The
Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV) (formerly
known as the Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle)
is a developmental U.S. Marine Corps amphibious
vehicle, intended for deployment in 2012. The
EFV is an amphibious armored personnel carrier;
launched at sea, from an amphibious assault ship
beyond the horizon, able to transport a full Marine
rifle squad to shore. It will maneuver cross country
with an agility and mobility equal to or greater
than the M1 Abrams. General Dynamics has achieved
a true break through in combat vehicle design
by providing high water speed, outstanding cross
country mobility, fire power and protection in
an amphibious vehicle. The Expeditionary Fighting
Vehicle (EFV) possesses the ability to launch
forces from 20-25 nautical miles out to sea and
transport them to shore at speeds in excess of
20 knots (three times the current platform’s
speed). EFV provides the elements of flexibility
and tactical surprise critical to establish battlefield
dominance. Its inherent land mobility will generate
uninterrupted momentum to attack the enemy’s
critical vulnerabilities. The EFV will replace
the current amphibious assault vehicle which entered
service in 1972. The current requirement is for
573 vehicles comprising personnel variants (EFVP1)
and command variants (EFVC1). In August 2010,
the latest prototype of the troubled Expeditionary
Fighting Vehicle demonstrates its high speed water
manoeuvrability off the coast of Camp Pendleton.

Variants
:
EFVP1: Armoured personnel carrier
variant, EFVP 1 is operated by a crew of three,
vehicle commander, gunner and driver. The personnel
variant carries 17 fully equipped marines.
EFVC1: Command post variant.
The EFVC1 is a command and control platform at
battalion and regimental levels and carries the
three vehicle crew plus the battalion and regimental
staff.

| Armament |
The
standard version of the EFV is equipped
with a two man turret armed with a Mk44
Bushmaster II 30 mm cannon, which fires
up to 250 rounds per minute with single,
burst, and fully automatic capabilities
up to 2,000 metres (2,200 yd) in all weather
conditions. A general purpose M240 7.62
mm machine gun with 600 rounds of ready-to-use
ammunition is mounted coaxially with the
main gun. The electronically powered two-man
MK46 turret on the personnel variant accommodates
the commander on the right and gunner
on the left, a fire control system, and
the main and coaxial weapons. A line of
four smoke-grenades discharger is mounted
to each side of the turret. The turret
is equipped with a compact modular sight
developed by General Dynamics which includes
a thermal imaging sight, laser rangefinder
and Kearfott dual-axis head assembly (DAHA).
The DAHA is gyroscopically stabilised
to 50mrad in azimuth and in elevation
and provides the stabilised line of sight
for the weapon fire control system on
vehicle.

| Protection |
| The
EFV, designed by General Dynamics Land Systems,
is an amphibious armored tracked vehicle
with an aluminum hull. The hull provides
protection against armour-piercing rounds
and fragmentation devices.
|
| Propulsion |
The EFV vehicle is powered with an 12 Cylinder
Engine MTU MT883 Ka523 Diesel with a power
Water Mode of 2800 hp and a Land Power Mode
of 850 hp, coupled to an transmission Allison
X4560. The EFV is equipped with an retractable
hydropneumatic suspension with seven double
rubber-tyred road wheels with the drive
sprocket at the front and the idlerat the
rear, and four return rollers.

| Accessories
|
| EFV’s
ability to plane at speeds in excess of
20 knots is accomplished by using twin 23”
waterjet propulsors. These proven waterjets
deliver mission critical power, even in
the most demanding sea and surf conditions.
The waterjets provide thrust that allows
the EFV to acheive excellent stability and
superior maneuverability. The rear of the
EFV vehicle family is equipped with an hydraulically
operated ramp.
