Originally developed for the renowned bullpup assault rifle Steyr AUG, the GL40 grenade launcher, chambered in 40mm x 46 Low Velocity (LV), is already in use internationally and can also be employed as a standalone weapon. "For the first time in its recent history, STEYR ARMS has successfully participated in a tender by the German Bundeswehr," the company stated.

The GL-40 is a grenade launcher designed with a mounting interface compatible with the STANAG 4694 rail, offering great versatility for accessory installation. This grenade launcher is equipped with a STANAG 4694 rail positioned from 9 o'clock to 12 o'clock, allowing easy attachment of additional equipment.

It uses 40 x 46 caliber ammunition, suitable for various operational applications. Its cold-forged steel barrel ensures high durability and resistance while being protected against abrasion and corrosion thanks to its surface treated with MANNOX coating.

With a barrel length of 180 mm, the GL-40 features compact dimensions with a total length of 264 mm, a width of 100 mm, and a height of 95 mm, facilitating handling in the field. Despite its robustness, it remains relatively lightweight, weighing only 1170 g.

Its operation is through breech loading with an articulated action mechanism, providing smooth and efficient handling even in demanding conditions. The trigger system is double action only, with a trigger weight of approximately 5 kg, ensuring increased safety and control during use.

In terms of safety, the GL-40 is equipped with a 2-position ambidextrous manual safety lever that locks the hammer, as well as internal drop safety and an additional safety that blocks the trigger when not mounted, ensuring safe use in all circumstances. The surfaces of all steel parts are treated with STEYR's exclusive MANNOX process, protecting against corrosion and abrasion.

The modular design allows for easy maintenance and interchangeability of all components. The GL40 can be reconfigured into a standalone launcher without the need for special tools. The AR15-compatible rear stock developed by STEYR ARMS is designed to withstand heavy use and can be quickly adjusted in length. The hand grip by STEYR ARMS, also compatible with AR15, offers a secure grip and can be customized to fit the shooter's hands with interchangeable back and side inserts.

Steyr has thus signed a historic agreement with the German Bundeswehr; now it remains to be seen when the order will be delivered and what the exact details are.
