Ukraine has publicly revealed the British-made RapidRanger air-defense system mounted on a Spanish URO VAMTAC 4×4 and armed with LMM Martlet missiles, with the Aquila Regiment confirming its deployment on September 2, 2026. The combination gives Ukrainian forces a mobile short-range shield that can reposition quickly to counter Russian drones and other low-flying threats across dispersed battlefield positions.
RapidRanger combines 360-degree electro-optical surveillance, automatic target tracking and an engagement range of about seven kilometers, while detecting aerial targets at roughly 15 kilometers. Mounted on the VAMTAC, the lightweight system strengthens Ukraine’s layered air defense by adding a survivable and mobile interceptor for threats operating below the coverage or cost-effective engagement envelope of larger surface-to-air missile systems.

On September 2, 2026, Ukraine has publicly displayed the British-made RapidRanger short-range air-defense system in service with the 1030th Anti-Aircraft Missile and Artillery Regiment “Aquila” of the 3rd Army Corps, mounted on Spain’s URO VAMTAC tactical vehicle and armed with LMM Martlet missiles. The newly released photographs provide the clearest public confirmation yet of the system with an identified Ukrainian combat air-defense formation preparing the weapon for operational duty. The disclosure was made by the Aquila Regiment through its official social-media channels and subsequently reported by Euromaidan Press. Its importance lies not simply in the appearance of another Western weapon, but in the specific tactical gap RapidRanger is intended to close inside Ukraine’s increasingly layered and distributed defense against Russian drones and other low-flying aerial threats.
RapidRanger is a lightweight, highly automated mobile air-defense launcher developed by Thales UK as part of the company’s ForceSHIELD family. The launcher module weighs less than 500 kilograms and can be integrated onto different wheeled or tracked platforms; Ukraine has paired it with the Spanish URO VAMTAC 4×4 tactical vehicle, creating a highly mobile short-range air-defense platform capable of rapidly changing firing positions. The system incorporates daylight and thermal-imaging cameras, automatic target tracking and a 360-degree surveillance capability that can use passive infrared search-and-track or an integrated surveillance radar, depending on configuration. Thales specifications give RapidRanger a target-detection capability beyond 15 kilometers, an engagement range beyond seven kilometers and a reaction time of less than five seconds. The launcher carries four ready-to-fire weapons and can employ Starstreak or Lightweight Multirole Missiles, including mixed configurations depending on mission requirements.
The September photographs are significant because they should not be interpreted as the first evidence that RapidRanger exists in Ukraine. An earlier image was published in March 2026, while on April 21, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence publicly confirmed that RapidRanger systems were already being used against Russian Shahed attack drones. What is new is the visibility of the system inside a named operational formation: personnel of the 1030th “Aquila” Regiment are shown loading missiles before combat duty, offering direct evidence of the weapon’s integration into the 3rd Army Corps air-defense structure. RapidRanger also has an established international background. Malaysia selected the ForceSHIELD system, including RapidRanger vehicles, in 2015, while Portugal ordered a ForceSHIELD Compact configuration in 2024 incorporating RapidRanger vehicles, Starstreak and LMM missiles. Ukraine is now employing the concept in a far more intensive combat environment shaped by mass drone attacks, persistent reconnaissance UAV activity and repeated efforts to saturate air-defense networks.
The Ukrainian systems shown by the Aquila Regiment are equipped with LMM Martlet missiles, giving RapidRanger an important capability against small and low-signature aerial targets. The missile weighs approximately 13 kilograms, is around 1.3 meters long and is designed as a lightweight precision weapon suitable for several launch domains. In the RapidRanger configuration, the missile is supported by Thales’ laser beam-riding guidance architecture, while the launcher’s stabilized electro-optical sight provides daylight and thermal imagery together with automatic target tracking. For Ukraine, this is particularly relevant against UAVs whose thermal signatures can make engagement more difficult for some infrared-guided weapons. Ukraine’s Defence Ministry has specifically highlighted RapidRanger’s ability to engage Russian reconnaissance drones such as the Orlan-10 and has described the system as effective against Shahed-type attack drones.
RapidRanger’s principal advantage for Ukraine is layering rather than raw engagement range. The Aquila Regiment describes it as filling the space between mobile fire groups and heavier, less-mobile surface-to-air missile systems. Mounted on a VAMTAC, the launcher can accompany maneuver formations, relocate rapidly, reinforce threatened sectors and establish temporary air-defense ambush positions without the logistical footprint associated with heavier SAM batteries. Its electro-optical and potential passive infrared surveillance capabilities also reduce dependence on continuous radar emissions, allowing crews to observe portions of the low-altitude battlespace without constantly broadcasting the presence of an active radar. In operational terms, this can complicate an adversary’s attempt to locate air-defense assets electronically while giving Ukrainian commanders another layer for threats that do not justify expenditure of scarce medium- or long-range interceptors. RapidRanger is not a substitute for systems designed to defeat ballistic missiles, high-altitude aircraft or longer-range cruise-missile threats; its purpose is to make the lower layer of Ukraine’s air-defense architecture denser, more mobile and harder to circumvent.
The system does, however, have limitations that are central to understanding its battlefield role. Four ready-to-fire missiles provide relatively limited magazine depth, particularly during a concentrated drone raid involving numerous simultaneous targets. Laser-guided engagements also require the weapon system to maintain an effective tracking and guidance geometry until interception, making terrain, weather, line of sight and target maneuver relevant factors. This means RapidRanger is most effective when deployed as part of a wider network rather than as an isolated launcher. Connected to external surveillance and command-and-control assets, several dispersed launchers could receive target cues from sensors positioned elsewhere, shortening reaction time and allowing individual vehicles to remain concealed until an engagement becomes necessary. When combined with electronic warfare, anti-aircraft guns, interceptor drones, mobile fire groups and heavier SAM batteries, RapidRanger becomes part of a multi-layer defensive ecosystem in which different weapons are assigned to the targets they can defeat most efficiently. Thales itself markets the system as both network-enabled and capable of autonomous operation.
The appearance of RapidRanger with the 3rd Army Corps reflects a broader evolution in Ukraine’s air-defense doctrine. Russia has increasingly relied on combinations of one-way attack drones, reconnaissance UAVs and missiles to probe, saturate and exhaust Ukrainian defenses. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence reported that its air-defense forces faced record pressure during 2026, while the country simultaneously expanded the use of interceptor drones and other lower-cost counter-UAS systems. Within that environment, the challenge is no longer simply whether Ukraine possesses high-performance air-defense missiles; it is whether Kyiv can construct enough overlapping defensive layers to prevent inexpensive or expendable threats from consuming the missiles required for more dangerous targets. RapidRanger gives commanders an additional mobile engagement layer that can be repositioned around critical infrastructure, troop concentrations, logistics corridors and areas where terrain or radar geometry creates exploitable low-altitude gaps.
The geopolitical and industrial dimension is equally important. In March 2025, the United Kingdom announced a £1.6 billion program to provide Ukraine with more than 5,000 LMM missiles manufactured by Thales in Belfast, a contract designed to triple production capacity at the facility. The British government later accelerated deliveries from the program, demonstrating that the supply of lightweight air-defense missiles is evolving from emergency assistance toward sustained industrial production. The arrangement also followed an earlier British contract for 650 LMMs announced in September 2024. RapidRanger consequently illustrates an increasingly important model for European support to Ukraine: a British-designed launcher and missile, mounted on a Spanish tactical vehicle, integrated by Ukrainian forces and sustained through expanded European manufacturing capacity. The strategic effect extends beyond the individual launcher. Scaling missile production creates a replenishment pipeline that Ukraine requires to sustain a prolonged air-defense campaign while simultaneously expanding Europe’s own capacity to manufacture short-range interceptors.
The RapidRanger’s appearance with the 1030th “Aquila” Regiment marks another step in Ukraine’s transition toward a dense, mobile and increasingly networked short-range air-defense architecture. Its roughly seven-kilometer engagement envelope will not transform the air war by itself, nor can four missiles on a single launcher absorb a large-scale saturation attack. Its strategic value emerges when the system is deployed in numbers and connected with Ukraine’s broader sensor, command-and-control and interceptor network.
The combination of VAMTAC mobility, automatic target tracking, electro-optical surveillance and LMM Martlet missiles gives Ukrainian forces another means of contesting the low-altitude corridors used by Russian drones while preserving heavier interceptors for threats that only larger systems can defeat. At the military level, that complicates Russian mission planning and forces low-flying threats to confront a less predictable defensive network. At the geopolitical level, the system demonstrates how European platforms, missiles and industrial capacity are being integrated directly into Ukraine’s wartime force structure. RapidRanger is best understood not as a replacement for Ukraine’s existing air-defense systems, but as another piece of the increasingly difficult problem Russia must overcome: a dispersed air-defense network in which even the gaps between major SAM batteries are becoming defended.
