United Kingdom’s First Extended Range Chinook Revealed in Boeing’s New Block II Configuration.
Britain’s first H-47 Extended Range Chinook has appeared on the production line, with Boeing UK releasing the first photographs of the aircraft from its Philadelphia factory on 21 July 2026, marking the United Kingdom’s entry as the first international operator of the Block II Chinook. The milestone signals a major increase in the Royal Air Force’s heavy-lift reach by combining greater endurance and air-to-air refuelling with a stronger, more modern airframe designed to move troops and equipment farther into contested or infrastructure-poor environments.
The aircraft shown is still undergoing factory integration, but its enlarged fuel sponsons and apparent air-to-air refuelling installation highlight the capabilities that distinguish it from existing RAF Chinooks. By pairing Block II structural upgrades with extended range and future growth potential, the H-47ER is set to strengthen Britain’s ability to conduct long-range special operations, contested logistics, rapid reinforcement and humanitarian missions across NATO’s most demanding theatres.

On 21 July 2026, Boeing UK released the first photographs of Britain’s initial H-47 Extended Range Chinook at its Philadelphia factory. The aircraft is the first of 14 ordered for the Royal Air Force and will make the United Kingdom the first international operator of a Block II Chinook. The images provide the clearest public indication yet of how the new platform will expand British heavy-lift reach beyond the capabilities of the existing fleet.
The photographs show a helicopter still undergoing factory integration rather than an aircraft in its final operational configuration. Its most visible features include a low-visibility black finish, enlarged fuselage-side fuel sponsons and an apparent nose-mounted installation associated with the H-47ER’s confirmed air-to-air refuelling capability. Red engine-intake plugs, temporary white masking or protective areas around the cockpit, open access points and ground-handling equipment reinforce that assessment. The black finish may reflect the aircraft’s specialist mission orientation, but it does not by itself confirm its eventual squadron assignment or complete operational fit.
The enlarged fuel installation distinguishes the H-47ER from the RAF’s standard-tank Mk6 and Mk6A aircraft, although extended-range Chinooks are not new to British service. The current Mk5 already carries the distinctive “fat-tank” configuration, which doubles its fuel load relative to a standard Chinook. Existing Mk5, Mk6 and Mk6A helicopters also have digital glass cockpits, Digital Automatic Flight Control Systems, electro-optical sensors and layered defensive aids. Their published specification, however, lists no air-to-air refuelling capability. The H-47ER’s step-change comes from combining greater endurance and airborne refuelling with a new-build Block II structural and avionics baseline.
Boeing’s Block II architecture introduces redesigned fuel tanks, a strengthened fuselage, an improved drivetrain and open avionics intended to increase lift, extend range and support future mission-system upgrades. It also incorporates the Common Avionics Architecture System cockpit and digital automatic flight controls, although the precise British software, communications and sensor configuration has not been publicly detailed. The UK government states that the H-47ER will exceed twice the range of a standard Chinook, reach approximately 300 kilometres per hour and carry up to 55 personnel or 10,000 kilograms of cargo.
The operational advantage is best understood as a wider payload-radius envelope, rather than simply a higher maximum-range figure. Helicopter mission radius changes with cargo weight, altitude, temperature, routing, low-level flight requirements and fuel reserves. Enlarged tanks and air-to-air refuelling should allow the H-47ER to move militarily useful loads across distances that could require an existing Chinook to reduce payload, establish an intermediate fuel point or operate from a more exposed forward base. Aerial refuelling could also reduce dependence on ground-based fuel infrastructure, although its practical value will rely on compatible tanker availability, qualified crews and coordinated mission planning.
Geostrategically, the additional reach could strengthen Britain’s ability to support NATO operations across the High North, the North Atlantic and other theatres where distance, severe weather and limited infrastructure constrain conventional rotary-wing aviation. H-47ERs could connect strategic airlift hubs, maritime platforms and dispersed land forces without depending on prepared runways. Their tandem-rotor configuration also preserves the Chinook’s established advantages in stability, rear-ramp access and the carriage of large internal or underslung loads. The same characteristics would support expeditionary operations in deserts, island chains and remote crisis zones, as well as humanitarian relief and national-resilience missions.
The programme will nevertheless create a capability-versus-capacity challenge. The Ministry of Defence expects the first H-47ER to be delivered and enter UK service from late 2027, while the oldest Mk6A aircraft are being retired as they become more difficult and costly to sustain. Their broader replacements under Chinook Capability Sustainment Programme Tranche 2 are not expected until the early 2030s, producing a temporary reduction in heavy vertical-lift capacity. Fourteen specialist aircraft will provide greater reach and mission flexibility, but a relatively small high-value fleet cannot automatically reproduce the sortie volume of a larger general-purpose force. The acquisition is also expected to generate approximately £151 million in additional UK investment, with British companies supplying components linked to avionics, electrical power and long-term support.
Boeing UK’s images mark the point at which the H-47ER has moved from procurement to a visible aircraft on the production line. Britain is not acquiring its first digitally equipped or extended-range Chinook; it is integrating those capabilities with airborne refuelling, a strengthened Block II airframe and greater system-growth potential. Once fully delivered and supported by the required tanker, training and sustainment infrastructure, the fleet could give the RAF one of Europe’s most capable long-range rotary-wing platforms for specialist operations, contested logistics and rapid reinforcement across demanding theatres.
