French Navy receives first Falcon 2000 LXS Albatros maritime surveillance aircraft.


The French Directorate General of Armaments delivered the first two Falcon 2000 LXS Albatros maritime surveillance aircraft to the French Navy at Lann-Bihoué naval air base. These aircraft initiate the AVSIMAR fleet modernization program designed to replace aging Falcon 50M and Falcon 200 Guardian patrol aircraft. The units are currently undergoing military evaluations and crew qualifications prior to achieving initial operational capability.

The AVSIMAR program encompasses a total of 12 Falcon 2000 LXS Albatros aircraft equipped with Thales SearchMaster radars and Safran EuroFLIR 410 sensors to succeed legacy maritime patrol fleets. Deliveries continue at a baseline cadence of two units per year following initial handovers completed in July 2026.

On September 8, 2026, the French defense procurement agency (DGA) announced the delivery of the first two Falcon 2000 LXS Albatros maritime surveillance aircraft to the French Navy on July 27 and 31, 2026, beginning the replacement of eight Falcon 50Ms and five Falcon 200 Guardians with 12 aircraft under the AVSIMAR program. The two Albatros joined Flottille 24F at Lann-Bihoué, where the CEPA/10S is conducting military experimentation and crew conversion ahead of initial operational capability. Seven aircraft were ordered in December 2020; the first Albatros flew on January 24, 2025; five more units were ordered on September 26, 2025; and the third Albatros is due by the end of 2026, followed by two annually through 2031. The Albatros fleet will be 7.7% smaller than the Falcon 50M/Falcon 200 Guardian force it replaces, despite retaining requirements in Brittany, Tahiti and New Caledonia.

Its equipment includes the SearchMaster X-band AESA radar, a EuroFLIR 410, a Naval Group mission system, Link 22, SATCOM, radio direction finding, SAR equipment and anti-jamming navigation. Phase 1 covers 100% of intervention missions but only part of surveillance, as drones are planned under Phase 2 for the remaining surveillance requirement. The July deliveries do not equate to two immediately operational aircraft because the two Albatros are used for evaluation, procedures development, and crew qualification. After testing at Istres, both maritime patrol aircraft moved to Lann-Bihoué, where CEPA/10S began the military evaluation needed before operational declaration. With aircraft No. 3 due in late 2026, the fleet should rise to three aircraft, then five in 2027, seven in 2028, nine in 2029, 11 in 2030 and 12 in 2031 at the planned cadence.

Five aircraft in 2027 would equal the full Falcon 200 Guardian fleet, and seven in 2028 would equal 58.3% of the complete Albatros fleet, requiring Falcon 50M and Guardian operations to overlap with the Albatros introduction. As withdrawals already began in 2025, four Falcon 50Ms are expected to remain available through 2030, so the older fleet remains necessary during the transition. Each crew conversion, maintenance qualification and overseas redistribution therefore have to progress alongside deliveries and retirements until the two phases are complete. The Falcon 2000 LXS is 20.23 m long with a 21.38 m wingspan, a maximum takeoff weight of 19,414 kg and a fuel capacity of 7,557 kg. Powered by two PW308C turbofan engines producing 31.14 kN each, the Albatros reaches a speed of Mach 0.85 to 0.862, an altitude of 47,001 ft, a baseline range of 4,000 nmi (7,408 km), and up to eight hours of endurance per AVISMAR requirements.

Takeoff requires 1,425 m and landing 689 m, while a maritime Falcon 2000 configuration can patrol for seven hours at 200 nmi (370 km) from the coast. Against the Falcon 50M's mission range of 2,700 nmi, the Albatros can cover a further 1,300 nmi, or 48.1%; against the Guardian's 2,000 nmi range, it is double. Eight hours of endurance is also 23.1% above the Falcon 50M's 6 hours 30 minutes and 45.5% above the Guardian's 5 hours 30 minutes. The DGA nevertheless measures the operational improvement more conservatively at a 10 to 30% increase in mission radius, by accounting for transit, patrol time, return flight, and fuel reserves rather than maximum point-to-point range. The Albatros replaces the Falcon 50M's Ocean Master 100 radar architecture with the Thales SearchMaster, an X-band AESA radar installed under the fuselage, while Safran's EuroFLIR 410 handles day/night electro-optical identification.

The EuroFLIR 410 itself is not new to the 24F unit because Falcon 50Ms began receiving the sensor in 2024; the larger change is its integration with the SearchMaster and a new Naval Group mission system, allowing radar contacts, optical imagery, navigation data, and other tactical information to be handled within a common operator environment. Link 22, SATCOM, and a radio direction finder permit tactical data exchange, beyond-line-of-sight communications, and emitter location, while anti-jamming GNSS equipment addresses the growing problem of SATNAV interference during operations. The detection chain therefore progresses from wide-area SearchMaster surveillance to EO/IR or visual identification through the aircraft's observation windows, followed by fusion and transmission of contact information.

The result is therefore not merely a stronger radar installation, but a detection-to-identification-to-distribution chain in which the SearchMaster finds contacts, the EuroFLIR 410 and observers refine this identification, and the mission system, Link 22 and SATCOM transmit the information to surface forces or command structures. The AVSIMAR program also retained intervention capabilities rather than limiting the aircraft to detecting maritime contacts. The Albatros carries a distress-beacon detector, a system for releasing survival equipment or a life raft, and smoke markers for marking survivors or incident positions. With a crew of five, the Falcon 50M already provides this type of intervention capability through a floor hatch capable of releasing eight SAR/SECMAR survival containers. For its part, the Falcon 200 Guardian uses six personnel and routinely carries at least two SAR chains, with the flight mechanic responsible for release through a floor hatch.

The Albatros therefore retains the sequence of detection, identification, communications, position marking and delivery of survival equipment while increasing range and endurance. Missions remain subsequently centered on SAR, EEZ and fisheries surveillance, maritime traffic, counter-trafficking, pollution monitoring, maritime approaches and disaster response. Fleet geography is the main constraint on the reduction from 13 to 12 aircraft. Eight Falcon 50M have operated from Lann-Bihoué, while five Falcon 200 Guardians support Pacific requirements from Tahiti and New Caledonia, forcing France to divide its maritime surveillance aircraft across three widely separated locations.

The Guardian's limitations are particularly important in the Pacific: the aircraft has a range of 2,000 nmi, an endurance of 5 hours 30 minutes, a ceiling of 42,000 ft, a maximum weight of 15,200 kg and a crew of six, while its radar can detect large ships at 120 to 140 nmi (roughly 220 to 260 km). The Falcon 50M improves on that with 2,700 nmi of range, a 1,300 nmi mission radius, 6 hours 30 minutes of endurance, 370 knots mission speed and a 45,000 ft ceiling. The Albatros raises the baseline range to 4,000 nmi and endurance to eight hours, but additional range cannot substitute for simultaneous aircraft presence in Brittany and the Pacific.

If one Albatros is committed to each of Lann-Bihoué, Tahiti and New Caledonia, 25% of the eventual 12-aircraft inventory is already geographically committed even before maintenance, training and additional concurrent missions are counted. Fleet effectiveness will therefore depend on serviceable aircraft generated at each location rather than the procurement total alone. The delivery rate makes this geographic problem most restrictive before 2030. Dassault converts the Falcon 2000 LXS at Mérignac; flight testing has involved Istres, while Thales supplies SearchMaster, Safran EuroFLIR 410 and Naval Group the mission system.

At two deliveries annually after 2026, the inventory reaches only seven aircraft by the end of 2028 and nine by the end of 2029, compared with 13 legacy aircraft at the beginning of the transition. Even seven Albatros equal only 53.8% of the former 13-aircraft inventory numerically, although each provides greater radius and endurance. Eleven should be available by the end of 2030, before the twelfth completes the fleet in 2031. In parallel, Dassault is expanding the Falcon 2000 industrial base to India through its June 2025 partnership with Reliance Infrastructure, with Falcon 2000 fuselage production and final assembly planned in Nagpur and the first Indian-built aircraft targeted for 2028.
