U.S. Army Special Forces Expand Small Drone Use for Faster Battlefield Reconnaissance.
U.S. Army Special Forces are expanding the tactical use of small unmanned aerial systems to give Green Berets faster reconnaissance and a clearer picture of threats before moving on an objective, a capability demonstrated during the inaugural Best Drone Team Competition in Alabama. Operating drones closer to the point of contact can shorten the sensor-to-decision cycle and reduce the exposure of troops conducting reconnaissance in complex terrain.
The competition at Fort McClellan and Clarke Range Complex tested U.S. Special Forces teams alongside elements of the 75th Ranger Regiment and 101st Division in realistic rural and urban scenarios. The results highlight how small drones are becoming an increasingly important tool for tactical surveillance, target detection, and rapid decision-making at the small-unit level.

From Aug. 24 to 28, 2026, the 1st Special Forces Command (Airborne) brought together 15 teams to assess how soldiers integrate Army small drones into tactical missions. The event focused not only on flight proficiency but on how operators used unmanned aircraft to solve tactical problems, support reconnaissance, adapt to changing conditions, and give commanders faster access to information.
For U.S. Special Forces, the operational value of small drones lies in their ability to extend battlefield reconnaissance without unnecessarily exposing soldiers. A Green Beret team can launch a drone from concealment to inspect roads, compounds, tree lines, buildings, defensive positions, or infiltration routes before moving into an area where it could be detected or engaged. This is particularly important for Special Forces detachments that often operate in small, dispersed formations and cannot always rely on larger intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance assets.
Organic drones give teams a faster way to confirm enemy movement, assess terrain, monitor an objective, or update the tactical picture immediately before an operation. In urban terrain, small quadcopters can look over rooftops, around buildings, and into streets that are difficult to observe from ground level; in rural environments, the same Army small drones can examine roads, wooded areas, ridgelines, landing zones, and approaches to an objective.
Imagery released by 1st Special Forces Command during the Alabama event showed operators using drones while remaining concealed, with information passed to collection elements positioned farther to the rear. This demonstrates how unmanned aircraft can separate the sensor from the soldier while still contributing to a wider intelligence picture. Chief Warrant Officer 4 Phil Schleicher, G3 Aviation/UAS and Robotics Operations Warrant Officer for the Special Operations Robotics Detachment of 1st Special Forces Command, said the event was intended to evaluate how teams applied unmanned systems in a tactical context rather than simply how well they could fly them.
That emphasis on judgment and adaptability reflects a broader shift toward making drone employment a routine battlefield skill. The war in Ukraine has already shown why this matters, with Ukrainian and Russian forces using small drones extensively for reconnaissance, target acquisition, artillery correction, and direct attack. The conflict has demonstrated how quickly a relatively inexpensive unmanned aircraft can identify a position, transmit information, and shorten the time between detection and engagement.
For U.S. Army Green Berets' drone warfare, however, the central challenge is not simply acquiring more unmanned aircraft. It is keeping those systems effective when an adversary is actively trying to jam, detect, deceive, or destroy them. Many small drones depend on radio-frequency command links, digital video feeds, and satellite navigation, all of which can be vulnerable to electronic warfare that disrupts control links, interferes with positioning, degrades video transmission, or helps locate the operator through electromagnetic emissions.
The Ukraine conflict has highlighted how rapidly this electronic contest evolves. Russian and Ukrainian forces continuously adjust frequencies, antennas, navigation methods, and control systems in response to new jamming techniques, while fiber-optic-controlled first-person-view drones have emerged as one way to reduce dependence on radio links in heavily contested environments. For U.S. Special Forces, the lesson is clear: a Green Beret team may gain a major advantage from an organic drone, but that advantage can disappear quickly if navigation or communications are disrupted.
The same issue would be central in any confrontation with a technologically advanced adversary such as China. U.S. Special Forces operating in the Indo-Pacific could use small drones for local reconnaissance, route monitoring, force protection, and objective surveillance, but they would also face sophisticated electronic warfare, signals intelligence, cyber capabilities, and layered air defenses. Drone proficiency must therefore extend beyond piloting to include emissions discipline, alternative navigation, communications loss, flight-profile adaptation, and the tactical risks created when a drone is detected or jammed.
Small unmanned aircraft can also contribute directly to force protection. Teams can use them to monitor approaches to temporary positions, inspect landing zones, investigate suspicious activity, or check terrain where sending a patrol would unnecessarily expose personnel. For a small Special Forces team, this can expand the amount of ground observed without increasing manpower, and the information collected can also be shared with rear collection elements, other units, or commanders coordinating a broader operation.
Integrating U.S. Special Forces drones at this level also creates logistical and technical requirements. Batteries, replacement parts, antennas, communications equipment, software, maintenance, and the ability to modify systems quickly can all become as important as the drone itself. This is another lesson reinforced by Ukraine, where drone technology and countermeasures often evolve faster than traditional military procurement cycles.
For 1st Special Forces Command, the inaugural Best Drone Team Competition therefore matters less as a contest than as evidence of a broader transformation. The event showed how U.S. Special Forces are treating small unmanned aircraft as organic battlefield reconnaissance tools that can support movement, force protection, situational awareness, and tactical decision-making.
For U.S. Army Green Berets, the main advantage is the ability to see farther without immediately exposing personnel and to obtain fresher information before committing to action, while the main vulnerability is equally clear: electronic warfare can rapidly reduce or eliminate that advantage. The future of Green Berets' drone warfare will therefore depend not only on how many drones Special Forces units field, but on how effectively they can combine battlefield reconnaissance, low-signature operations, technical adaptation, and electronic-warfare awareness against capable adversaries such as Russia and China.
