Exclusive report: UK supports Eurofighter Typhoon Fighter Jets delivery to Türkiye after Germany approval.

The United Kingdom has officially confirmed its full support for the export of Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets to Türkiye following Germany’s decision to approve the long-delayed deal. During a diplomatic visit to Ankara on June 30, 2025, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized that all four Eurofighter partner nations, including the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain, are now aligned in backing the sale. This marks a significant turning point in European-Turkish defense relations as the UK intensifies efforts to facilitate the delivery and deepen defense cooperation with Türkiye.

The Eurofighter Typhoon program, jointly managed by the four European nations, requires unanimous approval for third-country sales. Germany had previously blocked the agreement due to concerns related to Türkiye’s regional military activities and broader political issues. However, recent reports in German media, including from Handelsblatt, indicate that Berlin has reversed its position and is now prepared to authorize the export. This removes a long-standing diplomatic barrier that has stalled Türkiye’s efforts to modernize its air force since 2022.

Türkiye is aiming to acquire up to 40 Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft. The proposed package includes a combination of second-hand Tranche 1 jets from the United Kingdom and newly manufactured Tranche 4 variants. The Tranche 4 configuration integrates next-generation systems such as the CAPTOR-E AESA radar, advanced avionics, and upgraded electronic warfare suites. These fighters offer superior multirole capabilities, air superiority performance, and interoperability within NATO command structures. The acquisition would mark a critical milestone in Türkiye’s modernization strategy after its exclusion from the U.S. F-35 program.

BAE Systems, the leading British defense contractor and key industrial partner in the Eurofighter consortium, has reaffirmed its support for ongoing negotiations. A spokesperson for the company stated that BAE Systems is actively assisting the UK government in its discussions with Türkiye and emphasized the shared defense and security priorities between the two NATO members. The Eurofighter Typhoon, with its strong combat track record and future upgradeability, is seen as a strategic asset for enhancing Türkiye’s air defense architecture.

The Eurofighter Typhoon is a twin-engine multirole combat aircraft developed by the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain. Initially built for air dominance missions, the platform has evolved into a versatile aircraft capable of executing precision strikes, reconnaissance and electronic warfare operations. With a top speed exceeding Mach 2, the aircraft is equipped with a 27mm Mauser cannon, a wide variety of air-to-air and air-to-ground munitions, and advanced navigation and targeting systems. Ongoing upgrades ensure that the Typhoon remains competitive in high-threat environments, particularly through the modular enhancement path embedded in its Tranche 4 standard.

With the political alignment of all four Eurofighter partner nations now secured, the path is clear for Türkiye to proceed with the acquisition. This deal not only enhances Türkiye’s air force capabilities but also reinforces transatlantic defense ties and European industrial collaboration. It represents a pivotal moment for NATO defense diplomacy and underlines the growing strategic consensus on strengthening allied deterrence in a complex global security landscape.
