WDS 2026: Russia Upgrades Skat-350M Drone with Counter-FPV Defense System.


Kalashnikov Concern unveiled an upgraded Skat-350M reconnaissance UAV at World Defense Show 2026 in Riyadh, integrating a countermeasure system designed to defeat FPV interceptor drones. The move highlights how low-cost kamikaze drones are reshaping battlefield airspace and forcing tactical UAV developers to prioritize survivability alongside sensors and range.

Russia’s Kalashnikov Concern presented an updated configuration of its Skat-350M reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicle at the World Defense Show 2026 in Riyadh, confirming on February 8 that the platform now incorporates a dedicated countermeasure system against FPV interceptor drones. A company representative said the upgrade includes an expanded maneuver set and defensive architecture aimed at improving survivability against low altitude, high speed kamikaze threats that have proliferated in recent conflicts. The Skat-350M, previously positioned as a tactical ISR asset for brigade-level units, now reflects a broader shift in drone warfare where reconnaissance platforms must defend themselves against other unmanned systems operating in contested airspace.

The Skat-350M incorporates an onboard system that expands the range of evasive maneuvers available during flight to avoid interception. Company representatives state that internal data indicate the aircraft is able, in most cases, to disengage from FPV drone attacks by altering altitude, heading, and flight profile in real time. This adaptive maneuvering architecture is presented as a response to operational feedback from theaters where lightweight armed drones are widely used to target reconnaissance assets.

The UAV is also equipped with an optical navigation system enabling operations in areas where GPS and GLONASS signals are entirely unavailable. This capability relies on image-based terrain analysis and onboard reference comparison, reducing dependence on satellite positioning systems that are vulnerable to electronic warfare. In environments characterized by signal jamming and electronic interference, navigation continuity becomes a critical operational factor.

Cruise speed ranges from 72 to 120 kilometers per hour, and endurance is reported at up to four hours. The communication range varies between 70 and 100 kilometers, depending on configuration and electromagnetic conditions. The altitude of effective application is declared between 300 and 2,000 meters, although earlier information indicates the aircraft can operate at higher altitudes, including above 5,000 meters. Launch is conducted via an elastic or pneumatic catapult, while recovery relies on a parachute system.

The manufacturer further notes that the UAV can be fitted with a compressed air cylinder, enabling rapid preparation within five seconds, for up to twelve cycles. This feature is intended to shorten turnaround time between sorties, an operational consideration when sustained aerial coverage is required. The design emphasizes reliability and wear resistance to maintain operational availability under demanding field conditions.

The Skat-350M performs Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance missions in support of ground forces by delivering real-time observation for detection, identification, and target designation. Its four-hour endurance allows extended monitoring of designated sectors, while a communication radius of up to 100 kilometers supports employment at brigade or divisional level. The integration of an FPV drone countermeasure system alters the operational calculus. By varying flight paths and maintaining navigation capability in contested electromagnetic environments, the UAV seeks to preserve ISR continuity despite interception attempts. This reduces intelligence gaps and limits the need to deploy additional platforms to compensate for losses.

The presentation of this upgraded version at WDS 2026 reflects Kalashnikov’s effort to position the Skat-350M within the international tactical UAV market. Traditionally associated with small arms production, the company has progressively expanded into unmanned systems. The broader dissemination of UAVs equipped with advanced evasion and resilient navigation features contributes to ongoing changes in the balance between reconnaissance assets and interceptor drones. As such systems become more widespread, the competition between detection, interception, and counter-interception technologies is likely to intensify, influencing operational doctrines and the wider security environment.
