In August 2019, GM Defense has announced that the U.S. Army has awarded GM Defense LLC a $1 million contract to develop its new Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV) for prototype testing and evaluation. GM Defense LLC has selected Ricardo Defense Inc. to support key product logistics and fielding requirements associated with its pursuit of the U.S. Army’s Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV) Program. The first vehicle was delivered to the U.S. army in October 2020.
The Infantry Squad Vehicle is a new, lightweight, all-terrain troop carrier designed to modernize Army Infantry Brigade Combat Teams. The ISV is based on the award-winning 2020 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 midsize truck architecture and leverages 90 percent proven commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) parts, including Chevrolet Performance race components. The 5,000-pound ISV was uniquely engineered to fulfill military requirements and designed to provide rapid ground mobility. The expeditionary ISV is light enough to be sling loaded from a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter and compact enough to fit inside a CH-47 Chinook helicopter for air transportability.
The ISV program provides Army Infantry Brigade Combat Teams an additive lightweight vehicle to move Soldiers and their equipment quickly over complex and difficult cross-country terrain. ISV is the Program of Record (PoR) intended to provide Ground Mobility Vehicle capabilities for the Army.
U.S. Army Infantry Soldiers have recently gone to the front lines of training using what the Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV) Program Manager refers to as the “better boot.” During the field trial tests, the ISV was also deployed undercarriage by a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter. The ISV is a new concept to allow Army Infantry Brigade Combat Team Soldiers to cover large areas of challenging terrain more quickly and less fatigued by reducing the area usually covered on foot.
Infantrymen would also be able to carry enough personal and squad provisions to self-sustain for several days, and the ISV is also transported easily by air assets during air assault and airborne assault missions.
The ISV is powered by GM Duramax 2.8L turbo diesel I4 (LWN) developing 200 hp at 3,400 rpm. It has a curb weight of 2,267 kg with a maximum payload of 1,450 kg. The vehicle is able to carry up to nine soldiers.
