Turkey ready to study the Russian offer to produce S-300VM as new air defense system for its army.
Turkey is ready to study Russia’s proposal on the production of S-300VM anti-ballistic missile defense systems, Russia’s NTV channel reported with reference to diplomatic sources. This information came almost a year after Ankara cancelled a preliminary deal with China to purchase Chinese-made FD-2000 amid concerns from its NATO partners.

According to the TV channel, Turkey wants its defense contractors to produce systems by themselves but it needs to receive a big set of technologies from countries that are developing weapons of this type.

"According to data of diplomatic sources, Turkey will study the relevant proposal made by Russia," the TV channel reported.

Earlier, Turkey announced a tender for the joint production of anti-ballistic missile defense systems. Russia offered Turkey the Antey-2500 (NATO reporting name: SA-23 Gladiator/Giant) air defense missile system but the system was not shortlisted yielding to Chinese, US and European complexes.

In September 2013, had selected the proposal submitted by China Precision Machinery Export-Import Corp. (CPMEIC) to jointly develop its HQ-9 system (FD-2000 export version of HQ-9), but the deal was cancelled after a complaint by the U.S.

Because of these concerns, Turkey agreed to reconsider its initial decision and has since reopened talks with the second and third bidders—Eurosam, which makes Aster 30, and Raytheon/Lockheed Martin, which submitted a bid for the Patriot system.

The S-300VM "Antey-2500" (NATO reporting name SA-23 Gladiator\Giant) is a Russian-made anti-ballistic missile system designed and manufactured by the Company Almaz-Antey.

The S-300VM has a maximum target detection range of up to 250 km, with aerodynamic target engagement envelope of up to 200 km (range) and altitude from 250 m. to 30 km. It can engage simultaneously up to 24 targets and up to 48 guided missiles.
