Breaking News: GDELS and KNDS Revolutionize Tracked Artillery with New NEMESIS 155mm Self-Propelled Howitzer.

At the International Defence and Security Exhibition (FEINDEF) 2025 in Madrid, Spain, General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS), in collaboration with KNDS, officially unveiled a groundbreaking evolution in modern artillery warfare: the NEMESIS. This newly introduced tracked self-propelled howitzer is built upon the robust and combat-proven ASCOD tracked armored veehiccle platform and incorporates the highly advanced, fully automated 155mm/L52 Artillery Gun Module (AGM) developed by KNDS. Representing the culmination of over 15 years of technological advancement since the original DONAR demonstrator, the NEMESIS marks a new chapter in the field of mobile, high-performance indirect fire systems.

The new NEMESIS artillery system is designed to meet the most demanding battlefield requirements by combining three essential capabilities: exceptional firepower, superior protection for the crew, and unmatched mobility in challenging terrain. The heart of this artillery system is the 155mm/L52 AGM, which delivers highly accurate and powerful fire support with ranges reaching up to 54 kilometers using standard ammunition, and up to 70 kilometers with extended-range projectiles. Furthermore, the system’s Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact (MRSI) capability enables it to deliver several shells on a target at the same time, significantly increasing its combat effectiveness and saturating enemy positions with minimal warning.

Automation is a cornerstone of the NEMESIS design. With its cutting-edge digital architecture, the system can be fully operated by just two crew members, a significant reduction from traditional self-propelled howitzers. The interior has been ergonomically designed not only to enhance crew comfort and operational efficiency but also to support the option of including a third crew member or enabling fully unmanned operation, depending on the mission profile. This high level of automation dramatically reduces the human workload and contributes to greater operational resilience, especially in high-risk scenarios.

At the core of the system's mobility is the ASCOD tracked armored chassis, which is widely used in various European armored vehicles, including Spain’s own “Pizarro” infantry fighting vehicles. The platform is powered by a powerful 1,100 hp diesel engine, granting it superior cross-country mobility and speed, even in the roughest environments. Users can choose between steel tracks for rugged conditions or composite rubber tracks for lower noise and reduced wear in urban operations. The vehicle’s chassis also supports 360-degree turret rotation and the ability to fire in any direction while on the move, ensuring rapid repositioning and immediate threat response — features vital for today’s “Shoot & Scoot” doctrines.

Developed entirely within Europe, NEMESIS is more than just an artillery platform; it is a strategic statement. In a geopolitical climate marked by renewed large-scale conflict and the urgent need for credible deterrence, the system reflects a push toward European defense industrial autonomy. It offers a clear alternative to older systems such as the American M109, which remains in service with several European armies, including that of Spain. By presenting a homegrown, next-generation solution, GDELS and KNDS contribute directly to the modernization of NATO-aligned armed forces and to reinforcing European capabilities for self-reliant defense.

The launch of the NEMESIS at FEINDEF 2025 underscores GDELS and KNDS’s enduring partnership and their shared commitment to innovation in military technology. It answers a growing demand for versatile, highly mobile, and deeply integrated artillery solutions capable of dominating tomorrow’s battlespaces. With its unveiling, NEMESIS sets a new benchmark for what a modern, combat-ready, and strategically relevant artillery system should be.
