U.S. Marines Deploy F-35B Stealth Fighters to Japan as China Competition Reshapes Pacific Airpower.


The U.S. Marine Corps has deployed VMFA-533 with F-35B Lightning II stealth fighters from South Carolina to MCAS Iwakuni, Japan, as competition with China drives greater demand for forward fifth-generation airpower in the western Pacific. According to U.S. Department of War information released on September 5, 2026, the deployment strengthens the Marines’ ability to conduct stealth strike, air-defense, and expeditionary aviation missions across the Indo-Pacific.

Operating from Japan, the F-35B combines stealth, advanced sensors, and short takeoff and vertical landing capability with the flexibility to use dispersed bases and amphibious ships. This gives U.S. forces a more survivable combat aviation option closer to regional flashpoints while supporting distributed operations in contested air and missile environments.

VMFA-533 replaces VMFA-232 as MAG-12’s rotational fighter squadron at MCAS Iwakuni, restoring an F-35B-equipped unit to the deployment cycle after the previous rotation operated F/A-18C/D Hornets. The deployment is particularly relevant to a potential China contingency because U.S. Marines would have to operate inside a theater increasingly covered by Chinese long-range surveillance, ballistic and cruise missiles, advanced surface-to-air defenses, and fifth-generation J-20 fighters, making survivability and the ability to disperse combat aircraft as important as their individual weapons load.

VMFA-533, known as the “Hawks,” is based at MCAS Beaufort and transitioned from the F/A-18 Hornet to the F-35B as part of the wider modernization of U.S. Marine Corps tactical aviation. The squadron received its first F-35B in 2024, and its deployment from South Carolina demonstrates that the U.S. Marine Corps can now generate Indo-Pacific fifth-generation rotations from its East Coast force rather than relying primarily on permanently forward-based or West Coast units. This expands the pool of combat-ready squadrons available for Pacific operations and gives U.S. commanders greater flexibility to sustain a forward presence during prolonged periods of tension.

The F-35B brings a combination of low observability, advanced sensors, electronic warfare capabilities, and data fusion that substantially changes what MAG-12 can contribute from Japan. Its AN/APG-81 active electronically scanned array radar, Distributed Aperture System and Electro-Optical Targeting System allow the fighter to detect and classify threats while combining information into a common tactical picture that can be shared with other U.S. and allied forces. For the U.S. Marines, this means the F-35B can function not only as a strike fighter but as a forward sensor capable of supporting air defense, precision engagement and targeting for aircraft, ships and ground forces operating across a widely dispersed battlespace.

China's expanding airpower makes that role increasingly important. The People's Liberation Army Air Force has operationally fielded the J-20 stealth fighter and continues to improve the aircraft while expanding a combat aviation force increasingly equipped with modern fighters and long-range air-to-air missiles. The J-20 and F-35B are not direct equivalents: China's J-20 is heavily optimized for long-range air combat and penetrating air-superiority missions, while the F-35B combines stealth and sensor fusion with the ability to operate from amphibious assault ships and expeditionary sites. In a western Pacific confrontation, the competition would therefore extend beyond fighter-versus-fighter performance to which side can detect, distribute targeting information, survive missile attacks, and continue generating sorties after major air bases come under pressure.

That last requirement explains why the F-35B's short takeoff and vertical landing capability is especially significant in Japan. China's military has developed a large inventory of conventional precision-strike weapons and increasingly capable intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance networks designed to locate and attack U.S. and allied forces throughout the western Pacific. Concentrating fighters at a limited number of established air bases would give the People's Liberation Army a smaller target set; dispersing F-35Bs among naval vessels, expeditionary airfields and temporary operating locations forces Chinese planners to find, track and repeatedly retarget aircraft that can move between sites.

For U.S. Marines, STOVL capability therefore provides more than flexibility in runway requirements. It can become an element of force survivability. An F-35B squadron that can relocate from a major base to a shorter expeditionary strip or operate from an amphibious assault ship complicates the People's Liberation Army's targeting cycle and can reduce the operational effect of attacks against fixed runways. This directly supports the U.S. Marine Corps' Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations concept, under which relatively small and mobile forces are expected to disperse across the maritime environment, operate for limited periods, and reposition before an adversary can reliably locate and engage them.

MCAS Iwakuni remains strategically valuable despite the growing missile threat because it provides U.S. Marines with an established logistics and aviation hub from which they can train with the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, and Japan Self-Defense Force and prepare for distributed operations elsewhere in the region. Its position in Japan places VMFA-533 within the operational architecture around the East China Sea and the approaches to the first island chain, while allowing pilots and maintainers to gain practical experience with the distances, support requirements, and allied command relationships that would define a major western Pacific contingency.

From a broader defense perspective, VMFA-533's arrival should be viewed as part of a competition between China's ability to threaten established U.S. bases and Washington's effort to make its combat aviation force increasingly difficult to suppress. Recent U.S. assessments describe Chinese conventional strike capabilities and surveillance networks as increasingly able to challenge U.S. military operations far into the western Pacific. The answer is consequently not simply to deploy more fighters to a handful of large bases, but to combine fifth-generation aircraft with dispersal, hardened logistics, mobile refueling and rearming, allied facilities and naval aviation.

This is where the F-35B offers a distinctive contribution to Pacific airpower. While conventional fighters generally require longer runways and more predictable infrastructure, U.S. Marine Corps F-35Bs can potentially move between land- and sea-based operating locations while remaining connected to a larger joint sensor and command network. Each additional viable operating site expands the number of locations the People's Liberation Army must monitor and potentially strike, increasing demands on Chinese reconnaissance, targeting, and missile inventories and making it more difficult to achieve a rapid disabling attack against U.S. aviation.

The deployment also carries an important deterrence message for China. VMFA-533's arrival shows that the U.S. Marine Corps can reinforce Japan with a newly converted F-35B squadron drawn from South Carolina, demonstrating strategic depth beyond forces already stationed in the Pacific. In a crisis, rotating additional stealth fighters from continental U.S. bases would help replace losses, reinforce forward units, and sustain operations without relying exclusively on aircraft permanently assigned to the region.

For the U.S.-Japan alliance, a larger and more routine F-35 presence also increases opportunities to integrate fifth-generation air operations, particularly as Japan expands its own F-35 force and strengthens defenses across its southwestern islands. Interoperability in sensing, targeting, air defense, and distributed operations could become decisive in a confrontation where U.S. and Japanese forces must operate across hundreds of kilometers while facing simultaneous missile, air, and maritime threats.

The wider significance of VMFA-533's deployment is therefore not simply that another U.S. Marine Corps squadron has arrived at MCAS Iwakuni. It reflects an emerging U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy in which stealth fighters must remain combat-effective even when fixed bases are under sustained attack. Against China's combination of J-20 stealth fighters, long-range missiles, and expanding surveillance capabilities, the F-35B gives U.S. Marines an additional way to preserve airpower through mobility and dispersion, complicating People's Liberation Army targeting while maintaining the ability to deliver precision strikes and feed targeting information into the wider joint force.

As competition with China continues to reshape Pacific airpower, deployments such as VMFA-533's show the F-35 B's strategic value beyond its performance as an individual stealth fighter. Its combination of low observability, advanced sensing, and STOVL operations provides the U.S. Marine Corps with a combat aircraft specifically suited to a theater where major bases are increasingly vulnerable, operational distances are extreme, and the ability to move faster than an adversary's targeting cycle could determine whether U.S. airpower remains effective after the opening stages of a high-intensity conflict.
