General information

The 2S25 is a self-propelled anti-tank armoured vehicle developed and manufactured by the Russian Defense Company Volgograd Tractor Plant Joint Stock Company to meet the requirements of the Russian airborne troops. In mid-2001, Volgograd Tractor Plant started the development of the 2S25, this one lasted several years. The 2S25 is also known under the denomination of Sprut-SD. The 2S25 Sprut-SD is designed to defeat tanks, hard-skinned materiel and enemy manpower by airborne and amphibious landing forces, as well as by special-designate units of ground forces. The 2S25 is an armoured tracked amphibious vehicle as powerful as T-72 and T-80 tanks and as manoeuvrable and swim-capable as airborne infantry combat vehicles. The 2S25 Sprut-SD can be used by units of ground forces and naval infantry as a light amphibious tank. The 2S25 Sprut-SD is based on the BMD-3 chassis. According to Russian information, the Russian Army placed an initial contract for a total of 15 2S25 SPATG in three batches of five vehicles each in 2005. This was followed by a second batch of 45 units with the total requirement being for up to 85-110 units.

Armament

The 2S25 Sprut-SD is equipped with a two man turret armed with 125mm antitank gun and fitted with the equipment to control guided projectiles and the day/night sight with sighting and a ranging channel. The gun is fitted with an automatic ammunition loader, which ensures high rate of fire of 6 to 8 rounds per minute with both conventional projectiles and rounds with guided missiles. A coaxial machine of 7.62 mm calibre is mounted to the left side of the main armament. Two banks of three smoke-grenades discharger are mounted to the rear side of the turret.

Protection

The hull and turret of the 2S25 self-propelled anti-tank gun is of all-welded aluminium armour with a composite skin. Constructed with the crew compartment at the front, turret and fighting compartment in the centre and power pack at the rear. Through the frontal arc of 40° left and right the armour provides protection against attack from fire up to 75 mm and through the remainder of the vehicle against attack from 30 mm.

Propulsion
The suspension of the 2S25 Sprut-SD either side consists of seven single road wheels with idler at the front, drive sprocket at the rear and six track return rollers. The 2S25 Sprut-SD is motorised with a VV06-2S Diesel engine with a power of 510 Hp. The 2S25 Sprut-SD has a maximum road speed of 70 km/h, and a maximum road range of 500 km.
Accessories

The 2S25 Sprut-SD antitank gun can be shipped by all types of transport, para-dropped with the crew inside the vehicle and cross water obstacles in sea state of up to-3 without preparation while firing the gun within a sector of ±35. To ensure concealment, the ground clearance can be changed within 400mm during 6-7s. Each member of crew has available the built-in the roof observant instruments with the day and night channels. The combined sight of the commander is stabilized in two planes and is combined with the laser sight for guiding 125-mm projectiles along the laser beam. The sight of spotter is stabilized in the vertical plane and includes the laser range-finder, which provides ballistic calculator with the constantly changing data about the purpose. The 2S25 Sprut-SD is fully amphibious and is moved in the water with the aid of two water jets, which make possible for it to develop speed 8-10 km/h.
