Australia will become the first country outside the United States to operate the AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile, with Canberra announcing an almost A$736 million acquisition on 6 August 2026 during Exercise Pitch Black. On 6 August 2026, Australia announced an investment of almost A$736 million to acquire the U.S.-developed AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile (JATM), significantly strengthening the Royal Australian Air Force’s long-range air-to-air combat capability. Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles unveiled the decision during Exercise Pitch Black in Darwin, Australia’s premier multinational air combat exercise. According to the Australian Government, the acquisition will make Australia the first country outside the United States to operate the AIM-260, marking a major step in Canberra’s effort to reinforce deterrence, layered air and missile defence, and interoperability with U.S. forces across the Indo-Pacific.
AIM-260 JATM: Preserving the BVR Combat Advantage
The AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile is more than a longer-reaching successor to AMRAAM; it is central to the U.S. effort to preserve the first-shot advantage in an increasingly unforgiving beyond-visual-range battlespace. Developed by Lockheed Martin under a highly classified joint-service program, JATM emerged as the United States confronted a new generation of long-range air-to-air threats capable of challenging the engagement envelope traditionally enjoyed by American and allied fighters. When the program was publicly acknowledged in 2019, U.S. Air Force officials confirmed that AIM-260 was being developed with greater reach than the AIM-120 AMRAAM and specifically identified China’s PL-15 among the threats driving the requirement.
The significance goes beyond raw range: in BVR warfare, extending the launch envelope can alter the geometry of an air battle, allowing a fighter to threaten an opponent earlier, force defensive manoeuvres sooner and preserve greater separation from hostile weapons. Much of JATM’s real combat performance, including its exact range, propulsion architecture, seeker configuration and terminal-energy characteristics, remains classified. What Washington has officially disclosed is nevertheless revealing: U.S. documentation describes AIM-260 as a GPS-aided air-superiority missile offering increased range and effectiveness over existing air-to-air weapons, with encrypted Precise Positioning Service through SAASM or M-Code and integrated anti-tamper protection. For Australia, that combination makes JATM important not simply as another missile, but as a weapon designed to help keep the RAAF on the favorable side of the detect-track-engage sequence that increasingly determines victory in modern air combat.
For the RAAF, JATM should substantially expand the tactical options available beyond the engagement envelope provided by existing AMRAAM variants. The AIM-120D-3 remains an advanced and highly effective active-radar-guided weapon, incorporating inertial navigation, mid-course updates and continually improved software and electronics. AIM-260, however, has been developed specifically to push the engagement boundary farther outward while remaining suitable for tactical fighter operations. Europe’s MBDA Meteor provides another benchmark in the long-range air-to-air missile category, using a variable-flow ducted-rocket propulsion system to sustain energy deep into an engagement and generate a large no-escape zone. JATM follows a different and largely classified American development path, making direct performance comparisons impossible from open sources. Its principal advantage for Australia is therefore not simply presumed range, but its integration into the broader U.S.-led air-combat ecosystem and its ability to enhance the RAAF’s capacity to conduct high-end coalition operations.
Super Hornet First, Then F-35A and Growler
Canberra has confirmed that the AIM-260 will first be integrated onto the RAAF’s F/A-18F Super Hornet fleet, before being fielded on the F-35A Lightning II and EA-18G Growler electronic attack aircraft. This sequence is operationally significant. The Super Hornet offers a mature, combat-proven platform with extensive commonality with U.S. Navy aviation, making it a logical first carrier for the new missile. Subsequent integration with the F-35A could be even more consequential, combining low observability, advanced sensor fusion and passive detection capabilities with a new long-range air-to-air weapon. Integration aboard the EA-18G Growler would add another layer to this architecture, potentially allowing Australian forces to combine electronic attack, electromagnetic-spectrum dominance and long-range kinetic effects against sophisticated airborne threats.
This capability will be particularly important for maintaining an edge in beyond-visual-range air combat, where the decisive factors increasingly extend beyond aircraft manoeuvrability. Modern air superiority depends on which force can detect, classify, network, target and engage an opponent first while denying the adversary the same opportunity. A longer-reaching air-to-air missile can reshape the geometry of an engagement by forcing hostile aircraft to react earlier, reducing their freedom of manoeuvre and allowing Australian fighters to defend wider volumes of airspace. It can also strengthen the protection of high-value airborne assets such as E-7A Wedgetail airborne early warning and control aircraft and KC-30A tankers, which are critical to sustaining RAAF combat operations across the vast distances of the Indo-Pacific. Combined with F-35 sensor fusion, Super Hornet weapons capacity and Growler electronic warfare capabilities, JATM can become a key kinetic component within a highly networked Australian air-combat system.
A Strategic Boost for Australia’s Indo-Pacific Airpower
The strategic implications extend well beyond the acquisition of a single missile type. Australia’s decision to field the AIM-260 directly reinforces the priorities set out in the 2026 National Defence Strategy and Integrated Investment Program, particularly the requirement to build a layered air and missile defence architecture capable of detecting, tracking and defeating increasingly sophisticated threats at greater distances. It also complements Canberra’s expanding investments in medium-range air defence, long-range strike, guided weapons and integrated targeting, creating a more cohesive system in which airborne and surface-based effects can operate as part of the same defensive network.
Geography is central to that logic. Australia must defend a vast northern approaches area and operate across an Indo-Pacific battlespace defined by extreme distances, dispersed bases, vulnerable logistics hubs and a growing proliferation of long-range aviation and missile systems. In that environment, a more capable BVR weapon allows the ADF to move part of its defensive perimeter outward, turning fighter aircraft into mobile extensions of the national air-defence architecture rather than relying solely on fixed or ground-based interceptors. That can force an adversary to commit supporting aircraft, tankers and command-and-control platforms from greater stand-off distances, complicate offensive air planning, and increase the cost and risk of generating sustained airpower against Australia, its northern approaches, deployed forces and critical maritime lines of communication.
First Foreign Operator Signals Exceptional U.S.-Australian Strategic Trust
Geopolitically, Australia becoming the first foreign operator of AIM-260 is an equally powerful signal. The JATM is a highly sensitive new U.S. air-combat weapon whose core performance characteristics remain protected, making Washington’s willingness to provide the capability to Canberra an important demonstration of strategic trust. It reinforces the increasing technological integration of the U.S. and Australian armed forces and will give their combat aviation communities a more closely aligned weapons architecture for multinational exercises, distributed operations and potential coalition missions. The announcement at Exercise Pitch Black is therefore particularly symbolic: the multinational exercise showcases precisely the type of interoperable airpower that Australia will require in a more contested regional environment.
