U.S. Army Green Berets Demonstrate Special Forces Arctic Operations Capability in Alaska.
U.S. Army Green Berets from the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) rapidly inserted personnel and all-terrain vehicles into Savoonga on Alaska’s St. Lawrence Island during Operation Polar Dagger 2026, demonstrating the ability to deploy and operate across the Arctic in support of homeland defense. The mission showed how U.S. special operations forces can quickly establish a mobile presence in remote terrain with limited infrastructure.
Using an Alaska Army National Guard CH-47 Chinook helicopter, the U.S. Special Forces moved troops and vehicles directly into the isolated Arctic location. The capability strengthens U.S. readiness to respond across Alaska’s vast northern approaches and reinforces the military’s ability to defend the homeland in increasingly contested Arctic conditions.

The insertion gave the U.S. Special Forces the mobility needed to operate from an isolated Arctic location where infrastructure and access are limited. It highlights growing U.S. emphasis on rapidly projecting small, flexible forces across Alaska’s remote terrain to strengthen surveillance, deterrence, and homeland defense in the Arctic.
The insertion took place on August 18, 2026, with SOCNORTH highlighting the mission on September 2. The deployment combined 10th SFG personnel with aviation support from the Alaska Army National Guard’s 207th Aviation Troop Command, demonstrating active and reserve-component interoperability for Arctic homeland defense. The most important capability shown at Savoonga was the delivery of Green Berets together with their ground mobility equipment, allowing the force to move beyond the helicopter landing site and operate across difficult terrain with greater independence.
That combination directly addresses one of the central operational problems facing U.S. forces in Alaska: distance. Western Alaska has limited road infrastructure, widely separated communities and operating areas that can lie hundreds of kilometers from major military installations, making conventional ground reinforcement difficult and increasing reliance on aviation. The CH-47 Chinook is well suited to this mission because its large cargo compartment and heavy-lift capacity allow it to carry troops, supplies and vehicles during the same sortie, enabling Special Forces to arrive with communications equipment, sustainment stores and tactical mobility rather than deploying as a lightly equipped infantry element.
St. Lawrence Island gives the demonstration particular strategic relevance. Located in the Bering Sea west of mainland Alaska, the island lies close to the maritime and air approaches connecting the North Pacific with the Arctic and occupies one of the most forward U.S. positions facing the Bering Strait region. Rapidly deployable Special Forces stationed temporarily in such locations could support reconnaissance, communications, infrastructure security, liaison with local authorities and the establishment of observation or operating positions during a developing homeland-defense contingency.
Green Berets are particularly suited to this distributed concept because Special Forces detachments are designed to operate in small teams with substantial autonomy. Their communications, reconnaissance and unconventional warfare expertise allows commanders to establish capable military elements in isolated areas without the logistical footprint required by larger conventional formations. Transporting all-terrain vehicles with the team further increases tactical mobility and cargo capacity, allowing personnel to disperse from the landing zone, carry mission equipment and cover a larger operating area after insertion.
Operation Polar Dagger 2026 was conducted from August 15 to 31 across several locations in Alaska, including Point Hope, St. Lawrence Island, Wales, Tin City and Little Diomede Island. U.S. Special Operations Command North has linked the exercise to improving Arctic readiness, Joint Force interoperability and the ability to deploy Special Operations Forces rapidly in support of U.S. Northern Command’s layered homeland defense. The geographic spread of these locations is itself operationally important because it tests whether U.S. forces can function across a dispersed Arctic battlespace rather than concentrating around established bases.
For U.S. Northern Command, that dispersion creates another layer between permanent military installations and the outer approaches to North America. Small teams inserted by rotary-wing aircraft can establish a temporary military presence where required and potentially support a wider network of aircraft, sensors, radar systems and conventional forces responding to activity approaching U.S. territory. The use of Alaska Army National Guard aviation also highlights the importance of locally based heavy-lift crews that understand the state’s demanding geography and can support active-duty forces operating far from major bases.
The broader significance of the Savoonga mission is therefore not the size of the force deployed, but the response model it demonstrated. A CH-47 carrying a Special Forces element and its ground mobility equipment can establish a small but capable military presence in strategically positioned Arctic terrain on relatively short notice, giving commanders more options between maintaining permanent forces at remote locations and responding only after a threat has developed.
As the Arctic and Bering Strait approaches gain greater military importance, the ability to deploy into austere locations becomes increasingly relevant to homeland defense. Polar Dagger 2026 demonstrated how Green Berets, heavy-lift helicopters and mobile ground equipment can be combined to extend U.S. operational reach across isolated terrain, improve early presence and situational awareness, and support the broader layered defense of the northern approaches to the United States.
