U.S. Air Force B-2 Spirit Bomber Reveals Deep Strike Method Against Hardened Targets.
Seven U.S. Air Force B-2 Spirit bombers struck Iran’s Fordow and Natanz nuclear sites in June 2025 with 14 GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator bombs, marking the weapon’s first operational use. Operation Midnight Hammer showed how the United States can combine stealth, intercontinental range, aerial refueling and air-defense suppression to place its heaviest conventional penetrating weapon against deeply buried targets.
The seven B-2s flew east from Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, during an 18-hour approach conducted with minimal communications and multiple aerial refuelings, while other B-2s flew west as part of a deception operation. U.S. fighter and support aircraft moved ahead of the bombers to search for Iranian fighters and surface-to-air missile threats before the strike package entered Iranian airspace. Six B-2s delivered 12 GBU-57s against Fordow, while a seventh released two against Natanz. The 30,000-pound weapon was specifically developed to penetrate and destroy deeply buried, hardened facilities that conventional bombs cannot reliably reach. The mission extended beyond 13,000 miles round trip and kept crews airborne for roughly 36 hours, demonstrating that the B-2 can carry bunker-busting weapons from the continental United States directly into a distant combat theater without relying on a forward bomber base.

The mission relied on a force package far larger than the B-2s operating over Iran. The main formation flew east under restricted communications, while another group was sent toward the Pacific as part of a deception effort. Several aerial refueling cycles supported the transit before fighters and specialized support assets joined the operation. More than 125 aircraft took part in Midnight Hammer, while a US submarine launched Tomahawk cruise missiles in parallel. The overall architecture was intended to disrupt several layers of the opposing air defense system before the bombers reached their targets.
On June 1, 2026, the 509th Bomb Wing released additional details on this operational cycle from Whiteman Air Force Base. The unit confirmed that its personnel had only a few weeks to prepare Midnight Hammer and that seven B-2s carrying GBU-57s were committed against Iranian nuclear sites. It also highlighted the aircraft’s participation in Operation Rough Rider in Yemen, described as the largest B-2 deployment in the bomber’s history. The same aircraft type was therefore used in 2025 both for a concentrated strike against hardened strategic infrastructure and for sustained conventional strike operations against the Houthis.
This level of activity is carried by a very small fleet. The US Air Force operates 20 B-2s in the active force, including one assigned to testing, and Whiteman remains their only operational base. The first Spirit of Missouri was delivered there in December 1993, while the type achieved initial operational capability in April 1997. Northrop Grumman remains the prime contractor for an aircraft whose sustainment requires extensive support. A contract with a ceiling of $7 billion covers modernization, logistics support, software maintenance and programmed depot maintenance through May 2029.
The availability of each airframe therefore has unusual operational weight. Spirit of Ohio returned to operations on June 23, 2026, after scheduled maintenance at Northrop Grumman’s Palmdale facility. Such work includes restoration of low observable characteristics, structural inspections and replacement of aging components. With a fleet of this size, the removal or return of a single aircraft affects the number of bombers that can be allocated at the same time to operational missions, training and the nuclear deterrence mission.
The B-2 measures 20.9 meters in length, has a wingspan of 52.12 meters and reaches a maximum takeoff weight of 152.6 tonnes. Its four General Electric F118-GE-100 turbofan engines each produce 17,300 pounds of thrust. The aircraft flies at high subsonic speed, operates at altitudes up to about 15,240 meters, and has an unrefueled range of roughly 6,000 nautical miles, or about 9,600 kilometers. It can carry up to 60,000 pounds, or 27.2 tonnes, of conventional or nuclear weapons in internal bays. The crew consists of two pilots.
Its low observability is based on the combination of the flying-wing configuration, composite materials, and specialized coatings that reduce radar, infrared, and electromagnetic signatures. This design becomes particularly relevant when paired with the GBU-57. The Massive Ordnance Penetrator weighs about 30,000 pounds, or 13.6 tonnes, and must be brought sufficiently close to the target to be released under conditions suitable for attacking a deeply buried structure. Fourteen GBU-57s were used against Fordow and Natanz during Midnight Hammer.
The Iran raid also shows that stealth is only one element of penetration. An air defense network must detect the bomber, establish a usable track, transmit that information, and then place a missile system or fighter in a valid engagement position. Deception, electronic warfare, fighter support and suppression of enemy air defenses are intended to disrupt this sequence. The B-2 then exploits that disruption to reach its release area. The operation therefore does not show that a stealth bomber can independently cross any integrated air defense network, but rather that a joint force architecture can create an access window for a small number of high-value platforms.
Subsequent developments have broadened this mission set further. In June 2026, a B-2 launched an AGM-158C Long Range Anti-Ship Missile against a naval target during Valiant Shield in the Pacific, adding stand-off anti-ship strike to the aircraft’s recently demonstrated roles in penetrating defended airspace and attacking hardened targets. For Chinese, Russian or North Korean planners, the challenge posed by the B-2 therefore extends beyond low observability alone. It involves protecting buried infrastructure and mobile forces while preserving a functioning detection and engagement chain under jamming and attack. With only 20 aircraft, Washington operates a capability that is difficult to regenerate quickly, but Midnight Hammer and Valiant Shield illustrate why long-range penetrating strike remains central as the B-21 Raider moves toward gradually assuming this mission.
