Pakistan produces the HJ-8 under license from China, which helped the South Asian country build an independent production line to manufacture the anti-tank missile.

The HJ-8 is manufactured in Pakistan by Kahuta Research Laboratories, which has produced a total of 21,350 missiles between 1990 and 2012.

The HJ-8 alos named Red Arrow is an anti-tank guided missile weapon system which consists of a launch tube mounted on a launching device fitted with optics. Ther missile can be fire from a standard heavy-duty tripod or its can be mounted on light combat vehicles.

The HJ-8 is considered as second-generation of anti-tank guided missile which is able to penetrate armour ERA (Explosive Reactive Armour) types. There are numerous improved versions following the original HJ-8, designated HJ-8A to HJ-8H, each incorporating improved features over the previous model. HJ-8E entered service in mid-1990. The HJ-8E anti-tank missile has a weight of 24.5 kg and it has a maximum range of 4,000 m.

The Baktar Shikan is a variant of the Chinese-made HJ-8 anti-tank weapon system that has been manufactured under license by Pakistan since the late 1990s and had a successful first test in July 1997. Its long range, penetration power and a powerful anti-jamming capability form a potent defence against armored targets.

The missile has a maximum range of 3,000 m. The missile can penetrate armours of 500 mm with standard warhead, while the tandem warheads are claimed to be able of penetrating armours of over 600 mm.
