U.S. - Greenland - Denmark Security Deal Expands Arctic Defense as Russian Threats Grow.
The United States is preparing a new security agreement with Greenland and Denmark as the Arctic Region becomes increasingly important for missile warning, air defense, and submarine surveillance across the northern approaches to North America. The planned agreement could strengthen U.S. access and monitoring around Greenland, a strategically placed territory that supports early detection of threats moving through polar and North Atlantic routes.
The U.S. Pituffik Space Base already provides strategic missile warning from Greenland, while the island’s location gives NATO an important position for tracking Russian submarine activity moving from Arctic waters toward Atlantic reinforcement routes. Deeper cooperation could improve early warning, maritime surveillance, and the protection of transatlantic lines linking North America and Europe.

The United States, Denmark, and Greenland are expected to sign the agreement next week during the United Nations General Assembly, according to the Danish Prime Minister’s Office on September 18, 2026. The three governments describe the arrangement as strengthening security in the Arctic and North Atlantic, but the agreement itself has not yet been published, meaning no new U.S. basing rights, expanded military access, force-posture changes or additional weapon deployments can currently be confirmed.
The strongest existing U.S. military capability in Greenland is located at Pituffik Space Base in the northwest of the island. The U.S. Space Force’s 12th Space Warning Squadron operates the Upgraded Early Warning Radar there, providing warning and assessment data on intercontinental and sea-launched ballistic missiles threatening the United States and Canada. The squadron’s missions include missile warning, missile defense support, and space-domain awareness, making Pituffik an integral part of the sensor network protecting North America.
This gives Greenland missile defense significance that extends far beyond the number of U.S. personnel stationed on the island. Geography places Greenland beneath northern approaches toward North America, allowing sensors at Pituffik to monitor trajectories that could be used by long-range ballistic missiles. For U.S. defense planners, the value is early detection: identifying a launch, determining its trajectory, and passing warning information rapidly to NORAD and national command authorities before a threat reaches North American territory.
The maritime dimension is different but strategically connected. Russia maintains substantial naval forces in its northern regions, and submarines operating from bases associated with the Northern Fleet can move from Arctic waters toward the North Atlantic. In a major NATO confrontation, Russian attack submarines operating in the Atlantic could threaten warships, logistics vessels, and the maritime routes needed to transport U.S. and Canadian forces and equipment to Europe.
Greenland sits near the northern approaches to the Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom area, historically one of the most important maritime corridors between Arctic waters and the wider Atlantic. Effective surveillance of these approaches requires maritime patrol aircraft, submarines, surface combatants, acoustic sensors and intelligence systems working together to locate and maintain contact with submarines before they disperse across the open ocean. Greenland’s geographic position therefore gives it relevance to the wider anti-submarine surveillance architecture protecting the North Atlantic, even though the forthcoming agreement has not been disclosed as containing specific anti-submarine warfare provisions.
The island is also becoming increasingly relevant to combat-air operations. On September 10, 2026, F-35A Lightning II fighters from the Wisconsin Air National Guard’s 115th Fighter Wing operated from Pituffik during Operation Arctic Vanguard, demonstrating that the base can support advanced combat aircraft under demanding Arctic conditions. The deployment reinforced U.S. experience operating from a location characterized by long distances, severe weather, and limited alternative infrastructure.
These conditions make logistics and support capabilities central to any military expansion in Greenland. Fighter operations across the Arctic depend not only on aircraft but also on fuel, maintenance, secure communications, aerial refueling, airborne surveillance and search-and-rescue coverage. Airfields, storage facilities and communications infrastructure therefore have strategic value because they determine how rapidly forces can deploy and how long they can remain operational.
NATO Arctic defense is evolving around the same requirement for greater surveillance and readiness. Arctic Sentry is intended to bring national and NATO military activities into a broader operational framework and improve coordination with NORAD, U.S. Northern Command and U.S. European Command. The broader objective is to connect North American aerospace defense with the protection of NATO territory and the North Atlantic routes required to reinforce Europe.
Russia remains the most immediate military factor in this calculation. Its northern forces include strategic submarines, attack submarines and long-range aviation, while the Arctic gives Russian forces access toward both North America and the North Atlantic. This increases the importance of persistent radar coverage, airborne surveillance, anti-submarine warfare and long-range command-and-control systems across the High North.
China represents a longer-term consideration rather than an equivalent current military presence. NATO has cited Beijing’s growing interest in the Arctic and closer cooperation with Moscow when explaining the need to pay closer attention to the region. For Western defense planners, concerns include future access to infrastructure, information, and northern routes that could affect military mobility or intelligence collection.
The U.S. Greenland military agreement therefore arrives as the Arctic becomes more central to several connected defense missions. Pituffik Space Base provides strategic missile warning for North America, Greenland’s geography matters for monitoring Russian submarines moving toward the Atlantic, and the island can support air and surveillance operations across a region where infrastructure remains scarce.
The agreement could eventually change how the United States, Denmark and Greenland organize some of those missions, but its military impact cannot be determined until the text is released. What is clear is that the three governments intend to deepen security cooperation at a time when the Arctic is becoming increasingly important to U.S. homeland defense, North Atlantic surveillance, and NATO Arctic defense.
