Description
The Ancillary Surface Craft is a medium shallow-draft roll-on/roll-off amphibious logistics and littoral maneuver craft intended to bridge the capability gap between conventional landing craft and larger amphibious transport vessels. Unlike traditional ship-to-shore connectors that are normally dependent on a larger amphibious warfare ship, the ASC is designed to operate more independently between islands, coastal staging points, expeditionary bases, and unimproved landing areas. Its mission profile emphasizes direct shore-to-shore movement, allowing Marine units to reposition personnel and equipment without requiring permanent harbor facilities or deep-water access.
The program is a United States Marine Corps initiative, with the prototype craft developed by Birdon America Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of the Australian-founded Birdon Group. Construction has involved C&C Marine and Repair Inc. in Belle Chasse, Louisiana. The design therefore combines Birdon's experience in military landing craft and shallow-water vessels with U.S. construction and Marine Corps-specific operational requirements. The craft was developed principally for the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory as an experimental platform intended to validate new concepts of distributed maritime mobility and tactical logistics.
Development of the ASC is closely connected to the Marine Corps' Force Design transformation and the implementation of Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations. Marine Stand-in Forces operating within contested maritime regions require the ability to distribute personnel, sensors, missile systems, fuel, ammunition, communications equipment, and other supplies across numerous small coastal sites. Large amphibious ships and conventional logistics vessels cannot safely approach many of these locations because of shallow water, reefs, poor hydrographic surveys, or lack of port infrastructure. The ASC was therefore conceived as a craft capable of combining comparatively long-range maritime movement with direct access to shallow and unimproved shorelines.
Birdon America received the development effort during 2024, with construction of two prototype ASC-M craft progressing through 2025 and 2026. The initial program was designed primarily for technical assessment and experimentation rather than immediate mass production. Birdon has publicly indicated that a much larger future requirement could eventually emerge if the concept proves successful, although potential fleet quantities should not be interpreted as firm production orders. The two initial vessels are intended to provide the Marine Corps with enough hardware to evaluate not only individual craft performance but also distributed operations involving more than one ASC.
The first prototype, generally identified as ASC 1, achieved Marine Corps technical acceptance in August 2026. This milestone allowed the vessel to progress into Limited Technical Assessments and operational experimentation but did not represent full fleet entry into service. The prototype phase is being used to evaluate crewing, maintenance, navigation, cargo handling, beaching procedures, tactical employment, logistics support, and the practical integration of the craft into Marine and naval formations. Findings from these evaluations are expected to influence the configuration of any future production version.
The principal roles of the ASC are distributed littoral logistics, tactical maneuver, inter-island transport, expeditionary resupply, and direct delivery to austere landing sites. The craft can be used to move Marine personnel, tactical vehicles, fuel, ammunition, engineering equipment, communications systems, palletized supplies, and other mission loads between coastal positions. In an Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations environment, it could support missile detachments, sensing units, aviation support elements, logistics teams, and mobile command posts that require frequent repositioning. The ASC is intended to complement larger vessels such as the Landing Ship Medium, with the larger ship providing greater strategic and operational lift while the ASC performs the final movement into restricted and shallow coastal areas.
