Description
At AAD 2012 Africa Aerospace & Defence Exhibition, the South African Company BAE Systems Land Systems has launched a new variant of its family of RG35 wheeled armoured vehicle, the RG35 multi-purpose blast protected fighting vehicle. The range of RG35 was developed based with the technology of RG31. The RG35 incorporates 30 years of BAE Systems defence technologies experience in tactical mobility and protection. The RG35 is a new technology in the design of wheeled armoured personnel carrier with the engine components moved to the side of the vehicle to have a single section within the vehicle and provide an internal volume of 12m3. The RG35 family of vehicles can be deployed in many different roles and offers a choice of variants and configurations while maintaining 80 percent vehicle commonality. RG35 combines the high levels of survivability of the RG31 Mine Protected Vehicle with the tactical capability of an infantry fighting vehicle. The RG35 is initially developed to be a crossover with APC and combat armoured fighting vehicle and cover the gap between this two type of military vehicles. With the RG35 6x6 BAE Systems offers a new solution of armoured which can be used as APC and infantry combat vehicle. The new RG35 6x6 can be easily adapted for a wide range of missions as ambulance, command and control, recovery and engineer. Several countries in the Middle East have shown an interest for the RG35 of BAE Systems.

Variants
- RG35 4x4: 4x4 suspension. The vehicle can be used as light armoured personnel carrier for patrol, border control and reconnaissance missions.
- RG35 6x6: standard version of the RG35 6x6 family without add-on armour.

Armament
A full range of weapons stations and remotely operated weapon systems can be mounted on the roof of the RG35 6x6 multi-purpose blast protected fighting vehicle armed with 7.62 mm or 12.7mm or cannon up to 30mm caliber. At AAD 2012, the vehicle was equipped with the BAE Systems TRT-B25 remote weapon station armed with an ATK 25mm M242 Bushmaster cannon with two 130-round bins. A co-axial 7.62 mm machine gun with 1,000 rounds is fitted on the right side of the main armament for close fire support. The gunner is protected while controlling the system remotely from inside the vehicle. Depending on the weapon and selected sight, the TRT-B25 is effective beyond 2,000 m and will allow day and night observation, as well as engagement on the move.
Design & Protection
The RG35 6x6 multi-purpose blast protected fighting vehicle has an 8.5 ton payload, a 12 cubic meters volume under armour, can seat up to 15 crew members (including driver and commander), and carry light and medium remote controlled weapon stations. The driver and the commander are sitting at the front of the vehicle on the centre and have a large bulletproof window at the front and one smaller to each side; a single-piece hatch which opens to the rear is mounted on the roof. The troop compartment is at the rear of the vehicle with two small bulletproof windows to each side. The soldiers enter and leave the vehicle via a single large rear door, which opens to the right; a small bulletproof window is fitted on the upper part. Each side of the vehicle provides a protection against IEDs. The RG35 6x6 provides a ballistic protection up to STANAG 4569 A Level 4 (14.5x114AP / B32 at 200 meters with 911 m/s, artillery shell splinters 155 mm High Explosive at 30 m) and mine protection up to STANAG 4569 B Level 4A/4B (10 kg explosive 4a: Mine Explosion pressure activated under any wheel or track location and 4b: Mine Explosion under center.)
Mobility
The RG35 6x6 multi-purpose blast protected fighting vehicle is motorized with a Cummin ISL Diesel engine developing 450 hp (336kW) coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission ZF HP602 and a BAE Systems gear ratio two-speed transfer case. The vehicle uses an independent hydro-pneumatic suspension and a side mounted powerpack that can be replaced in less than one hour. The RG35 can reach a maximum road speed of 105 km/h.
Accessories
Standard equipment of the RG35 6x6 multi-purpose blast protected fighting vehicle includes a system for adjusting the ground clearance to suit the terrain conditions, air-conditioning, onboard electric diagnostics system and tyres run-flat system. A spare wheel is mounted on the right side of the hull. A self-recovery winch is mounted at the front of the hull. In option, the vehicle can be equipped with fire detection and suppression system for the engine and crew compartments, a battery monitoring/power management system, a health usage and monitoring system and an integrated starter generator.
