Massachusetts U.S. Air National Guard Replaces F-15 With F-35A Fighter Jets for Homeland Defense.


The Massachusetts Air National Guard is replacing its F-15 Eagles with F-35A Lightning II stealth fighters at Barnes U.S. Air National Guard Base, giving the 104th Fighter Wing a major increase in survivability, sensing, and combat reach for homeland defense and high-intensity operations. The formal transition on September 13, 2026, marks the wing’s shift to a fifth-generation mission that can defend U.S. airspace while operating against advanced peer air-defense networks.

The F-35A adds low-observable penetration, advanced sensors, and networked targeting capabilities that allow the wing to detect threats earlier and operate in contested airspace where legacy fighters face greater risk. That combination strengthens 24-hour homeland defense while giving the Air National Guard a more credible role in future conflicts against sophisticated Russian- or Chinese-class air defenses.

A key sign of that shift came one day earlier, when the 104th Fighter Wing activated a dedicated 104th Munitions Squadron as part of its F-35A conversion. The U.S. Air National Guard says the new organization will allow roughly twice the previous munitions manpower and improve the wing’s ability to support larger exercises, dispersed operations and rapid combat sortie generation, showing that Barnes is being structured as a deployable F-35A combat hub rather than simply a base receiving new aircraft.

The September ceremony should therefore not be interpreted as the first arrival of the F-35A in Massachusetts. The wing’s first four aircraft reached Barnes on June 11, 2026. What changed in September was the operational status of the organization: the 104th is now formally shifting from its legacy F-15 mission toward a force structure centered on stealth, sensor fusion, advanced electronic warfare, and networked combat operations.

That transition has direct implications for U.S. homeland air defense. The 104th Fighter Wing continues to maintain a 24-hour alert mission protecting U.S. airspace in the northeastern United States, but the F-35A gives the unit capabilities that go significantly beyond those of the F-15C/D fighters it replaces. Its active electronically scanned array radar, distributed infrared sensors, electro-optical targeting equipment, and integrated mission systems can combine multiple data sources into a single tactical picture, improving the pilot’s ability to detect, classify, and track airborne threats.

For a homeland-defense mission, that means an alert F-35A can operate not only as an interceptor but also as an advanced airborne sensor that can share threat information with other U.S. forces. That becomes increasingly important as the United States prepares for more complex aerospace threats, including long-range cruise missiles, unmanned aerial systems, and aircraft operating with electronic warfare support rather than the traditional peacetime task of intercepting unidentified civilian or military aircraft.

The same aircraft can then be deployed overseas for a very different mission. The F-35A was designed to penetrate and operate within heavily defended airspace, using reduced radar signature, electronic warfare systems, and fused sensor data to survive against modern surface-to-air missile batteries and hostile fighter networks. Those characteristics make the aircraft relevant to conflicts involving Russian or Chinese integrated air-defense systems, where fourth-generation fighters operating without extensive support would face substantially greater detection and engagement risks.

The F-35A can conduct air-to-air combat, precision strike, intelligence collection, and electronic support missions while carrying weapons internally to preserve its low-observable configuration. Its combination of stealth and networked sensors also lets the fighter identify threats and transmit targeting information to other aircraft and joint forces, meaning an F-35A sortie's value extends beyond the weapons it carries.

This is the most important difference between the new force at Barnes and the F-15C/D organization it replaces. The Eagle provided the 104th Fighter Wing with a highly capable air-superiority and interception aircraft, but the F-35A gives the Massachusetts Air National Guard a multirole fighter designed for operations inside a much more heavily contested electromagnetic and air-defense environment. The change therefore preserves the wing’s domestic alert role while giving it substantially greater relevance to a major-power conflict.

The conversion follows the Department of the Air Force’s final Record of Decision in December 2024, which selected Barnes for the F-35A mission. The wing subsequently completed the drawdown of its F-15 force, ending the Eagle era and beginning the infrastructure, training, and support transformation required to operate the fifth-generation fighter.

The creation of the 104th Munitions Squadron is particularly important because F-35A combat capability depends on more than aircraft numbers. Fighters must be armed, inspected, maintained and returned to flight quickly, particularly during high-tempo operations. Increasing the number of personnel dedicated to munitions gives the wing greater capacity to sustain repeated combat sorties and support more demanding exercises and deployments.

That expansion also aligns Barnes with the U.S. Air Force emphasis on dispersed operations. In a conflict involving long-range Russian or Chinese missiles, major air bases could become priority targets, forcing U.S. fighters to operate from multiple smaller or temporary locations. Under those conditions, weapons crews must be able to move munitions, prepare aircraft, and generate sorties from austere sites with limited infrastructure.

By expanding its weapons-support organization alongside the arrival of the F-35A, the 104th Fighter Wing is building the manpower needed for that type of distributed combat operation. The change increases the probability that Barnes-based aircraft could continue generating missions even when operating away from their home installation, a requirement increasingly central to U.S. Air Force planning for a Pacific or European conflict.

The Massachusetts transition also adds another source of fifth-generation combat capacity inside the United States. Air National Guard F-35A units can maintain domestic aerospace-control missions during peacetime while still supplying aircraft, pilots, and support personnel to combatant commanders during an overseas contingency. That dual-purpose structure allows the U.S. Air Force to strengthen homeland defense without creating a fighter force restricted to domestic operations.

For the 104th Fighter Wing, the result is a fundamental change in combat relevance. Barnes is no longer simply transitioning from one fighter type to another; it is becoming a fifth-generation operating location able to support persistent U.S. air defense, dispersed sortie generation, and deployment into highly contested airspace. The combination of F-35A stealth fighters, expanded munitions manpower, and the wing’s existing 24-hour alert mission gives Massachusetts a larger role in both continental defense and the U.S. military’s preparation for high-end conflict.
