France Accelerates the Short-Term Deliveries of Aster 30 Missiles to Ukraine.

France is accelerating Aster 30 interceptor deliveries and supplying additional radars to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses against Russian missile and drone attacks, with the latest reinforcement announced on September 22, 2026. The move is intended to expand Kyiv’s ability to detect and engage long-range threats while protecting critical infrastructure ahead of winter.

France and Italy had already agreed to deliver the planned Aster 30 missiles by October 2026 and authorized licensed production in Ukraine, while additional SAMP/T systems will provide high-end air and ballistic missile defense until new SAMP/T NG batteries arrive. The combination of 360-degree radar coverage and Aster interceptors will strengthen Ukraine’s layered defense against aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, and increasingly demanding ballistic threats.

France announced on September 22, 2026 that it was further strengthening Ukraine’s air defence through the signing of a contract covering the delivery of new radars and the provision of interceptor missiles. The move builds on earlier Franco-Ukrainian commitments covering SAMP/T NG air defence systems and Aster 30 missiles, as Kyiv seeks to reinforce the protection of its critical infrastructure ahead of winter.

To address Ukraine’s operational urgency, France and Italy had already decided in July to accelerate the delivery of the agreed number of Aster 30 missiles by October 2026, supporting the commitment made to Eurosam through the European Union’s Ukraine Support Loan (USL). Furthermore, France and Italy authorized the licensed production of Aster 30 missiles in Ukraine, with production intended to begin as soon as possible and before the end of 2026. Their relevance to Ukrainian air defence is growing as Russia expands its use of long-range drones and missiles against strategic targets, while Kyiv seeks additional systems to protect critical infrastructure, particularly the energy sector, before winter sets in.

The SAMP/T NG is a state-of-the-art theatre air and missile defence system designed to protect deployed forces and sensitive sites against a wide spectrum of airborne threats, including cruise missiles, manned and unmanned aircraft, and tactical ballistic missiles. The system introduces a new 360-degree AESA multifunction radar, using the Thales Ground Fire 300 in the French configuration and Leonardo’s Kronos Grand Mobile High Power radar in the Italian configuration. It is paired with the Aster family of interceptor missiles, including the next-generation Aster 30 B1NT. According to MBDA, the SAMP/T NG provides an engagement capability of up to 150 kilometres against aircraft, while significantly increasing the system’s anti-ballistic missile capabilities.

Ukraine’s urgent strategic situation amid the escalating air campaign has led the country to acquire a wide variety of air defence systems from multiple suppliers, ranging from Soviet-designed systems to Western platforms such as the U.S.-made Patriot. Accurate threat detection and long-range interception are growing in importance as Russia increasingly relies on long-range UAVs, including jet-powered variants, and cruise and ballistic missiles to strike Ukrainian targets from significant distances. To complement the limited number of high-end surface-to-air missile systems available, Kyiv has also invested heavily in developing and deploying shorter-range interceptor drones, which rely on interception geometry, target trajectory and positioning to destroy one-way attack UAVs.

Under the Franco-Ukrainian joint declaration signed on July 14, 2026, Ukraine announced its intention to order four Franco-Italian SAMP/T NG systems, with the associated financing to be requested under the 2026 and 2027 tranches of the Ukraine Support Loan. Five GM400 radars, one GF300 radar and one Kronos radar are also to be included in the USL product schedules. France committed to deliver the SAMP/T NG systems as soon as possible, including the progressive deployment of individual modules following delivery and qualification, starting in 2027. The GF300 radar is scheduled to be deployed in Ukraine before the end of 2026 as the first component of the future SAMP/T NG systems, while the five GM400 radars are due to be delivered before the end of 2027.

During the production period for the new systems, France has committed to deploy two SAMP/T complexes to Ukraine, which are to be returned once the newly procured SAMP/T NG systems are delivered. The temporary transfer represents an additional reinforcement of Ukraine’s high-end air defence capacity while the next-generation systems enter service. Combined with accelerated Franco-Italian deliveries of Aster 30 missiles and plans to establish licensed production of the interceptor in Ukraine, the SAMP/T family is set to assume a growing role in Ukraine’s layered air defence architecture.
