The CV90 Mk IV is a fifth-generation combat-proven Infantry Fighting Vehicle based on the CV90 family of Swedish-made tracked armored combat vehicles designed by Sweden's Defense Materiel Administration (Försvarets Materielverk, FMV), Hägglunds which is now part of BAE Systems and Bofors during the mid-1980s and early 1990s and entered service in Sweden in the mid-90s. The Mk IV represents the next step in the evolution of the CV90 concept. Building on a proud legacy of best-in-class mobility and survivability spanning more than two decades, the CV90 Mk IV brings unrivaled technological capabilities and flexibility to today’s complex battlefield. The CV90 Mk IV was born out of a research and development program performed by BAE Systems to incorporate feedback from the seven nations that currently use the CV90 platform. The CV90 Mk IV has many new improvements in terms of mobility, protection, and firepower. The CV 90 MK IV was unveiled by BAE Systems during the International Armored Vehicles Conference and Exhibition in September 2017. Since 2016, BAE Systems has focused on strengthening our relationships with local Czech industry partners in support of the Czech government’s plans to replace its fleet of legacy BMP-2 vehicles. BAE Systems is offering the CV90 Mark IV for the Next-Generation Combat Vehicle (NGCV) program of the US Army to replace the Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle which is the standard tracked armored IFV in service with the US Army since 1981. In May 2022, BAE Systems Hägglunds announced that the CV90 Mk IV was recommended by the Slovak Ministry of Defense as its preferred candidate for the procurement of IFVs (Infantry Fighting Vehicles) for the Slovak Army. In December 2022, as part of a government-to-government agreement between Sweden and the Slovak Republic, the Ministry of Defence of the Slovak Republic signed a €1.3 billion agreement for the delivery of 152 CV9035 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) from BAE Systems. On May 24, 2023, the Czech Republic confirmed the procurement of 246 CV90 Mk IV infantry fighting vehicles

Technical Data

The CV90 Mk IV can be fitted with a two-man turret or an unmanned weapon station. The two-man power-operated turret is of all-welded steel construction, with the commander seated on the left and the gunner on the right, with both crew members having a single-piece hatch cover that opens to the rear. Turret traverse and weapon elevation are all-electric with manual controls provided for emergency use. The vehicle is fitted with the D series modular turret which can be armed with different types of armament, from 30/40-mm and 35/50-mm automatic cannons up to 120-mm smooth-bore tank cannon. The second armament can include Spike LR or other anti-tank guided missile launchers and a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun. For the CV 90 Mk IV the coaxial machine gun is mounted to an independent pod located on the left side of the turret. This weapon pod can be armed 40mm automatic grenade launcher, 7.62mm machine gun or laser weapon. The right side of the turret is fitted with two anti-tank missile launchers stored under armor in road position and elevated from inside of the turret to perform fire operations. This storage box can be replaced to host UAV or other observation or reconnaissance devices. Eight smoke grenade dischargers are mounted under armor on each side at the front of the turret.

Design and protection
The design of the CV90 Mk IV is very similar to the original CV 90 with the driver seated front left, the power pack to his right, the turret in the center, and the troop's compartment at the rear of the hull. The CV90 Mk IV is of all-welded steel armor construction. The CV90 basic armor provides all-around protection against 14.5 mm armor-piercing rounds. Armor protection over the frontal arc is classified, but all models from CV90 and later are said to be protected against 30 mm APFSDS (Armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot) ammunition. The CV90 Mk IV has a crew of three with a manned turret including the driver, commander and gunner. The rear part of the hull can accommodate up to eight infantrymen seated four on each side facing each other with each man having an anti-blast mine seat. The infantry enters and leaves via a large hydraulic ramp in the rear of the hull. To increase protection the CV90 Mk IV can be equipped with APS (Active Protection System). In June 2018, during the Eurosatory defense exhibition in Paris, the CV90 was fitted with the Israeli-made Iron Fist APS designed by Israel Military Industries (IMI) mounted on the roof of the turret consisting of two launchers of explosive projectile interceptors. The sensor suite of the APS provides a long-range real-time 360º panoramic view of the vehicle’s vicinity and provides the vehicle with the capability to react and counterattack at no time. It provides 360° coverage protection in high elevation angles. The threats are detected thanks to the use of an active electronically scanned array radar sensor developed by RADA Electronic Industries and an optional passive infrared detector developed by Elbit's Elisra. When a threat is imminent, an explosive projectile interceptor is launched towards it. The interceptor explodes very near the threat, destroying or deflecting and destabilizing it without detonating its warhead. The interceptor is a mortar-shell-like projectile with a combustible blast warhead that creates a shockwave upon detonation sufficient to defeat the incoming threat. Modern protection systems of the vehicle also include a jammer system to counter infrared missiles and laser detector devices.
The CV90 Mk IV is motorized with a new engine, the Mk IV boasts up to 1,000 horsepower and the latest upgraded X300 heavy-duty transmission. The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is increased from 35 tons to 37 tons, offering users two tones of extra payload without a decrease in vehicle agility. The torsion bar suspension of the CV90 MK IV consists on each side of seven dual rubber-tired road wheels, a drive sprocket at the front, and an idler at the rear with no track-return rollers. A track tension adjusting system is fitted as standard on the vehicle allowing the driver to adjust both tracks at once without leaving his seat. The CV90 Mk IV can also be equipped with a Soucy type rubber band tracks. Lighter and quieter Soucy rubber band tracks provide greater range, reduce vibrations and increase protection against fire and mine blasts.
Standard equipment of CV90 MK IV includes a nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) filtration system accompanied by a chemical detector and radiation detector systems. It also uses heat-absorbing filters to provide temporary protection against thermal imaging (TIS), image intensifiers, and infrared cameras (IR). The commander is equipped with an independent sighting system mounted on the roof of the turret which is a day camera, a thermal camera, and a laser range finder enabling the commander to find targets and confirm the treats to the gunner who can engage the target with the cannon or anti-tank missiles. The vehicle is also fitted with cameras providing situational awareness for the crew and infantrymen. Modernization of CV90 MkIV also allows to fully realize the concept of BAE Systems iFighting. This BAE Systems supports the crew of the vehicle due to greatly improved situational awareness, helping the decision-making process. This keeps the vigilance and endurance of the crew while ensuring the maximum efficiency of the entire system. iFighting provides improved ergonomics, improved autonomy, extended reality, and remote control capability. The turret also has digital fire controls and its sensor can be integrated into the BAE Systems iFighting network. Everything was designed according to the most modern NGVA Standard Electronic Architecture practices and NATO standards. NGVA is a NATO Standardization Agreement (STANAG 4754) based on open standards to design and integrate multiple electronic sub-systems onto military vehicles that are controllable from a multifunction crew display and control unit. This architecture allows for the more effective use of signals coming from the sensors. The information is processed in real-time by so-called AI (Artificial Intelligence) algorithms and fed to the crew with the support of AR (Augmented Reality) technology.
