According to the Austrian Armed Forces (Bundesheer), the measures form part of the “Aufbauplan ÖBH 2032+”, with Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner attending the handover of the upgraded vehicles.

Leopard 2A4 Modernization Restores Critical Combat Capabilities

Austria began modernizing its armored vehicle fleet in 2023, with the Leopard 2A4 receiving upgrades aimed at addressing aging equipment and restoring important operational capabilities. The program includes the replacement of obsolete components and the restoration of the tank’s night-fighting capability, improving a key function required for operations under limited-visibility conditions. The Bundesheer also confirmed that the Leopard’s existing hydraulic turret system is being replaced by an electric drive, representing one of the most substantial technical modifications announced for the platform.

According to the Bundesheer, the vehicles will be transferred to the Heereslogistikzentrum, or Army Logistics Center, for a final adaptation before completing this stage of the modernization program.

Ulan Upgrade Renews Optics, Electronics and Running Gear

Austria is simultaneously carrying out a comprehensive modernization of its Ulan infantry fighting vehicle fleet. The work includes the renewal of optical systems and electronic components, refurbishment of the electrical installation, and replacement of parts of the running gear. These upgrades address several important vehicle subsystems while supporting the Bundesheer’s objective of maintaining the long-term operational capability of its mechanized formations.

The first modernized Ulan vehicles are being transferred directly to the troops, marking a tangible return of upgraded platforms to Austrian service. The Ulan is the combat vehicle of Austria’s Panzergrenadier forces and combines protected mobility with firepower while retaining the ability to operate alongside Leopard tanks in difficult terrain. Equipped with an onboard cannon, the vehicle also provides space for a group of grenadiers in addition to its crew, allowing armored and mechanized infantry elements to operate closely together.

Mechanized Forces Remain Central to Austria’s National Defense

The parallel modernization of the Leopard 2A4 and Ulan underscores the importance Austria assigns to mechanized forces in conventional military national defense. The Bundesheer identifies close cooperation between armored troops and Panzergrenadier units as central to combining mobility, protection and firepower on the battlefield.
