Le Canada va envoyé en Afghanistan une version mise à niveau du char de combat principal Leopard 2A4 dans le courant de cette année, information d’un officiel militaire canadien, le Lieutenant Colonel Alan Boster, Directeur du projet « Demandes Terrestres 3 », Système de véhicules blindés de combat, lors de la conférence IQPC à Londres « International Armoured Vehicles conference » qui s’est déroulé en février de cette année. Le Canada a loué 20 Leopard 2A6 à l’armée allemande, dont 19 sont déployés en Afghanistan et un reste disponible chez le constructeur allemand Krauss-Maffei Wegmann en Allemagne, comme modèle de référence. Les perfectionnements ajoutés sur le Leopard 2A6 Canadien incluent un blindage cage d’acier augmentant la protection contres les tirs de roquette antichars du type RPG-7, veste de refroidissement pour l’équipage, et des systèmes de communications canadiens. Les chars sont également équipés d’un kit de protection contre les mines (MPK) et d’un système de protection électronique de contre-mesure pour les engins explosifs improvisés.
