Rather than competing with KAAN, the aircraft is positioned as a strategic bridge that preserves combat effectiveness through the 2030s as Türkiye gradually transitions to its next-generation fighter fleet.

On 30 July 2026, BAE Systems confirmed that manufacturing is underway for the 20 Eurofighter Typhoon combat aircraft ordered by Türkiye, with the first delivery scheduled for 2030. The announcement moves the landmark British-Turkish programme from the contractual phase into industrial execution across the United Kingdom and the wider Eurofighter partner network. For Türkiye, the timing is strategically significant: Typhoon can reinforce high-end combat-air readiness while the indigenous KAAN fighter advances through development, testing and initial force integration. Rather than competing with KAAN, the Eurofighter programme appears positioned to support Türkiye’s carefully managed transition toward fifth-generation air power.
A Landmark British-Turkish Combat-Air Programme
BAE Systems said production activity has begun in the United Kingdom and across the Eurofighter partner nations, with final assembly of the Turkish aircraft scheduled to take place at the company’s Warton facility in Lancashire. Under the agreement, BAE Systems will manufacture major airframe components, conduct final assembly and lead weapons integration, while the wider programme draws on the industrial capabilities of Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. Eurofighter is Europe’s largest collaborative defence programme, bringing together BAE Systems, Airbus Defence and Space and Leonardo within a supply chain of approximately 400 European companies. The move into production therefore gives the Turkish order substantial industrial and political permanence, embedding it within one of NATO Europe’s most important combat-air manufacturing ecosystems.
The original agreement, signed on 27 October 2025, covers 20 new-build Typhoons and an associated weapons and integration package. BAE Systems valued this element of the programme at approximately £5.4 billion, while the British government placed the potential value of the wider agreement at up to £8 billion. The package includes the MBDA Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile and is expected to sustain more than 20,000 highly skilled positions across the UK supply chain. Türkiye will become the tenth air force to operate Typhoon, marking a significant expansion of defence-industrial relations between Ankara and London. For Britain, the order preserves sovereign aerospace engineering and production capacity into the 2030s; for Türkiye, it provides access to a mature combat-air platform backed by an established European industrial base.
Eurofighter Typhoon is a twin-engine, supersonic multirole combat aircraft designed to conduct air-superiority, interception, precision-strike and defensive counter-air missions. Its operational architecture combines advanced sensors, high-speed tactical data links, electronic-warfare capabilities and modern air-to-air weapons, allowing the platform to operate in complex and contested electromagnetic environments. Typhoon also performs continuous Quick Reaction Alert and NATO air-policing missions, including operations supporting the defence of Europe’s eastern flank. For the Turkish Air Force, the platform will provide an established high-performance capability able to contribute to national air defence, Alliance interoperability and multinational combat-air operations from the beginning of the next decade.
A Managed Transition Toward KAAN
The timing of the first Typhoon delivery is central to understanding Ankara’s wider fighter-modernisation strategy. Türkiye has previously set an objective of beginning KAAN deliveries from 2028, while Turkish Aerospace describes the indigenous aircraft as a next-generation platform intended to replace Turkish F-16s progressively from the 2030s. However, initial aircraft delivery and the creation of a fully combat-capable fleet are separate milestones. Flight testing, certification, weapons clearance, mission-system validation, aircrew conversion, maintenance preparation and squadron-level force generation must all be completed before a new fighter can achieve operational maturity at scale. The overlap between Typhoon deliveries and KAAN’s planned introduction therefore suggests a phased and deliberately risk-managed transition rather than a choice between two competing aircraft.
Rather than replacing KAAN, the Eurofighter appears designed to de-risk Türkiye’s transition toward a fifth-generation air force by preserving operational continuity through the 2030s. Typhoon can deliver a mature air-superiority and beyond-visual-range engagement capability while KAAN progresses through prototype testing, certification, production expansion, weapons integration and operational evaluation. This sequencing could reduce pressure to accelerate the indigenous programme solely to meet near-term force-structure requirements, allowing Turkish engineers and military authorities to maintain disciplined development and evaluation standards. KAAN remains the centrepiece of Türkiye’s sovereign combat-air ambition, incorporating low observability, internal weapons carriage, sensor fusion, advanced situational awareness and an integrated mission-system architecture. Typhoon’s role is therefore not to displace that vision, but to provide the Turkish Air Force with a proven operational foundation while the national platform moves toward full readiness.
Training, Sustainment and NATO Interoperability
The wider programme extends well beyond aircraft production. Under a separate support agreement announced on 25 March 2026, BAE Systems will provide spares, ground-support equipment, high-fidelity training simulators, electronic-warfare capabilities and technical services for an initial three-year period after the aircraft enter service. The Royal Air Force will train 10 Turkish instructor pilots and nearly 100 Turkish maintenance trainers across mechanical, avionics, weapons and mission-system disciplines, enabling the Turkish Air Force to develop an increasingly sovereign training and support structure. These arrangements demonstrate that the programme is intended to establish a durable Turkish operational capability rather than create long-term dependence on external personnel. Although Typhoon and KAAN remain technologically distinct programmes, the experience gained in advanced fleet management, mission planning, electronic warfare, sortie generation and complex sustainment may also strengthen Türkiye’s broader institutional capacity as it expands its next-generation aerospace ecosystem.
The Typhoon programme demonstrates that Türkiye’s pursuit of defence-industrial autonomy can advance alongside deeper cooperation with Britain and NATO. KAAN represents Türkiye’s sovereign technological ambition, while Typhoon provides access to an Allied combat-air network with established operational procedures, training standards and multinational support structures. The acquisition is expected to strengthen NATO’s combat-air capability in a strategically important region, enhance interoperability between the Turkish Air Force and the Royal Air Force, and reinforce the Alliance’s collective deterrence posture. Türkiye’s position between Europe, the Black Sea, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East gives its combat-air readiness significance beyond national airspace. The programme consequently honours both Türkiye’s sovereign aerospace objectives and Britain’s position as a leading combat-air partner, showing that national industrial development and trusted Allied cooperation can be mutually reinforcing.
The start of Turkish Typhoon production represents more than the execution of a 20-aircraft order. It establishes the industrial, training and operational foundations of a long-term British-Turkish combat-air partnership at a critical stage in Türkiye’s force modernisation. From 2030, Typhoon can reinforce air-defence readiness, beyond-visual-range combat capability and NATO interoperability, while KAAN continues to advance as Türkiye’s sovereign fifth-generation fighter. Viewed together, the two programmes do not represent competing strategic visions: they form complementary elements of a carefully sequenced force-development model. Typhoon can protect operational continuity during the transition, while KAAN provides the technological sovereignty and next-generation capability that will shape Turkish air power in the decades ahead, strengthening Türkiye, supporting Britain’s combat-air industrial base and contributing to NATO’s collective security.
