Russian army deploys in Ukraine its new TOR-M2DT air defense missile system



According to a video published by the Russian Ministry of Defense on December 13, 2022, the Russian army has deployed for the first time in Ukraine, the TOR-M2DT air defense missile system based on the DT-30PM tracked all-terrain vehicle. The new air defense system was specially designed to be used in the Arctic region.

The Russian armed forces continue to deploy a new generation of combat vehicles developed and designed by the Russian defense industry. The conflict in Ukraine is an excellent way to test new generations of military equipment in the context of a real combat situation.

A few days ago, the Army Recognition team reported that the Russian army deployed its new ISDM Zemledeliye Mine mine-laying system. Citing information published by the "ZOKA @200_zoka" Twitter account, the Russian army has conducted the launching of mines with the ISDM Zemledeliye mine laying system near the city of Zaporizhia, on the Dnieper River in southeastern Ukraine.

Thanks to the use of the TOR-M2DT, the Russian forces deployed in Ukraine have now new mobile air defense missile systems which have the capability to move in snowy or muddy terrain.

The TOR-M2DT is a new short-range air defense missile system developed by Russia`s JSC Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant Kupol (a subsidiary of the Almaz-Antey Concern) and was unveiled for the first time to the public during the rehearsal for the Russian Victory Day Parade, in April 2017.

The TOR-M2DT is based on the DT-30PM tracked all-terrain vehicle which consists of two tracked vehicle units linked by a steering mechanism. The first vehicle is used to host the crew and to conduct all the firing operations.

The second vehicle of the TOR-M2DT integrates two 9M334 modules, each containing four 9M331 and 9M332 surface-to-air guided missiles in four transporting-launching containers which are used to store, transport, and launch the missiles. The turret of the TOR-M2 also includes a 25 km 360° search radar mounted at the rear and 15 km 60° tracking radar at the front.

The TOR-M2DT can engage a target at a range from 1,000 to 12,000 m and to an altitude from 10 to 10,000 m. The 9M331 is a short-range surface-to-air missile designed to engage manned aircraft, UAVs, and missiles flying at a maximum speed in excess of Mach 2. The 9M332 is a modified 9M331 used with the 9K332 Tor-M2 tracked air defense missile system.

The TOR-M2DT uses the same chassis and powerpack as the standard DT-30PM all-terrain vehicle. The vehicle is motorized with a V-shaped, 12-cylinder multi-fuel diesel engine YaMZ-847.10 developing 800 hp. The DT-30PM can run at a maximum road speed of 45 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 700 km. The DT-30PM can negotiate gradients up to 30° and a slope of 15°. It can cross a trench of 4.5 m in width and a vertical obstacle of 1.2 m.
