Iranian commandos now equipped with new AM-50 Sayyad sniper rifles
Iran’s Army Ground Force equipped its commandos serving in the rapid reaction units with the most accurate domestically-made sniper rifle, dubbed Sayyad (hunter), announced the local daily Tasnim. A commencement ceremony was held on Wednesday morning for a number of commandos and snipers in the Army Ground Force rapid reaction forces, who have passed a two-month intensive course.

The new graduates have been trained with the Iranian-made Sayyad sniper rifle and are going to use the weapon in their future operations.

The Iranian Army had already provided Navy commandos with the domestically-made rifle.

Iran has manufactured two versions of Sayyad under the trademark AM-50. The AM50 was developed after Iran purchased Steyr HS .50 rifles, exported from Austria.

The gun’s feed system excludes a magazine and fires single shots with 12.7-mm bullets.

Weighing around 12 kilograms, Sayyad is 1.5 meters long and can hit targets in a maximum range of 1,500 meters. The gun’s fire rate is 3-5 rounds per minute.

Moreover, different optical devices, including night vision sights and thermal scopes, can be installed on the sniper rifle.

Iranian military experts and technicians have in recent years made great headways in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient in the arms sphere.

Iran has already made it clear that its military might poses no threat to the regional countries, saying that the Islamic Republic’s defense doctrine is entirely based on deterrence.
