Some special operations medics in Afghanistan now have a new device that helps save soldiers with the most common cause of preventable death in combat: a traumatic pelvic wound. Unlike a hemorrhage in the arm or leg where a tourniquet can be used to shut off bleeding, there was no way until recently to do the same for wounds in the lower torso, which can kill a person in a matter of minutes

Two of the three vehicles in the Army's "Ultra Light Vehicle" program have now entered survivability testing in Nevada and Maryland, to evaluate both their blast and ballistic protection capability. A prototype military vehicle undergoing testing at the U.S. Army TACOM complex in Warren could soon lead to a lighter, more fuel-efficient armored truck for U.S. troops sent to the battlefield. The Ultra Light Vehicle, or ULV, weighs 6,350 kg (14,000 pounds), about one-third of the weight of similar military vehicles, yet will be capable of a top speed of 112 km/h (70 mph).

HEaDS-UP Helmet Electronics and Display System for mounted and dismounted soldiers
 

In their quest for better helmet technologies to keep Soldiers and Marines safe on the battlefield, researchers at Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center here are making a "HEaDS-UP" play. Helmet Electronics and Display System-Upgradeable Protection, or HEaDS-UP, has been a four-year effort at Natick to provide mounted and dismounted troops with a more fully integrated headgear system.

XM25 Counter Defilade Target Engagement weapon system ready for low-rate initial production
 

Lt. Col. Shawn Lucas, the PEO Soldier program manager for individual weapons at Picatinny Arsenal, N.J., said the XM25 is currently in the "engineering and manufacturing development phase," not yet ready for fielding. The XM25 Counter Defilade Target Engagement weapon system is now in development. But by this time next year, the system may have moved into low-rate initial production and if so, will lose the experimental "X" prefix.
