Spain's NTGS Alakran Mortar System Transforms 4x4 Vehicles into Powerful Mobile Artillery Platforms.

The Alakran mobile mortar system, developed by Spanish defense company NTGS, is redefining the concept of mobile artillery support. Designed to integrate seamlessly with various light wheeled vehicles, Alakran provides an unprecedented combination of mobility, firepower, and rapid deployment, making it an ideal solution for modern battlefield operations. During IDEX 2025, NTGS demonstrated that the Alakran system could be mounted on different types of 4x4 vehicles, including the American-made Flyer, a special forces vehicle, further showcasing its adaptability across various military platforms.

A key feature that sets the Alakran apart from conventional mortar carriers is its ground-based firing principle. Unlike other systems that require additional stabilization mechanisms to absorb recoil, the Alakran deploys its mortar directly onto the ground, ensuring a stable firing position while preserving the vehicle’s mobility. This unique approach reduces mechanical complexity, minimizes maintenance requirements, and allows for quick redeployment, making it highly effective in dynamic combat environments. The system includes an advanced auto-aiming mechanism, which drastically improves precision, allowing for faster engagement of targets without the need for manual adjustments.

The Alakran system is compatible with both 81mm and 120mm mortar barrels, offering flexible firepower options depending on mission requirements. The 120mm variant provides a maximum firing range of 8.2 kilometers, while the 81mm version reaches up to 6.5 kilometers. One of the most significant advantages of Alakran is its ability to execute rapid fire missions and relocate within approximately two minutes, a critical capability for evading enemy counter-battery fire. This "shoot and scoot" ability makes Alakran one of the most effective and survivable mortar systems available today.

One of the defining characteristics of the Alakran is its versatile vehicle integration. The system can be mounted on various light tactical vehicles, including the Toyota Land Cruiser J79, Jeep J8, Land Rover, and other 1.5-ton payload vehicles, without requiring structural reinforcements. This adaptability allows military forces to deploy artillery support in fast, lightweight, and highly maneuverable platforms, significantly improving reaction times in both urban and open-field operations. Unlike traditional self-propelled mortar carriers, which require heavy armored platforms, the Alakran enables low-profile, high-mobility fire support, making it an excellent choice for special operations forces, rapid reaction units, and asymmetric warfare scenarios.

From a tactical perspective, the Alakran system provides several advantages for modern military forces. Its lightweight design ensures that vehicles retain their natural mobility, allowing for stealthy insertions and quick extractions in hostile environments. The system’s modular nature allows it to be quickly deployed in conflict zones without requiring specialized infrastructure. Additionally, the electronic fire control and auto-aiming system enable operators to execute accurate indirect fire missions with minimal setup time, increasing overall battlefield effectiveness.

The Alakran’s combat-proven performance has been demonstrated in multiple regions, including Europe and the Middle East. Its robust construction ensures reliability in harsh environments, such as desert warfare conditions, where dust, extreme temperatures, and rugged terrain present operational challenges. The Ukrainian Armed Forces have successfully integrated the Alakran into their military operations, where it has shown exceptional combat effectiveness in active war zones. This global adoption highlights the system’s reliability and effectiveness in real-world military engagements.

NTGS has also expanded the production and integration of the Alakran system through strategic partnerships. One of the most notable collaborations is with Saudi Arabian defense conglomerate ERAF, which aims to localize the production of the system within the Kingdom. This partnership ensures that the Saudi Armed Forces benefit from locally manufactured, cutting-edge mobile mortar capabilities, while also supporting the growth of the country’s domestic defense industry.

In a modern battlefield where speed, flexibility, and adaptability are critical, the Alakran mobile mortar system provides a decisive advantage. Its combination of high mobility, rapid deployment, and precision targeting allows military forces to engage enemies quickly and effectively, while minimizing exposure to counterattacks. The simplicity of its operation, combined with its advanced auto-aiming technology, makes Alakran a market leader in light 120/81 mm mortar carriers.

As warfare continues to evolve, NTGS remains at the forefront of artillery innovation, ensuring that military forces worldwide have access to highly mobile, combat-ready fire support solutions. The Alakran system stands as a benchmark in mobile mortar technology, proving that modern artillery can be fast, lightweight, and deadly accurate, all while maintaining the essence of simplicity and battlefield availability.
