Description
In 1996, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps unveils the project of a new upgrade version of Russian made main battle tank T-54/T-55 under the local name of the Safir-74. Many T-54/T-55 was captured by Iran during 1980 to 1988 Gulf War and some sources have estimated that up to 190 T-54/T-55 series MBTs may be in service with the Iranian Army. The only information on the Safir-74 MBT is that it has major improvements to the output of the engine, transmission and firepower and that a fire extinguishing system has been fitted. The T-72Z is the name for upgraded Type-59's, while Safir-74 refers to upgraded T-54's.

Armament
Main armament of the Safir-74 is a 105 mm HM-49L. A 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun is mounted at the left side of the main armament. A 12.7 mm machine is mounted to the tank commander hatch, which is located at the left side of the turret.
Design and protection
The overall layout of the Type 72Z / Safir-74 main battle tank is identical to the Russian T-54/T-55The basic armour is the same as the Russian made main battle tank T-54/T-55, but the Safir-74 is fitted with a local Iranian ERA Explosive Reactive Armour. The Iranian ERA package is very similar to that currently manufactured for the home and export market by Russia and this also provides protection from both CE (Chelical Energy) and KE (Kinetic Energy) attack. The Iranian armour system comprises one composite layer that provides protection against KE and CE projectiles and an additional energetic material layer (explosive) that has the ability to protect against CE projectiles. The ERA armour is mounted on the sides and the front of the turret, and also to the front and the sides of the hull.
Propulsion
The Safir-74 / Type 72Z is motorized with a new modular power pack with a 780 hp V-46 diesel engine and associated gear box, brakes, hydraulics, steering and cooling system. The torsion bar suspension, either side, consists of five single rubber-tyred road wheels with a distinct gap between the first and second road wheels. The drive sprocket is at the rear and the idler at the front. There are no track-return rollers. The first and fifth road wheel stations are provided with a hydraulic shock-absorber.
