployments or disruptions affecting established air bases.
Forward arming and refueling point operations are particularly relevant in the Indo-Pacific, where long distances and dependence on a limited number of major air bases create serious challenges during a fast-moving contingency. By moving fuel and support teams closer to operational areas, the Air Force can reduce reliance on permanent installations and create additional locations from which fighters can rapidly regenerate sorties.
This directly supports the U.S. Air Force's Agile Combat Employment concept. Rather than concentrating aircraft, fuel and personnel at predictable bases, ACE distributes combat power across multiple locations, giving commanders more options to reposition forces quickly if a primary installation becomes unavailable or operational conditions deteriorate.
The F-22 Raptor gives the U.S. Air Force a high-end air-superiority capability built around stealth, supercruise, advanced sensors and highly integrated avionics. Its ability to detect, track and engage hostile aircraft while reducing its own radar signature allows it to operate in heavily contested airspace, while AIM-120 AMRAAM and AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles provide beyond-visual-range and close-range engagement options. In an Indo-Pacific crisis, rapidly refueling and relaunching the F-22 would be especially important because every additional sortie could help protect tanker and support aircraft, escort strike forces and maintain air superiority during the most critical phases of an emergency deployment.
For the F-22, this logistics capability is therefore directly tied to combat effectiveness. A fighter that remains on the ground for extended periods cannot contribute to defensive counter-air, offensive counter-air or escort missions, regardless of the sophistication of its sensors, weapons or low-observable design.
Hot-pit refueling directly reduces that vulnerability. Instead of shutting down the fighter and completing a conventional servicing cycle, fuel personnel begin refueling shortly after landing while the engines remain running, reducing turnaround time and returning the aircraft to its mission more quickly.
The use of the MC-130J Commando II adds mobility to the concept. The special operations transport aircraft can move fuel, personnel and equipment into forward locations, allowing commanders to establish temporary refueling points without relying exclusively on fixed fuel farms and permanent logistics infrastructure.
This creates an important operational alternative to aerial refueling. Tanker aircraft remain essential for extending fighter endurance, but tanker availability could become constrained during a regional emergency by distance, tasking demands, airfield disruption or the requirement to reposition support aircraft.
A ground-based FARP gives commanders another option by allowing fuel to be moved toward the fighter rather than forcing every aircraft to return to a major operating base or wait for an available tanker. That flexibility could allow F-22 detachments to continue flying even if part of the normal support network were temporarily disrupted.
In a sudden Western Pacific crisis, that capability could become decisive. Major installations such as Kadena could face operational disruption from runway damage, infrastructure failures, emergency evacuation requirements or other contingency conditions, making the ability to disperse fighters and support them from secondary or temporary locations increasingly important.
Dispersing F-22s across several operating locations reduces the number of aircraft dependent on any single base, while mobile refueling teams help ensure those fighters can continue generating missions. The operational effect is not simply greater survivability, but also greater freedom to reposition airpower as a regional incident develops.
The Beverly Beach 26-1 operation also tested personnel under degraded conditions. Airmen conducted tasks while wearing mission-oriented protective posture equipment, forcing fuels teams to work while dealing with the restrictions imposed by protective gear and reinforcing their ability to maintain aircraft generation during contaminated or otherwise degraded operating conditions.
The operational result is a more resilient fighter force. Even if a primary base, fuel facility, or tanker support route becomes temporarily unavailable, commanders retain additional options for sustaining air operations and keeping fifth-generation fighters in the fight.
That flexibility would be particularly important during the opening hours of an Indo-Pacific contingency, when commanders may need to reposition aircraft rapidly before the full logistics network is established. A fighter detachment that can land at an alternate airfield, receive fuel from a mobile team and return to the air can respond faster to a regional incident than one tied exclusively to fixed support infrastructure.
For the Indo-Pacific, the importance therefore goes beyond saving several minutes during refueling. FARP and hot-pit operations increase the number of locations from which U.S. fighters can operate, shorten the time aircraft remain exposed on the ground, and give commanders additional options during base disruption or sudden escalation.
They also help offset one of the fundamental challenges facing U.S. airpower in the region: geography. Pacific operations involve vast distances between bases, meaning any unexpected loss of access, fuel capacity or tanker support can quickly reduce the number of available fighter sorties.
A distributed refueling network helps reduce that vulnerability. Fuel can be repositioned alongside aircraft, allowing commanders to adapt the support structure as rapidly as the operational situation changes.
This matters because a regional crisis may develop faster than permanent logistics infrastructure can be reinforced. Mobile refueling operations therefore provide an immediate bridge between the initial deployment of combat aircraft and the establishment of a larger sustainment network.
The capability strengthens both survivability and sortie generation. An F-22 force able to shift between several expeditionary locations, receive fuel rapidly and return to the air is less dependent on the continued availability of any single airfield, tanker orbit or fuel facility.
That resilience also improves deterrence. A regional actor considering rapid escalation must account not only for U.S. aircraft positioned at major bases, but also for the possibility that those aircraft could disperse and continue operating from alternative locations even after the normal support structure is disrupted.
Beverly Beach 26-1 ultimately demonstrated that the effectiveness of fifth-generation combat aircraft depends as much on resilient logistics as on stealth, sensors and weapons. By combining the F-22 Raptor with mobile MC-130J-supported refueling and rapid hot-pit procedures, the U.S. Air Force is strengthening a contingency capability designed to keep air-superiority fighters operating through base disruption, tanker shortages and the first critical stages of an Indo-Pacific crisis.
