Discover new German-made IABG GSD LuWa light tracked armored vehicle

The Germany Company IABG has developed the GSD LuWa Light Air-transportable Armored Fighting Vehicle, a new generation of light tracked armored vehicle specially designed for airborne troops. The goal of this project is to provide a new combat vehicle that could replace the Wiesel tracked airborne armored vehicles in service with the German army.

IABG (Industrieanlagen-Betriebsgesellschaft mbH) is a German engineering and technology company that specializes in providing services to various industries, including defense, automotive, aerospace, telecommunications, and information technology. Founded in 1961, the company's headquarters are located in Ottobrunn, near Munich.

Initially established as a central analysis and testing organization for the German aerospace industry, IABG has since expanded its portfolio to encompass a wide range of services, such as testing, analysis, consulting, and system integration.

IABG provides comprehensive support to military and security organizations, offering services such as system integration, testing, evaluation, and consulting. The company works with various military platforms, including land, air, and naval systems.

In October 2021, the GSD LuWa was presented to the German Federal Ministry of Defence (BMVg) and the Federal Office of Germany army Equipment. The project is led by the company IABG in collaboration with German companies ACS and FFG as well as Valhalla Turrets from Slovenia.

The layout of the GSH LuWa is very unique and the whole vehicle has been designed to be small in size with lightweight allowing the vehicle to be easily airdropped. The hull of the vehicle is equipped with two large bullet-proof windows at the front and one additional small window on each side, offering a 180° view for the crew

The GSD LuWa is based on independent twin-track suspension, each including three road wheels and one return roller. The roof of the vehicle is fitted with an unmanned weapon station armed with one 30 mm cannon developed by the Slovenian company Valhalla Turrets. The front of the hull is equipped with two large bullet-proof windows offering 180° view for the operators, as well as one small window on each side of the hull.

The demonstrator of the GSD LuWa is fitted with an unmanned remotely operated weapon station which is armed with is armed with one 30mm automatic cannon able to engage targets at a maximum firing range of 3,000 m. The 30mm cannon is able to fire a wide range of ammunition types as well as the APFSDS-T (Armor-Piercing Fin-Stabilized Discarding Sabot) round that provides ample armor penetration against current and future battlefield threats.

The GSD LuWa is motorized with a diesel-electric hybrid power pack offering silent running mode.
