Türkiye Moves to Send Ukraine 12 M270 MLRS Rocket Launchers and 2,524 Rockets as U.S. Reviews Transfer.


Türkiye is moving to transfer 12 U.S.-made M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) launchers and 2,524 M26 rockets to Ukraine, according to a U.S. State Department notice published in the Congressional Record on August 6, 2026. The proposed package would expand Ukraine’s tracked rocket-artillery force and provide a substantial stock of ammunition for sustained battlefield fire, but U.S. authorization is required before the American-origin systems can be delivered.

The package combines additional M270 launch capacity with more than 2,500 M26 rockets, increasing Ukraine’s ability to mass rocket fire while keeping launchers mobile and dispersed against Russian counter-battery threats. The Congressional Record states that the transfer can proceed after the notification period has elapsed, meaning the Turkish systems have been proposed for transfer but have not yet been confirmed as delivered.

U.S. authorization is required because the M270 MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System) is American-origin defense equipment, and its permanent reexport from Türkiye to Ukraine is subject to U.S. defense export controls and congressional notification procedures. The proposed transfer is particularly significant because 12 launchers would constitute a comparatively large single addition to Ukraine’s M270 inventory since European allies began supplying the system following Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

The scale becomes clearer when the M270 is compared with the U.S.-supplied M142 HIMARS. The tracked M270 carries two interchangeable ammunition pods, twice the pod capacity of the wheeled HIMARS, which carries one. With two standard six-round 227 mm rocket pods, each M270 can carry 12 ready-to-fire rockets. When configured in this way, the 12 Turkish launchers could collectively hold as many as 144 ready-to-fire 227 mm rockets before reloading.

This greater onboard ammunition capacity gives the M270 a different operational profile from HIMARS. While the lighter wheeled HIMARS provides high road mobility, the M270 combines twice the rocket-pod capacity with a tracked chassis designed for cross-country movement, making it particularly useful for supporting mechanized formations and operating from dispersed firing positions away from established roads.

Ukraine already operates M270-family launchers supplied by several European countries. The United Kingdom announced a total of six M270B1 launchers, initially committing three systems in June 2022 and subsequently three more. Germany supplied five MARS II launchers, its national version of the M270, while France contributed two LRU launchers, another modernized European derivative of the system. Norway also supported the effort by transferring M270 systems to the United Kingdom to enable further British deliveries to Ukraine, while Italy has provided M270-family equipment as part of its military assistance.

This multinational supply means that the Ukrainian Armed Forces already possess operational experience with the M270 family, as well as trained personnel and relevant maintenance expertise. Türkiye’s 12 launchers could therefore be integrated into an established rocket-artillery structure more rapidly than an entirely new weapon system, although the precise modernization standard and configuration of the Turkish vehicles have not been disclosed in the Congressional Record.

The M270 is a tracked multiple launch rocket system designed to deliver high-volume rocket and missile fire while retaining the mobility required to relocate after firing. Its tracked chassis provides strong cross-country mobility, which is particularly useful for accompanying mechanized formations and operating away from established roads.

For Ukraine, the operational advantage extends beyond the number of rockets that can be fired in a single mission. A larger M270 fleet would allow commanders to distribute launchers among more firing locations, rotate vehicles through maintenance and resupply, and retain additional launchers in reserve while maintaining combat availability.

This dispersion has become increasingly important as Russia combines reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicles, electronic intelligence, counter-battery sensors, and long-range strike weapons to locate Ukrainian artillery. Increasing the number of mobile launchers makes it more difficult for Russian forces to suppress Ukraine’s rocket-artillery capability by targeting a limited number of firing assets.

According to the August 6 Congressional Record, the proposed Turkish transfer also includes 2,524 M26 rockets for the M270. The M26 is an unguided 227 mm rocket equipped with dual-purpose improved conventional munition (DPICM) submunitions and was designed primarily to attack area targets, including concentrations of troops and equipment.

The M26 differs operationally from the precision-guided GMLRS ammunition commonly associated with Ukrainian M270 and HIMARS operations. Access to a substantial stock of unguided rockets could allow Ukraine to employ M270s against suitable area targets while preserving more advanced guided ammunition for command posts, logistics facilities, and other targets requiring greater accuracy.

The M270’s modular launcher architecture also gives the system broader operational potential because different members of the MLRS ammunition family can be employed depending on launcher configuration, ammunition availability, and authorization. This flexibility has made M270-family systems an important component of Ukraine’s Western-supplied long-range fire capability.

Türkiye’s proposed contribution would address launcher availability on a meaningful scale. Twelve additional M270s could reinforce existing Ukrainian rocket-artillery units, create additional firing elements, or provide a reserve pool to compensate for vehicles unavailable because of maintenance, repair, or combat damage.

The transfer would also mark a significant Turkish contribution to Ukraine’s land-based firepower. Ankara has maintained relations with both Kyiv and Moscow throughout the war, but releasing 12 heavy rocket launchers from Turkish inventories would provide Ukraine with a concrete increase in an already combat-proven long-range artillery capability.

If completed following the U.S. congressional notification process, the Turkish M270 MLRS transfer would strengthen Ukraine less by introducing a new capability than by adding depth to one it already employs. Combined with British M270B1s, German MARS IIs, French LRUs, and other M270-family equipment previously provided to Ukraine, the 12 Turkish launchers could increase firing capacity, improve operational rotation, and allow Ukrainian rocket-artillery units to remain more widely dispersed while still concentrating fire against Russian forces when required.
