New Zealand has demonstrated a stronger maritime strike capability after a Royal New Zealand Navy SH-2G(I) Seasprite launched a Penguin anti-ship missile that destroyed the decommissioned USS Peleliu during RIMPAC 2026, as announced by the New Zealand Defence Force on July 23, 2026. The successful live-fire engagement highlights Wellington’s growing ability to contribute a credible airborne anti-ship capability to allied naval operations, strengthening deterrence and distributed maritime firepower across the Indo-Pacific.

The Penguin missile penetrated the target’s hull before detonating internally, validating its precision, terminal effectiveness and the RNZN’s ability to integrate helicopter-launched strike operations within a complex multinational force. Beyond the missile itself, the exercise demonstrated the readiness of New Zealand’s crews, logistics and command structure while underscoring the strategic value of networked maritime strike capabilities as regional navies prepare for increasingly contested Indo-Pacific operations.

On Thursday, July 23, 2026, the New Zealand Defence Force announced that a Royal New Zealand Navy SH-2G(I) Seasprite embarked on HMNZS Te Mana had successfully fired a Penguin anti-ship guided missile during RIMPAC 2026. The high-subsonic weapon struck the decommissioned U.S. Navy amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu in deep waters off Hawaii, penetrating the hull and detonating internally with enough force to compromise the vessel’s structural integrity. The firing was more than a dramatic SINKEX event: it demonstrated New Zealand’s ability to contribute an airborne maritime-strike element to a complex multinational force.

USS Peleliu offered a large and structurally realistic target for the combined strike sequence. The Tarawa-class amphibious assault ship displaced nearly 40,000 tons and had served for 35 years before its decommissioning in 2015. The U.S. Navy said the hulk was sunk in water approximately 15,000 feet deep, more than 50 nautical miles north of Kauai, after attacks by participating ships, aircraft and land-based forces. Its size allowed crews to assess penetration, internal blast effects and cumulative damage against a hull representative of a major naval platform. The result should still be interpreted carefully: a decommissioned vessel cannot manoeuvre, jam incoming weapons, deploy decoys or employ layered air defences, so the event validated launch procedures, guidance, terminal accuracy and destructive effect rather than the Penguin’s ability to penetrate the defences of an alert modern warship.

New Zealand’s Penguin Mk 2 Mod 7 is a compact, solid-rocket anti-ship missile with a range exceeding 34 kilometres, a high-subsonic flight profile and a 120-kilogram high-explosive warhead. The weapon is designed to skim close to the sea, strike near the waterline and use a delayed fuse to detonate after penetrating the target. That mechanism helps explain the effect reported aboard USS Peleliu: the missile transferred its explosive energy inside the ship instead of producing only an external blast. Such a strike could open flooding paths, damage machinery and weaken internal compartments. Its range also places operational demands on the launch aircraft. Against a defended surface combatant, the Seasprite would need low-altitude routing, disciplined emissions control, favourable geometry and support from wider surveillance assets to reduce its exposure before weapon release.



The SH-2G(I) transforms HMNZS Te Mana from a single firing platform into a dispersed ship-helicopter combat team. Operated by a pilot, warfare observer and helicopter loadmaster, the Seasprite can move beyond the frigate’s horizon, approach from a different bearing and force an opposing vessel to monitor more than one threat axis. HMNZS Te Mana contributes Sea Ceptor air-defence missiles, a 5-inch gun, Phalanx close-in defence and anti-submarine weapons, while the embarked aircraft extends surveillance and anti-surface reach. This arrangement reflects a central feature of modern naval warfare: sensors, command functions and weapons do not always need to reside on the same platform. The public announcements do not disclose which asset produced the targeting solution for the Penguin shot, however, so the event demonstrates coalition strike integration without proving a fully networked, externally cued engagement.

The RIMPAC launch also indicates that New Zealand is converting a rarely fired weapon into a repeatable operational capability. In March 2025, the NZDF disclosed what it described as the world’s first Penguin launch from an SH-2G(I) Seasprite, conducted from HMNZS Te Kaha. The 2026 firing placed the weapon inside a larger coalition strike sequence against a full-sized ship hulk. Generating that effect required more than a serviceable missile: specialist armourers had to prepare and load the weapon, aircrew had to conduct the engagement, and naval personnel had to integrate the aircraft with shipboard and multinational range procedures. These institutional skills are difficult to regenerate quickly. The deeper readiness signal lies in New Zealand’s ability to assemble the technicians, certified crews, logistics and command coordination needed to turn stored ordnance into a successful operational shot.

The firing also exposes a future force-design question. New Zealand is negotiating to acquire five MH-60R Seahawks to replace its eight Seasprites, with more than NZ$2 billion budgeted for the programme. The MH-60R would bring improved sensors, anti-submarine capability and closer interoperability with Australia and the United States. Yet the publicly listed New Zealand weapon package identifies Mk 54 torpedoes, AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, APKWS guided rockets and machine guns, without naming a dedicated standoff anti-ship missile comparable to Penguin. Unless another weapon is selected or the mission is reassigned, Wellington could gain a more advanced maritime helicopter while reducing the airborne anti-ship reach available to its frigates. The key procurement issue is not whether the MH-60R is more capable overall, but whether New Zealand intends to preserve a helicopter-launched ship-killing option at useful standoff distance.

The Penguin launch gains wider significance when assessed alongside the RNZAF P-8A Poseidon’s first Harpoon firings near Guam in June 2026. The NZDF said the P-8A launched two Australian-supplied AGM-84 missiles at a decommissioned target during Exercise Valiant Shield, demonstrating an ability to strike ships from at least 100 kilometres. Together, Harpoon and Penguin suggest the emergence of a layered New Zealand maritime-strike architecture: the P-8A supplies broad-area surveillance and longer-range attack, while the frigate-based helicopter offers a mobile firing axis within a naval task group. At RIMPAC, 30 nations, 30 surface ships, five submarines and more than 190 aircraft trained in the same operating environment. For a small navy, the strategic value is not mass but the ability to add a credible shooter to allied surveillance, command-and-control and targeting networks across the Indo-Pacific.

The successful Penguin strike on USS Peleliu signals a sharper phase in New Zealand’s defence posture. It demonstrates that HMNZS Te Mana, its embarked Seasprite and supporting personnel can generate a precise anti-ship effect inside a multinational operation, supporting Wellington’s stated drive for greater lethality, deterrent effect and integration with Australia and other partners. In an Indo-Pacific theatre shaped by vast distances, contested sea lanes and growing demand for distributed firepower, even a limited fleet can complicate an adversary’s planning when it contributes a reliable weapon from an unexpected axis. The decisive test now is whether New Zealand can convert occasional live-fire success into sustained missile stocks, resilient targeting networks and a future helicopter fleet that preserves meaningful anti-surface strike reach.
