Rocket, missile and tube artillery units of the Russian Southern Military District’s 58th All-Arms Army based in the North Caucasus have started learning to operate the advanced Aistyonok man-portable radar, the district’s press office said. The Aistyonok is a portable radar system intelligence and control fire (counter-battery radar). Designed for intelligence-monitoring of positions of fire weapons (artillery and mortar positions, launchers, tactical missiles and air defense systems, etc.), Calculating the trajectories of shells and rockets, surveillance of airspace and control of unmanned aerial vehicles.

The Aistyonok portable radar was deployed by the Russian armed forces in Syria and was also delivered to the Syrian army.

"The system can calculate the trajectory of 81-120mm mortar bombs and their firing and impact points. The system can be also used to adjust the fire of 122-152mm guns. Operating in this mode, the radar registers shell bursts and locates hostile artillery units," the press office said.

"The system can detect moving ground targets at a distance of up to 20 kilometers [12.4 miles], which allows preemptive strikes against the enemy," the press office added.

According to the press office, information on the radar’s operating modes, marks, the trajectory of acquired targets, etc., is shown on the control console’s color display.

The system includes a radio station to transmit data on targets. The Aistyonok man-portable system has modular design. It can be also carried by any vehicle. The system weighs 135 kilograms.
