BAE’s bid for the FRES Specialist Vehicle competition will be based on the CV90 chassis, seen here in Norwegian service, fitted with a turret-mounted 40mm automatic cannon. BAE Systems will submit its bid for the British Army’s most important programme on Thursday 5 November. The bid is for “Recce Block 1”, the £2bn first phase of the FRES SV (Future Rapid Effect System – Specialist Vehicles) programme. The Scout variant will give British troops a much-needed replacement for the ageing CVR(T) Scimitar, with greatly improved protection, firepower and reconnaissance abilities. The UK Ministry of Defence has said it will select a winner in the first quarter of 2010. The BAE Systems contender for all the variants is based on the latest version of its proven CV90 chassis, sold to six countries and recognised as the best combat vehicle in its class. For the vital Scout role, the chassis has been shortened and given a lower profile. The Scout turret and UK mission fit of all variants will be integrated onto the chassis in the UK, preserving jobs and the key skills necessary to continue to support British Army operations. BAE Systems has delivered well over 100 urgent operational requirements to modify vehicles in Iraq and Afghanistan, mostly to provide protection to crews against ever-changing threats. The CV90 chassis has a mature supply chain, much of it already in the UK, and BAE Systems plans to increase UK content. The vehicle, turret technology and weapon system all have significant export potential. BAE Systems has already spent more than £25m – not including the weapon system - on developing an all-new British-designed turret for the Scout variant. It features sophisticated sensor systems and a revolutionary 40mm cannon. The latter’s ease of use, ability to fire on the move, versatility and much-increased punch means that it will give a major improvement over the 30mm Rarden gun used in Scimitar. Its 40mm high explosive round has more than three times the explosive power of the 30mm Rarden, while its armour-piercing projectile will penetrate more than 140mm of steel armour. The BAE Systems FRES demonstrator vehicle has already begun mobility trials at Millbrook proving ground and fired its weapon system at the Shoeburyness range.BAE’s bid for the FRES Specialist Vehicle competition will be based on the CV90 chassis, seen here in Norwegian service, fitted with a turret-mounted 40mm automatic cannon.

General information
IVECO LMV (Light Multirole Vehicle) is a 4WD tactical vehicle developed by IVECO, and in service with several countries. Following the experience acquired in the various missions carried out in the 90's in various operational and geographical scenarios, IVECO Defence Vehicle Division identified the need for a new tactical vehicle. The development of the Light Multirole Vehicle (LMV) illustrates IVECO DVD (Defence Vehicles Division)'s outstanding ability to undertake rapid vehicle development programmes and to meet a range of threat levels. This completely new type of 4x4 on/off road tactical vehicle combines the roles of peacekeeping with peacemaking and follows the unique principles of “Dual Role” technology developed by IVECO. Under this concept vehicles are capable of operating with either varying levels of protection or in an unprotected state depending on the assessed threat. Protection is added without changing the external appearance of the vehicle, or affecting its automotive performance. From the outset, LMV was designed to incorporate high tactical mobility with high maximum road speed and optimal off-road and cross-country performance. It has high protection levels against anti tank and anti personnel mines with an emphasis on crew protection rather than vehicle integrity. The inherent stealthy design ensures low probability of detection from optical, thermal imaging or radar sensors. Already selected for front line duties by British, Italian and Belgian forces and with a confirmed order book already in excess of 3,000 vehicles, LMV is without question the light tactical vehicle of choice for the 21st century. The LMV is used in Afghanistan by the Italian and Spanish troops.

Technical data
Armament
The Iveco LMV can be fitted with a remote controlled weapon station armed with weapons up to 12,7 mm in caliber. Larger weapons systems such as air-defense missiles, shelter, box-type or even pick-up style bodies can be mounted behind a smaller two-seat cab.
Protection
The LMV Iveco can be fitted with modular armour, who gives a protection against any type of mine and ballistic threats, favoring crew protection versus vehicle integrity. The LMV is designed to provide the crew with the maximum possible safety against mines. The ground clearance has been maximized, moving away the origin of the explosion. No heavy mechanical element has been installed under the crew cabin and the transfer case has been moved into the rear part of the vehicle. The high payload of the LMV can be exploited for installed add-on armour kits designed since the first design phase. The basic kits provides ballistic protection against light weapons fire, while the heavier kit can protect the crew from ambushes, including mines threat.
Propulsion
The LMV utilizes a conventional C-section chassis but with longitudinal reinforcements and tubular cross-members to give the required torsional rigidity. At present two wheelbase lengths are available, the standard 3.2 m and the extended 3.5 m, these giving overall lengths of 4.704 and 5.504 m respectively. The LMV Iveco is motorized with a 140 KW(HP) power engine coupled to an automatic or a mechanical gearbox with with 6 forward gears and 1 reverse.
Accessories
The cab is fitted with two front adjustable and suspended seats, plus three suspended seats at the rear. A winch is mounted to the front of the vehicle.
