US Air Force retires final EC-130H Compass Call aircraft after 45 years of electronic warfare service.
On September 2, 2026, the U.S. Air Force completed the final flight of the EC-130H Compass Call at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, concluding 45 years of Hercules-based airborne electronic attack operations. The retirement marks the formal shift of the airborne jamming mission to the jet-powered EA-37B Compass Call, which delivers increased speed, altitude, and operational range while reducing crew size by 30.8%. The transition updates the Air Force's standoff electronic warfare fleet to maintain survivability and standoff range against modern integrated air defense networks.
The EC-130H Compass Call fleet concluded operational service after accumulating more than 76,000 combat flight hours across global deployments, including Operation Just Cause, Desert Storm, and Operation Epic Fury. Replacing the 14-aircraft turboprop fleet with up to 22 EA-37B Gulfstream G550 derivatives lowers operating costs by approximately 50% while expanding operational range to 6,300 miles and service ceiling to 51,000 feet.

On September 2, 2026, the U.S. Air Force completed the final EC-130H Compass Call flight, ending 45 years of Hercules-based airborne electronic attacks as the mission transfers to the EA-37B. Aircraft 73-1590, callsign VOLT01, departed Davis-Monthan AFB at about 07:00 and returned six hours later after flying with an EA-37B and an F-16D of the 152nd Fighter Squadron in the first formation combining the two Compass Call aircraft. The EC-130H first flew in 1981, was first delivered on March 12, 1982, achieved initial operational capability in 1983, and entered combat during Operation Just Cause in December 1989. Only 14 EC-130Hs formed the operational fleet, declining to 2-4 aircraft near retirement. The final aircraft's waiver expired on September 30, 2026, while retaining an EC-130H for up to two additional years was estimated at $14 million per aircraft.
Retirement nevertheless occurred during active combat demand, as both the EC-130H and its successor were employed during Operation Epic Fury against Iran in 2026. The EC-130H was an electronic attack aircraft whose C-130H airframe supplied the volume, power, and endurance required by a permanently installed mission suite. It measured 29.3 m long, 39.7 m across the wings, and 11.4 m high, with operating weights of 48,534 kg for Block 1s and 46,720 kg for Block 2s. Four 4,910-shp Allison T56-A-15 turboprop engines produced 19,640 shp combined, while fuel capacity reached 28,182 kg. Maximum speed was 300 mph (Mach 0.52) at 20,000 ft, with a 25,000 ft ceiling and a 2,295 miles (3,694 km) range, supplemented by aerial refueling. Its $165 million published unit cost included receivers, processors, high-power transmitters, antennas, operator consoles, cooling, and additional electrical equipment rather than conventional weapons.
Its official armament was "non-kinetic energy waveforms", but retaining the Compass Call equipment on the Hercules also imposed a 300 mph and 25,000 ft flight envelope increasingly restrictive for stand-off electronic attack. Crew composition further illustrates the scale of the installed mission system. Of 13 personnel, only four (aircraft commander, copilot, navigator, and flight engineer) operated the aircraft, while nine, or 69.2%, supported electronic attack. These comprised two electronic warfare officers, a mission crew supervisor, four analysis operators/cryptologic linguists, an acquisition operator, and an airborne maintenance technician. The former cargo compartment therefore contained mission consoles, receivers, processors, transmitters, and electronic racks rather than transport payloads. The EA-37B reduces this crew from 13 to nine, a 30.8% decrease.
Ten simultaneously crewed aircraft consequently require 90 airborne personnel instead of 130, while a 22-aircraft force requires 198 rather than 286 under the EC-130H crew structure, eliminating 88 airborne positions from an equivalent fleet. The Compass Call's target set expanded considerably, but without replacing the underlying Hercules. Its initial function centered on command-and-control communications, disrupting voice and data exchanges between adversarial headquarters and subordinate units, while subsequent configurations added early-warning, acquisition radars, and navigation systems. Block 35 Baseline 1 increased effective radiated power, frequency coverage, and digital signal processing while improving fleet commonality, interfaces, reliability, and fault detection.
Baseline 2 increased precision and attack capacity while reducing operator workload and adding satellite communications, multi-aircraft coordination networks and upgraded data links. Specialized "clip-in" capabilities allowed new functions to be inserted without replacing the complete mission suite, while several EC-130Hs received glass cockpits and color radar with weather, ground-mapping and wind-shear modes. Compass Call consequently underwent repeated processor, transmitter, communications, and software modernization while remaining tied to essentially the same C-130H performance envelope. Fourteen aircraft nevertheless sustained a combat workload measured in tens of thousands of hours. Following Panama in 1989 and Desert Storm in 1991, EC-130Hs operated in Kosovo, Haiti, Libya, Iraq, Serbia, and Afghanistan.
Afghanistan-related operations from 2002 through 2015 generated more than 40,000 hours across roughly 6,900 combat sorties, averaging 5.8 hours per sortie. By January 2020, the 41st Expeditionary Electronic Combat Squadron had exceeded 45,000 hours and 7,900 combat sorties supporting Enduring Freedom and Freedom's Sentinel, while the 43rd had provided more than 32,000 electronic attack hours to Operation Iraqi Freedom before deactivating on October 1, 2019. The 55th Electronic Combat Group had accumulated 11,577 combat sorties and nearly 71,000 flight hours by 2020, rising to more than 76,000 combat hours during the EC-130H's final 20 years by September 2026. Those totals came from a relatively small fleet that simultaneously had to cover combat deployments, training, modernization, and depot maintenance.
All EC-130Hs were consequently concentrated within Air Combat Command's 55th Electronic Combat Group at Davis-Monthan AFB, which reported to the 55th Wing at Offutt AFB. The organization comprised the operational 41st and 43rd Electronic Combat Squadrons, the 42nd ECS training unit, 755th Operations Support Squadron, and 755th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. The 42nd ECS trained about 200 students annually to sustain pilots, navigators, electronic warfare officers, linguists, and mission specialists. Big Safari and the 661st Aeronautical Systems Squadron in Waco managed mission system modernization, with BAE Systems supplying prime mission equipment and L3 handling aircraft integration and depot maintenance.
L3's 2017 selection to transfer Compass Call equipment to the G550 therefore shifted the program from extending individual C-130Hs toward replacing the carrier aircraft while retaining much of the electronic attack architecture. The EA-37B places roughly 70% of the EC-130H electronic warfare equipment aboard a twin-BR710C4-11-powered Gulfstream G550 derivative with a substantially different operating envelope. Maximum speed doubles from 300 to 600 mph, range increases from 2,295 to 6,300 miles, a 4,005-mile or 174.5% increase, and ceiling rises from 25,000 to 51,000 ft, adding 26,000 ft or 104%. The 51,000 ft operating altitude expands line-of-sight geometry against terrestrial emitters, while twice the speed reduces transit and repositioning times between electronic attack orbits.
Crew falls 30.8% from 13 to nine, and operating cost is nearly 50% lower. The first EA-37B arrived at Davis-Monthan in August 2024; the 43rd ECS flew its first training sortie on May 2, 2025, an aircraft deployed to Kadena AB by September 2025, and another reached Ramstein AB on January 26, 2026. The type then entered combat during Operation Epic Fury in March 2026 before formal operational declaration. However, the transition could ultimately increase Compass Call aircraft inventory rather than simply recapitalize it. Five EA-37Bs had been delivered by April 2026; Congress increased the program from 10 to 12 aircraft in FY2026, and the FY2027 request adds $660 million for three more, equivalent to $220 million per aircraft when divided across the requested quantity.
U.S. Air Force planning for another seven through 2031 could raise the inventory to 22 EA-37Bs, eight more than the historical 14-aircraft EC-130H fleet, a 57.1% increase, and 12 more than the original 10-aircraft EA-37B plan. At nine crew members each, 22 aircraft require 198 airborne positions for one crew set compared with 182 for the entire 14-aircraft EC-130H fleet, meaning a 57% larger aircraft inventory would require only 8.8% more airborne personnel than the former peak force. Combined with a 600 mph speed, a 51,000 ft ceiling, 6,300-mile range, and nearly 50% lower operating cost, the planned inventory creates the possibility of more geographically distributed Compass Call detachments. The determining force-generation metric will be how many of the 22 aircraft remain combat-coded and available after training, testing, depot maintenance, and modernization requirements are deducted from the nominal fleet.
