Ballistic, or bulletproof, armour is used to protect vehicles against different threats. But it also makes them heavier, especially when seeking to protect against more powerful weapons. Taken together, armour and the vehicle structure constitute more than half of the vehicle’s weight, requiring more fuel and potentially making it harder to manoeuvre. In search of lighter armour, the European Defence Agency (EDA) launched a project on 20 October 2022 to use new advances in metallic materials for ballistic steels.

According to information published by the Russian defense industry on October 25, 2022, the Iskander-M (NATO reporting name: SS-26 Stone) tactical missile system can be equipped with new missiles, which will enhance its combat capabilities, said Valery Kashin, the Deputy CEO of the High-Precision Systems Company and General Designer of the Machine-Building Design Bureau Hero of Labor.

Developing world-class advanced technology for soldiers on the battlefield is a key part of the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command’s mission. Many of the technologies stem from partnerships between DEVCOM and its global network of academic, industry and governments, including a project with the DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory, located in Maryland; the DEVCOM-Atlantic International Technology Center Northern Europe, located in Germany; and the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramics Technologies and Systems, also in Germany. Argie Sarantinos, DEVCOM Headquarters, reports.

The automated Modular Integrated Protection System (MIPS) classifies incoming enemy missiles, intercepts and destroys them. To do this, the ‘brain’ identifies what the incoming threat is and decides how best to defeat the object at precisely the right moment all in superfast time. The British Army explains its forthcoming system.

Today’s emerging threats on the modern battlefield are small and inexpensive unmanned aerial and ground systems also called drones which can easily be purchased on the Internet. To counter these drones, American Company Northrop Grumman has developed a counter-UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) solution by combining three technologies including the M-ACE system, Bushmaster chain guns, and specific ammunition.

According to information published by the U.S. DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) on September 16, 2022, Teams involved in DARPA’s Robotic Autonomy in Complex Environments with Resiliency (RACER) program have one experiment under their belts and will focus on even more difficult off-road landscapes at Camp Roberts, California, September 15-27. The program aims to give driverless combat vehicles off-road autonomy while traveling at speeds that keep pace with those driven by people in realistic situations.

When you think of a rocket launch, you probably imagine a glistening white cylinder emerging from a cloud of smoke and fire, then making its way into outer space. But while the sight of a launch may only last a few minutes, not many see the dedication, long hours and incredible team effort that made it all possible. “It’s not the hardware or the software–it’s the people on the launch vehicle team and their expertise that are the keys to our continued success,” said Mark Ogren, director of strategy and technology, launch vehicles, Northrop Grumman.
