Last week four US and two Fijian peacekeepers of th Multinational Force and Observers mission were wounded in two IED blasts against their convoy.

The 720 US soldiers currently deployed in northern Sinai are lightly equipped. There were fears that they could become a target of the jihadists being active in the area. For that reason the US administration was considering the options of whether to better equip or completely withdraw them.

According to US officials’ statement on Wednesday the administration has finally decided to send at least 75 additional troops, along with surveillance and defensive equipment that would bolster their capability to defend themselves.
