MBDA Validates TESEO MK2/E Anti-Ship Missile to Advance Italy’s Next-Generation Naval Strike Power.


MBDA has successfully validated the TESEO MK2/E anti-ship missile in a new firing trial, the company announced on 16 September 2026, demonstrating the range and system design needed to give the Italian Navy a new long-range naval strike capability. The milestone brings the weapon closer to operational service and will extend Italy’s ability to engage maritime and land targets at stand-off distances across the Mediterranean.

TESEO MK2/E combines a range exceeding 350 km with sea-skimming flight, an AESA seeker, high-G terminal manoeuvres, and a two-way data link for in-flight target updates, reassignment, or mission abort. These capabilities turn the missile into a network-enabled strike weapon designed to connect distant sensors with surface combatants, increasing targeting flexibility and survivability in contested maritime operations.

On 16 September 2026, MBDA announced the successful validation firing of the new TESEO MK2/E anti-ship missile system, marking a decisive qualification milestone in the multi-year programme developed for the Italian Navy. During an approximately 20-minute piloted cruise flight, the weapon successfully demonstrated its range and validated the overall design of a system intended to become a new long-range strike layer for Italy’s surface fleet. The achievement moves TESEO MK2/E closer to production and planned first delivery in 2028, while strengthening Italy’s pathway toward a sovereign, network-enabled maritime strike capability. For the Italian Navy, and, more broadly, NATO’s maritime posture in the Mediterranean, the significance extends well beyond a successful missile firing.

From Validation to Production Readiness

The latest firing represents a substantial progression from the first TESEO MK2/E launch conducted in October 2024. That earlier test validated the design of the missile’s new elements and confirmed aerodynamic results obtained through wind-tunnel testing; the 2026 campaign has now demonstrated the missile’s range during a roughly 20-minute controlled cruise flight while validating the overall design of the new-generation system. Seen together, the two events show a programme progressing from validation of fundamental missile components and aerodynamics toward broader system-level maturity. MBDA states that this latest milestone paves the way for a swift conclusion of development and transition toward production, with first delivery targeted for 2028. The programme originated with the 2021 development, integration and qualification contract awarded by Italy’s National Directorate of Naval Armaments, followed by a production contract in 2025. The sequence demonstrates sustained alignment between MBDA and the Italian Navy in bringing an entirely new weapon architecture toward operational service.

TESEO MK2/E is significantly more than an incremental evolution of the internationally known TESEO/OTOMAT family. MBDA gives the missile an effective range exceeding 350 kilometres at sea-skimming level, combined with high-subsonic cruise speed and high-G terminal manoeuvrability. Its architecture incorporates a new AESA radio-frequency seeker, autonomous INS/GPS navigation, improved mission planning and shorter reaction times. Crucially, a two-way data link enables mission control throughout the engagement, including target updates, target reassignment and mission abort, while MBDA states that the weapon can prosecute both maritime and land targets. These features fundamentally broaden the operational significance of the system. At ranges beyond 350 kilometres, effective employment increasingly becomes a question not only of missile reach but of maintaining an accurate tactical picture across the engagement cycle. TESEO MK2/E can be assessed not simply as a longer-range anti-ship weapon, but as a network-enabled naval strike asset whose value increases when integrated into a wider sensor-to-shooter architecture.

That technological leap is being matched by an ambitious fleet-integration strategy. MBDA states that TESEO MK2/E has been developed in close cooperation with the Italian Navy for the PPA Multi-Purpose Combat Ships, new-generation DDX destroyers, FREMM-class frigates and Horizon-class destroyers, while future FREMM EVO frigates will also integrate the missile. Importantly, this roadmap is already visible in Italian fleet planning: in June 2026, the Italian Navy confirmed that its sixth PPA will be upgraded from Light Plus to the maximum Full combat configuration, including installation of the new TESEO Mk2/E subsystem for both sea and land attack roles; that vessel is scheduled for launch in 2028 and delivery in 2030. The parallel timing of other fleet programmes is equally noteworthy. The two FREMM EVO frigates currently under construction are scheduled for delivery in 2029 and 2030, and their upgraded combat architecture will include a cyber-resilient combat management system, advanced fixed-face dual-band radar, electronic warfare improvements and modern tactical data links. This creates a closely aligned modernization cycle in which MBDA’s next-generation missile is entering service alongside increasingly sophisticated Italian surface combatants.

A Distributed Strike Layer for Italy and NATO

For the Italian Navy, the resulting operational effect could be considerably greater than the addition of another anti-ship missile to its inventory. Deploying TESEO MK2/E across several classes of surface combatant creates the foundation for a distributed long-range maritime strike architecture rather than concentrating extended-range offensive capability aboard a small number of specialized vessels. Multiple PPA, FREMM, Horizon, FREMM EVO and eventually DDX platforms able to generate long-range effects would complicate an adversary’s maritime planning by increasing the number and geographical distribution of potential launch platforms. The missile’s stand-off range can also allow commanders to generate effects while keeping valuable surface combatants farther from hostile weapon envelopes, improving tactical flexibility and crew protection. Its secondary land-attack capability further expands the range of missions available to Italian commanders, linking anti-surface warfare with selected deep-strike tasks ashore. This does not mean that missile range alone produces sea control: long-range engagements remain dependent on surveillance, identification, targeting, command-and-control and resilient communications. But when connected to an effective multi-domain targeting network, TESEO MK2/E could substantially enlarge the maritime space over which an Italian naval task group can generate credible combat effects.

The wider significance is particularly evident in the context of NATO maritime deterrence in the Mediterranean and beyond. NATO’s Alliance Maritime Strategy identifies sea control, sea denial and power projection as core elements of maritime deterrence and defence, while emphasizing joint fires, deep precision strike, cross-domain command-and-control and the ability to project striking power from the sea. Within that framework, a fleet-wide Italian TESEO MK2/E capability is closely aligned with capabilities NATO has identified as increasingly important to its future maritime posture. The strategic contribution is therefore not simply another missile entering an Allied inventory, but the prospective multiplication of long-range strike-capable surface platforms on NATO’s southern maritime approaches. At the industrial level, the programme also underscores MBDA’s role in sustaining advanced European complex-weapons expertise and sovereign Italian capability. Renzo Tosini, MBDA Executive Vice President Sales & Business Development and Managing Director of MBDA Italia, described the successful firing as a result that will guarantee Italy and its Navy a “unique sovereign capability”, while highlighting the close synergy between MBDA and its customer. The validation campaign gives considerable substance to that assessment: TESEO MK2/E is moving from an ambitious national requirement toward a production-bound weapon capable of occupying an important position in MBDA’s wider anti-ship portfolio.

The successful TESEO MK2/E validation firing marks a major transition from advanced development toward future fleet capability, with MBDA and the Italian Navy having demonstrated the weapon’s range, validated its overall design and cleared another critical step toward production and first delivery in 2028. What makes the programme particularly consequential is the combination of extended reach, AESA seeker technology, networked in-flight control, dual maritime and land-attack capability and planned integration across PPA, FREMM, Horizon, FREMM EVO and future DDX combatants. Rather than representing a simple replacement for an earlier-generation anti-ship missile, TESEO MK2/E is emerging as a potential common long-range strike layer across much of Italy’s present and future surface fleet. For MBDA, the milestone reinforces its position in advanced European naval weapons and demonstrates the maturity of a system developed in close partnership with the Italian Navy; for Italy, it strengthens sovereign naval strike capacity; and for NATO, the gradual introduction of TESEO MK2/E has the potential to add greater reach, flexibility and distributed conventional striking power to Allied maritime forces operating across the strategically critical Mediterranean theatre.
