Ukraine deploys Swedish Archer 155mm self-propelled howitzer against Russian troops
As reported by Praise the Steph on November 3, 2023, the Ukrainian 45th Separate Artillery Brigade shared images of the first deployment of the Swedish Archer 155mm 6x6 self-propelled howitzer, equipped with Barracuda camouflage, by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in combat operations. This artillery unit is also known to operate American M777 and French TRF1 155mm towed howitzers.

This recent development aligns with earlier reports by the Army Recognition editorial team, which indicated that Ukraine was in discussions with Türkiye about acquiring Firtina 155mm self-propelled howitzers, and the arrival of new systems, including the Archer, was anticipated. The Archer self-propelled howitzers, along with trained gunner crews, reportedly arrived in Ukraine during the summer of 2023.
As reported on March 17, 2023, the Swedish government donated eight Archer 155mm wheeled self-propelled howitzers and ten Stridsvagn 122 Main Battle Tanks to Ukraine.
The Archer is a 155mm wheeled self-propelled howitzer developed by BAE Systems AB, a Swedish subsidiary of BAE Systems PLC. It is based on a Volvo A30D 6x6 articulated all-terrain truck chassis and is designed to deliver rapid and precise artillery support for modern military forces.
The primary armament of the Archer is a 155mm/L52 caliber gun capable of firing various ammunition types, including high explosive (HE), smoke, illumination, and precision-guided projectiles. The system has a maximum firing range of up to 60 km (37 miles) with rocket-assisted projectiles and can achieve a firing rate of 8-9 rounds per minute for up to 3 minutes in multiple-round simultaneous impact (MRSI) mode.
The Archer howitzer boasts an advanced fire control system, GPS and inertial navigation systems, and an automated ammunition handling system, ensuring high accuracy and swift target acquisition. The crew of 3-4 individuals can operate the system from inside a climate-controlled cabin or remotely, providing increased survivability and flexibility in various combat scenarios.
One of the key advantages of the Archer system is its exceptional mobility and rapid response capability. It can be deployed for firing within 30 seconds and can relocate to a new firing position within 20 seconds, making it a challenging target for the enemy.
