Description
In 2008 at MSPO, the International Defence Industry Exhibition in Poland, the Polish Company Huta Stalowa Wola (HSW) has presented a new project of 120mm automatic mortar turret. The aim of this project was to create a mortar weapon system which can be integrated to a wheeled or tracked chassis. In 2012, HSW unveiled a new vehicle at MSPO 2012 with its 120 mm mortar turret mounted to a new tracked chassis, designed and manufactured by the Polish Company HSW. This new vehicle represents the state-of-the-art of 120mm self-propelled mortar carrier on tracked armoured chassis vehicle. The HSW 120mm self-propelled mortar carrier tracked vehicle was developed to meet the potential requirements of the Polish Army as well as for export markets. The vehicle can operate completely autonomously or integrated into an artillery control network with possibility of remotely firing. As the system is turret mounted it will be capable of carrying out direct and indirect fire missions with maximum range of 8 - 12 km depending on the projectile/propellant combination. The HSW 120 mm automatic systems allow it to be ready for action within approx. 120 seconds of coming to a halt and out of action in less than 15 seconds. The HSW 120 mm mortar turret can be also mounted on wheeled chassis as well as onto vessels (turret’s stabilized naval version).

Variants
- HSW 120mm on wheeled chassis: the 120mm mortar turret is mounted on a 8x8 wheeled chassis of Polish Rosomak armoured infantry fighting vehicle.

Armament
Main armament of the turret is a 120mm mm breech loaded mortar system including an automatic loading system. To improve the accuracy, the 120mm mortar is laid onto the target using a computerized fire-control system WB Electronics. The 120 mm mortar, with a barrel length of 3,000 mm has an elevation from -3 to +80º with turret traverse of 360°. The rotation and lift mechanisms is electrically controlled but can be controlled manually in case of emergency or failure. In direct fire the 120mm mortar has a minimum firing range of 500m and a maximum range of 8,000 to 12,000 m (with extended range ammunition) when being used in the indirect fire role. A total of 40 120 mm mortar projectiles and their associated charges is carried and the automatic loading system enables a rate of fire of 7 to 10 rds/min to be achieved. The vehicle can carries 20 additional ammunitions which are stored in the crew compartment. New ammunition is loaded into the HSW 120 via two small doors in the rear part of the turret. Secondary armament includes a 7.62 mm caliber machine gun UKM 2000 D with Bazalt day/night sight mounted to the hatch commander top of the turret. Four 81mm smoke grenade launchers are mounted to each side of the main armament front of the turret.
Design and protection
The turret and the hull of the HSW 120mm self-propelled mortar carrier are of all-welded steel armour which provides a protection against small arms firing 7.62mm caliber, 155mm artillery shell splinters and hand grenades, unexploded artillery fragmenting sub-munitions, and other small anti-personnel explosive devices detonated under the vehicle (Level 1 STANAG 4569). The driver is seated at the front left side of the hull with the engine compartment to his front and the turret mounted at the rear of the chassis. The HSW 120 mm is operated by a crew of five people, driver, commander and 3 operators. A large door is fitted at the rear of the hull to allow the crew to enter and exit the vehicle.
Propulsion
The HSW 120mm self-propelled mortar carrier tracked armoured is motorized with an MTU 6V199 TE20 engine 260 kW. The suspension either side consists of seven roadwheels with the drive sprocket at the front and the idler at the rear. There are no track-return rollers as the top of the track rests on the top of the roadwheels. The vehicle can run at a maximum road speed of 60 km/h with a maximum road range of 500 km. The HSW 120mm mortar carrier is able to negotiate gradient obstacle up to 60%, side slopes to 30%, vertical obstacle of 0.4 m and trenches of maximum 2,000mm. The vehicle can cross water obstacles of a maximum depth of 1.2 m.
Accessories
The HSW 120mm self-propelled mortar carrier tracked armoured is equipped with a ballistic computer, an inertial navigation system TALIN 5000 (GPS signal, odometer), integrated communication digital radio station RRC 9311 AP with FONET communication management system, battlefield management system with tactical situation on a digital map for the commander and automatic co-operation with external command and fire control systems of C4I class, ballistic computer, laser warning OBRA and WB Electronics computerized fire-control system. The aiming system includes optoelectronic direct fire sight with thermal imaging camera and laser range finder which has a range of between 50 and 10,000 m. The vehicle is also equipped with an NBC contamination detection and diagnostic system TAFIOS B.
